Girls VBall POW – Oct. 28

Gretchen Wilson, Midlothian Trojans

Year: Senior        Age: 17

Position: OH       Ht: 5-9

Performance: Wilson posted 13 kills, 2 aces, 1 block and 6 digs in an upset of Atlee. Against Clover Hill she had 9 kills, 2 aces, and 5 digs, and added 8 kills, 3 aces, and 13 digs in a victory over Monacan.

On week: “It was our team, we worked really well together and and it seems like that last part of our season we really pulled it together and started upping our game a little bit and started playing to our potential.”

College plans: “I’m planning on playing in college, but I’m not sure exactly where. I’m waiting to see what happens in club season. I  want to major in environmental sciences. I’m basically just seeing what’s offered. I’d be wiling to play D-I, but it just depends on the school and their academics and stuff.”

On coach Mary Allen: “She’s a very good coach. She tends to listen to us and she’s really good with us.”

Toughest opponent: “I think our toughest opponent is probably Cosby. It’s something about them that we never play to our fullest even though we have plenty of chances to beat them.”

Difference in beginning and end of season:
“I think the beginning of the season everyone was expecting us to be good and I think it was pressure and we kind of folded under the pressure. I think now we’ve relaxed and focused more on playing volleyball. I think we’ve come together since then.”

Invite any three people to dinner: “Misty May, I think that would be kind of cool. She’s a great volleyball player. I’d probably like to meet Abraham Lincoln. I think meeting Brad Paisley would be cool.”

Funniest teammate: “It would have to be Taylor Riley. She has got the most personality than anyone that I’ve ever met. She’s crazy. She keeps the whole team pumped up.”

Favorite sports memory: “It’s probably recently, when we played James River last time and took them to five games on our senior night. I think that was the first night that everything started to come together. We played absolutely amazing.”

What makes her standout: “Probably my ability to accept not trying my hardest. I always go for every ball. I don’t accept not succeeding. I just push myself.”

Favorite subject: “Science.” Wilson holds a 3.8 GPA.

Other sports: “No. Volleyball takes up all of my time. If I played any more sports I would probably have to quit school.”

One thing you wouldn’t know: “Well, I really like photography. I’m really quiet but I tend to be really talkative around people that I know.”
