Height: 5-9 Age: 18 Year: Senior
Performance: Poured in 35 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and five steals and blocked two shots in a win over No. 10 Monacan. A night before, Bentley had 31 points, 17 boards and five more steals to help top Meadowbrook. She added 16 points, 10 boards, four steals and two blocks in limited action against George Wythe.
On her huge performances this past week: “Well, we had some really tough games so I didn’t want to lose them, especially when we had to play Monacan and Meadowbrook. Last year with Meadowbrook we didn’t do so well, then last time when we played Monacan we didn’t do so well. We were all on the same page.”
Funniest teammate: “There’s a couple of them. I probably have to go with Jessica Clanton, my point guard. She’s just goofy. She has one of the best senses of humor on the team.”
Favorite WNBA & NBA player: “It would definitely have to be Candace Parker. For the NBA it’s between Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade. There’s something about Kobe and there’s something about D-Wade.”
Guard or inside: Before transferring from the Tidewater area, Bentley was a guard. Now with her height-challenged team, she plays inside and does it well.
“It was something I had to get used to. Down in Tidewater my coach was grooming me more as a guard. When I came up here I had to switch that whole mentality around. When you love the game as much as I do, you do whatever you can to try to make yourself that much better. I went to the outside courts and played with the guys so I can get stronger. Having brothers, they kind of helped me, and having guys friends, they taught me some things that would help me.”
Favorite subject: “Science.”
If you had one wish: “To own my own business and make sure my mom [Cathy Brown] is set for life.”
Toughest opponent: “Myself. Because if I don’t do something to my best ability I get down on myself. I try to push myself harder and harder and harder, but sometimes I push myself to the limit. I do it to get better.”
On recruiting: “I’ve gotten some letters, talked to a couple of schools. I think if I work hard and continue to play like I’ve been playing, hopefully I can play at any level.”
On season: “It’s wonderful. It feels great. It shows everybody that just because we weren’t counted on to win, we’re just as good as anybody else. All of us, the whole team are always talking about the polls, and what we need to do to get better. We wanted to prove that we can play just as hard as a Cosby, a Monacan or a Bird. I think we’ve proved ourselves.”
Goals: “Just stay focused, don’t stray, make sure that I do everything that I’m supposed to do and everything that I need to do. Continue the chemisty that the team has.”
