Performance: Williams struck out 10 giving up four hits in an 1-0 upset of then-No. 1 Cosby. She followed the next evening with a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts in a 2-0 victory over James River.
On upset of Cosby: “That was amazing. It was a great team effort.”
Best trait: “Pitching and keeping the girls pumped up. I like to make them feel calmer. I like to joke around a little.”
Funniest teammate: “Jessie Gorham by far. She just loves to make me smile.”
If you had one wish: “To play on the U.S. National Team.”
Favorite player: “Cat Osterman.”
Goals rest of season: “Try to win as many games as possible and beat our last year’s record. Hopefully win districts, win the region and win the state. Just progress at each level.”
Toughest opponent: “Cosby’s a big rival, but I have to go with Midlo. That’s just our school rival, Monacan versus Midlo.”
Invite any three people to dinner: “Jim Houp [the first softball coach she ever had. “He taught me almost everything I know about softball. Something terrible happened to him. I just wanted to recognize him.] Cat Osterman and Tom Bunn [her travel coach].”
On toughness of region: “It’s very difficult. There’s a lot of good pitching, like [Cosby’s] Whitney Haller. The girls are strong this year. The level of play has gone up for every school. We’re going to see a lot of one-run games.”
