Mike Goad – Oct. 31

– Mike Goad is a senior tight end/defensive end for the Matoaca Warriors’
varsity football team. He transferred from Thomas Dale this summer. Goad will
also play basketball this season and is a DigitalSports intern. His blog will
appear here consistently.

My senior homecoming was more than I could ask for. We came out of the gates and defeated Hopewell 42-16 for our third straight win, to put us back at .500 and 4-4 on the season.

The offense scored on our first drive with a great run from homecoming king Josh Edwards. Dustin Clark then connected yet again with wide out DeCarlos Smith twice to make it 21-3.

We then surprised them with an onside kick, got the ball back, and were then able to get another score, followed by another to make it 35-3 going into the locker room. Dustin hit me three times in the first half for 60 yards, and none of us really played much in the second half.

The defense was yet again stout. The front four probably played our best game of the season as we were able to get a lot of pressure on the quarterback, which made it hard for them to do really anything. I was able to get into the defensive rotation early in the first half, and was able to make a few plays along with fellow defensive linemen B.J. Morton, Jaimen Newman, Desmond Smith, and Landon Blizzard, who all played great games, and controlled the line of scrimmage the whole 48 minutes.

This Friday night (Oct. 31) we travel down Route 10 to play Meadowbrook. Simply put, this is our playoffs. This is a huge game for us, and a chance for us to upset a team that a lot of people see as better than us, and a chance for me to play against some old little league teammates such as Morgan Moses, Andre Coble, and Derek Tinsley (he was my center when I played little league quarterback).

Over the past few weeks we have really come together as a team, and if we play like we have been I feel like we can come away with a huge win. I am confident that my coaches will properly prepare us, and I am confident in myself, and my teammates to carry out the duties necessary to win this game. Should be fun.
