Atlee girls soccer coach Bruce Lovelace has been waiting for his girls to put together two good halves.
The time came Wednesday evening, as Atlee, ranked fourth in the DigitalSports Top 10, upended No. 1 Mills Godwin 1-0 to give the Eagles their first loss of the season.
The foot of sophomore forward Kimberly Glymph got the job done.
Off a nice lead from freshman forward Ashley Riefner, Glymph turned on the speed and got her left shoulder by a Godwin defender.
Then it was Glymph and Byron one-on-one, with Glymph winning.
“[It] was a through ball right through the defenders. Luckily I wasn’t offsides,” Glymph said. “Cut off my defender and kicked it in right under the goalie.”
It was a beautiful play that turned the tide with 13 minutes to go in the contest.
At that point Godwin had numerous opportunities that didn’t convert.
The Eagles were unlucky sometimes, but Atlee’s defense and keeper Taylor Hoy (six saves) played a terrific match.
“Atlee’s a very good team. Very well organized,” Godwin coach Ali Toole said. “They’re not one dimensional. They worked their tail off all night.”
One particular Raider who needed ice on both calves after the contest was Jordan Roseboro, the University of Miami-bound senior.
It surprised Toole that Roseboro was playing center midfield instead of up top at forward to take advantage of her blazing speed.
But it worked.
Her clever moves and quickness gave Godwin fits and found people open for strong attacks.
“She’s so good technically,” Toole said of Roseboro. “She’s cutting out one or two players. She can strike a ball. That challenges your keeper.”
Another challenge comes Friday at private-school power Collegiate hosts Godwin at 5 p.m. on Friday.
