Petersburg got a taste last season of what it was like to compete with the best teams in Virginia.
The Crimson Wave fell in overtime to Booker T. Washington in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.
Coach Bill Lawson III hopes that tough defeat will give Petersburg, ranked first in the DigitalSports preseason poll, the knowledge to go even further this season.
“One of the main reasons Booker T. Washington beat us was because of experience,” Lawson said. “They had been there before. That loss should make us understand what it takes to be there.”
Petersburg, though overall young, returns four starters from that team including second-team all-Central District honorees Ibn Rassoull and Terneil Rhodes. The lone starter gone is Jamar Cooper who graduated and averaged a team-high 20 ppg last season.
Rassoull (6-5, senior) can play guard or forward and is coming off a year in which he averaged 8.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists a game.
“Ibn creates a lot of mismatch problems,” Lawson said. “He can handle the ball like a guard and has great footwork.”
The 6-5 Rhodes (senior) was the Crimson Wave’s second leading scorer and rebounder last season at 11.5 ppg and 7.3 rpg.
“I am looking for him to do a lot of things offensively and defensively for us,” Lawson said.
At 6-8 Cadarian Raines is one of the tallest players on the team and was honorable mention for the Central District. Raines is one of Petersburg’s better defenders and Lawson said he will look for him to do a little more scoring since he has seen his offensive skills improve.
“We are going to have to find some scoring from somewhere with Jamar gone,” Lawson said.
The point guard position will be held by junior Chris Moore, a starter as a sophomore. He may be young but Lawson said he has been in some pretty tough situations and cannot stand to lose. The team has begun to call him ‘The General’ because of his leadership abilities.
The final starting spot is still up in the air but could be filled by either Highland Springs transfer John Holleman or Nathaniel Taylor. Taylor has been on varsity for three years though Holleman is pushing for some playing time. Regardless, Lawson doesn’t want his players to be focused on who will be starting but on everyone contributing.
“You could start and only play one second,” Lawson said. “What really matters is who finishes the game.”
After getting so far last season expectations will of course be high for the Crimson Wave, but Lawson prefers not to listen to them.
“There is a lot of pressure this year because we have so many returning starters,” Lawson said. “But everyone starts 0-0.”
