Height: 5-8 Age:
17
Position: No. 1 Singles/Doubles Year: Sophomore
Performance: Rusu is unbeaten this season for the second-ranked and undefeated Rebels. She helped Freeman beat then-No. 2 Deep Run last week with a singles and thrilling doubles win with Elizabeth Sutphin.
Best trait: “Probably my serve and my forehand is much better than my backhand.”
On transfer to Freeman: “I switched schools because I moved. At the beginning it was really strange for me. It’s really hard to move from school to school when you don’t really know people. I knew my Tucker teammates were going to be mad. On the first day of school, one of the first people I saw was coach [Larry] Parpart and he just said, ‘Welcome!’ “
On differences from last season: “The team is different and the
coaches and different and the strategies are different. The practices
are different. For me it is more serious. Our team is more close to
each other. The girls are really close to each other.”
Funniest teammate: “Probably Erin Moore because she laughs a lot and she’s just a freshman. We’re trying to get her more experience. I just love her. She’s one of my best teammates.”
Where she’s from: “Moldova. It’s close to Romania and Ukraine. I was born there and I moved to Italy when I was 14. I lived in Italy for one year and moved to the U.S. with my stepdad and mom.”
Favorite class: “One of my favorite is English and the other is spanish, because I love languages.”
How many languages do you speak: “Right now I speak five languages.”
Toughest opponent: “It’s really hard to tell. Probably my teammate Elizabeth Sutphin, she is my partner.”
Goals: “I was thinking this monrin about my goals. And the biggest goal for me is just beating [Mills Godwin’s] Katie Blow. I played against her two times last year and I lost in three sets the first time and two the last time. So I’m going to try my best today, if we can play.” The top-ranked Eagles are set to host the second-ranked Rebels at 4:30 Tuesday at Three Chopt Recreation Club, weather permitting.
