Top players honored, 10/25/09

American Family Fitness, Fox Richmond and DigitalSports have teamed up to honor players of the week in a myriad of sports each season.

In each of those seasons, a male and female player of the week will be chosen to receive a three-month membership to American Family Fitness and gifts from Fox Richmond.

Four from last season were honored recently.

For the spring season, Collegiate’s Becky Patton and Atlee’s Mike McCabe (May 28th) garnered the award. For the summer, Prince George’s Lauren Vinson and Manchester’s Chris Ayers were rewarded.

Patton earned private school player of the week honors on May 7, scoring eight goals as Collegiate beat Deep Run, St. Gertrude and eventual public school state finalist Mills Godwin.

The eight goals were all of her team’s goals in that span.

McCabe got boys soccer player of the week May 28 after helping Atlee upset top-ranked Thomas Dale in the Central Region quarterfinals.

Vinson ended her Prince George high-school softball season and jumped right into travel ball, pitching 21 innings over one weekend to help her team to the national tournament in Las Vegas, NV.

Vinson was also the DigitalSports softball player of the year after leading the Royals to the Central Region tournament and state semifinals.

Ayers tears covers off baseballs for Manchester in the spring, but in the summer laces his cleats up with South Richmond Post 137 in American Legion.

Honored June 25, Ayers at the time was batting a ridiculous .671. He’s headed to VCU to continue his baseball career.

All four honored are currently seniors and some of the best student-athletes the Class of 2010 have to offer.
