Highland Springs Springers
Age: 16 Year: Junior
Position: CB/RB
Performance: J.J. Saunders had two interceptions (and dropped two others on breakups) at cornerback in a 41-14 win over Lee-Davis. He also had 157 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
On week: “Just going out there and getting it done. On defense, keep my eyes out of the backfield. On offense, we have a great line. They opened the holes up for me. I had great blocks.”
On big plays: “It all starts with the QB [JaQuan Burchette]. Our new QB stepped up. Other big players like Clarence Hill, Melquan Weston. All of us clicked.”
Best attribute (RB): “My vision. Running fast.”
Best attribute (CB): “I really like hitting, but coverage wise, just playing the ball when its in the air. I like bumping receivers, playing man-to-man.”
What’s your favorite, RB or CB: “My heart is at cornerback, but when I as younger I played a lot of running back. That changed going into my 10th grade year. I fell in love with defense.”
Funniest teammate: “Delante Rowe. That’s my brother, everything he says is like I would say the same thing. It’s seems like we have a lot in common.”
Toughest opponent: Teammate Clarence Hill. Big receiver, physical just like me. Hard to get on press coverage.”
On coach Loren Johnson: “I really like coach Johnson. He’s different from coach [Scott] Burton, but in a way they are the same. We have a real cool relationship. Keep it real cool with each other.”
Most complete game?: “I can say that was my most complete game, but I don’t think it’s going to be my best one this season.”
One word to describe him as a football player: “Confident.”
