No. 1 Petersburg BB Preview

by Seneca Contomanolis
DigitalSports Richmond

Petersburg got a taste last season of what it was like to compete with the best teams in Virginia.

The Crimson Wave fell in overtime to Booker T. Washington in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.

Coach Bill Lawson III hopes that tough defeat will give Petersburg, ranked first in the DigitalSports preseason poll, the knowledge to go even further this season.

“One of the main reasons Booker T. Washington beat us was because of experience,” Lawson said. “They had been there before. That loss should make us understand what it takes to be there.”

Petersburg, though overall young, returns four starters from that team including second-team all-Central District honorees Ibn Rassoull and Terneil Rhodes. The lone starter gone is Jamar Cooper who graduated and averaged a team-high 20 ppg last season.

Rassoull (6-5, senior) can play guard or forward and is coming off a year in which he averaged 8.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists a game.

“Ibn creates a lot of mismatch problems,” Lawson said. “He can handle the ball like a guard and has great footwork.”

The 6-5 Rhodes (senior) was the Crimson Wave’s second leading scorer and rebounder last season at 11.5 ppg and 7.3 rpg.

“I am looking for him to do a lot of things offensively and defensively for us,” Lawson said.

At 6-8 Cadarian Raines is one of the tallest players on the team and was honorable mention for the Central District. Raines is one of Petersburg’s better defenders and Lawson said he will look for him to do a little more scoring since he has seen his offensive skills improve.

“We are going to have to find some scoring from somewhere with Jamar gone,” Lawson said.

The point guard position will be held by junior Chris Moore, a starter as a sophomore. He may be young but Lawson said he has been in some pretty tough situations and cannot stand to lose. The team has begun to call him ‘The General’ because of his leadership abilities.

The final starting spot is still up in the air but could be filled by either Highland Springs transfer John Holleman or Nathaniel Taylor. Taylor has been on varsity for three years though Holleman is pushing for some playing time. Regardless, Lawson doesn’t want his players to be focused on who will be starting but on everyone contributing.

“You could start and only play one second,” Lawson said. “What really matters is who finishes the game.”

After getting so far last season expectations will of course be high for the Crimson Wave, but Lawson prefers not to listen to them.

“There is a lot of pressure this year because we have so many returning starters,” Lawson said. “But everyone starts 0-0.”

No. 3 H. Springs BB Preview

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

Eight of 10 is a good percentage in any sport, especially basketball.

But not when it involves eight of your top 10 players leaving from a state Group AAA basketball champion.

That’s the reality that Highland Springs, ranked third in the DigitalSports Top 10 preseason poll, and coach George Lancaster have to deal with.

“I’m trying to teach them fundamentals,” Lancaster said. “I’m trying to get them in shape. I’m trying to find them a little moxie before the games are played.”

That only comes from tough practices, and the Springers are known for practices that are better than actual regular-season games. Monday’s practice was no different as 10-12 players are all battling for minutes like their lunch money depended on it. It’s special to watch.

“I just think it comes from the athletes, the players themselves,” Lancaster said. “We are a blue-collar program. If you carry the lunchpail, anything you lack in other areas are made up for with hard work and intensity.”

This is not the 2006-07 state champions. There won’t be two 20-point scorers like Brandon Rozzell (VCU) or Jamar Abrams (East Carolina), or a point guard that could control the contest like Jay Threatt (George Mason).

There will be more balance, there will be more size and there will be better rebounding.

The ball will start with Harvey Mills, one of the returning two that saw significant playing time last season. He hits bull’s-eyes from 3-point land. The other returner is football star receiver Harry Lee Daniel, a first-team all-Capital District pick as a sixth-man last season.

“He’s my do-it-all,” Lancaster said of Daniel. “He’s my queen. I can play him at guard, I can play him at forward, I can move him around. I expect him to rebound, defend, score and lead by example. He’s a tremendous role model for us, me included!”

Included in the rest of the key players are many juniors and seniors competing for playing time.

Look out for Kierre Winfield, a 6-3 senior wing that saw some action last season. He can score in many ways.

Inside the Springers are bolstered by many players, including Dazmond Starke (6-6), a transfer from Louisa. Chris Hilliard (6-4), Natwan Young (6-5), Deon Miller (6-6) and Ryan Henderson (6-5, transfer from George Wythe) are all looking for time in the Springer paint as well.

The competition for floor time doesn’t end there as junior Xavier Parham and senior Devan Hill are wrestling for a perimeter look. It all has Lancaster in a coaching zone, something he didn’t have to do much with the aforementioned three senior leaders on the floor.

“Everybody thinks that we’re not going to be very good. The kids are nervous,” Lancaster said of his inexperienced group trying to please those who expect another state championship to fall out of the sky. “They have to come out and be more than a respectable team. We want to show people that it’s not about players that we have, it’s about the school, it’s about the kids, it’s about the program, it’s about the community.

“By the first of the year, Highland Springs is going to be as good as anyone and better than most.”

2006-07 record: 12-0 Capital District, 28-2

Coach: George Lancaster, 29th season, 529-223

Key players:
Harry Lee Daniel, 6-2, Sr., G/F
– Slasher, leaper, good scorer and defender
Harvey Mills, 5-10, Sr., G – Great 3-point shooter, four-year varsity player
Kierre Winfield, 6-3, Sr., G/F – Super athletic, improving 3-point shot
Dazmond Starke, 6-6, Sr., F/C – Great finisher around the basket, big body, nice rebounder
Xavier Parham, 5-10, Jr., G – Quick, talented
Devan Hill, 5-7, Sr., G – Good shooter, terrific defender
Natwan Young, 6-5, Jr., F – Long, athletic, gaining confidence, good paint presence
Deon Miller, 6-6, Sr., F – Football wide receiver, athletic, didn’t play last season
Chris Hilliard, 6-5, Sr., G – Capable of big game, like region quarter against Dale in ’06-07

No. 4 Meadowbrook GB Preview

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

Meadowbrook girls basketball coach Mike Knight got a couple of steals and is working wonderfully with his new merchandise.

The Monarchs, ranked fourth in the DigitalSports preseason top 10, are bolstered by two transfers from city schools, Crystal Smith from Huguenot and Deja Middleton, formerly of John Marshall.

Smith is a wippet-fast point guard with a flair for the game and the ability to please a crowd at any given moment.

Middleton is about 6-3 and has improved her touch around the basket dramatically. Knight has been working on all parts of her game since she set foot on Meadowbrook’s campus.

That’s not the only talent that Knight has.

Jessica “Peanut” Arnold returns for her senior year as she can move to the shooting guard to do what she does best and make room for Smith and her playmaking. Her veteran presence should help tremendously.

The Monarchs also have a talented sophomore in Courtney Coleman that will see time on the wing. Knight also expects twin freshmen Kiara and Katrina Marks to make an impact.

Meadowbrook has the ability to run the floor with the best of them. If they consistently finish their layups and don’t get too careless in the open floor, the Monarchs can be even better than last year with super-scorer Channa Willis.

2006-07 record: 12-2 Central, 16-10

Coach: Mike Knight, second season at Meadowbrook

Key players:
Crystal Smith, 5-6, Jr., PG – Fancy, great passer, quick, good defender, excellent vision and handle
Deja Middleton, 6-3, Sr., C – Improved finisher around the basket, better FT shooter, good rebounder and outlet passer
Jessica Arnold, 5-6, Sr., G – Great 3-point shooter, tough, veteran
Courtney Coleman, 5-7, So., F – Scrappy, talented, great off-the-ball defender

No. 4 Hermitage BB Preview

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

Hermitage’s football team is putting up a showing that will be tough to duplicate for its basketball team.

The Panthers wouldn’t want it any other way.

“We have some big goals and high expectations,” sixth-year Hermitage coach Joe Coulter said. “They know it’s going to come through hard work.”

The gridiron Panthers are set to take on Woodbridge, the Northwest region champ, Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The hoop team doesn’t quite have state tournament tickets, or even region and district admission as of yet, but the returning crew should punch a bunch of stubs. That’s why their the fourth-ranked team in the DigitalSports preseason poll.

Another reason is Wesley Simmons. The lanky, athletic senior put up 16 points and six rebounds last season for a 13-9 Hermitage team, and should add to his impressive numbers this season.

“In practice we work hard,” Simmons said. “This is my third year on the team and I can already tell the difference in practice.”

The 18-year-old has improved his ball handling, passing and leadership skills.

The same can be said for Gabe McNeal, returning for his second year at the point guard spot. At 6-3, McNeal is a matchup nightmare to go along with a 2-to-1 turnover-to-assist ratio in 2006-07.

“All summer long I was out playing and working on my decision making,” McNeal said. “This season we’re a lot better. We’re learning to share the ball a lot more.”

The aforementioned duo hasn’t shared the ball with three key members of the team this preseason. Duan Perez-Means, Theron Norman and Ju-Ju Clayton are chasing a state Group AAA Division 6 football title to go along with its region crown.

Whenever they arrive – and an unselfish Coulter stresses later is better for everyone – Hermitage will instantly become a better team. Perez-Means and Norman are set to be starters.

Perez-Means put in eight points and eight rebounds as a starter last season, Coulter’s looking for a double-double from the junior, and Norman was a part-time starter.

That’s given younger players like 6-7 juniors Herman Kinard and Derek Parker quality playing time with the starting unit in practice and scrimmages.

“The overall thing is that it is great for the school,” said Coulter, who is the announcer for the football team. “Myself and [football coach Patrick] Kane have done a great job of sharing athletes.

“We’re excited about this year. We’re excited about the whole program.”

2006-07 record: 9-7 Colonial District, 13-9

Coach: Joe Coulter, 6th season, 91-36 record

Key players:
Wesley Simmons, 6-3, Sr., G
– Nice jumper, leaper, leader, wiry, athletic
Gabe McNeal, 6-3, Sr., PG – Consummate floor general, turnover record great, nice jumpshot
Duan Perez-Means, 6-4, Jr., F – Soft touch around basket, tough, physical
Theron Norman, 6-4, Jr., G – Long, lanky, athletic
Manny Winston, 6-0, Jr., G – Great shooter, smart player

No. 5 Mills Godwin GB Preview

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

There’s an old adage in high-school basketball. Good guards, good team.

Well, Mills Godwin girls coach Louise Foley certainly hopes that’s true.

The Eagles, ranked fifth in the DigitalSports preseason top 10, have a standout perimeter with much depth from last year’s state quarterfinalist.

“We are guard-oriented,” Foley said. “So we’ll try to run more. We’ve got a lot of good shooters. I think we’ll have depth.”

It starts with Maggie Roy, who is in her second year as the lead guard. Her ball handling is much improved and her shot is still there.

“Her scoring took a backseat last year,” Foley said. “This year, she’ll definitely be one of our top players.”

Joining her on the wings will be Brooke Long and Michelle Foley. Long is athletic, a good scorer and an instinctive passer.

You can’t leave Foley open on the wing, or its three points. Her overall game has improved, as well as her quickness.

It doesn’t stop there, as sophomores Andrea Sisson and Sallie Foster are also an excellent shooters. Foster, the field hockey star, is also a tough defender.

The Eagles will certainly lean on their strength, but will be an even better team if the young inside players mature. Coach Foley will definitely miss the graduated Mallory Short, one of the best post players in the region for the past few years.

Sophomore forwards Brooke Withrow (5-10) and Kathryn Teague (6-1) will try to do their part to help out the potent guard play. Now Godwin will try to continue what it started last season.

“We’ll keep building on what we had last year,” Foley said. “They had a taste last year of what it takes to get to [the state] level.”

2006-07 record: 15-1 Colonial, 26-4

Coach: Louise Foley, third season at Mills Godwin

Key players:
Brooke Long, 5-9, Sr., G – Scorer, athletic, versatile, good passer
Maggie Roy, 5-9, Sr., PG – Much-improved ball handler, good shooter
Michelle Foley, 5-10, Jr., G – Great shooter, fundamentally sound, improved foot speed
Sallie Foster, 5-7, So., G – Nice jumpshot, tough defender

No. 5 L.C. Bird BB Preview

by Seneca Contomanolis
DigitalSports Richmond

Making it to the Central Region quarterfinals last season was a gratifying accomplishment for the L.C. Bird boys basketball team.

This season, that just won’t do.

“We want to make it further,” Everette Jasper said. “We want to go to the region championship and make it to states.”

Mills Godwin ended the Seahawks’ year in overtime of the quarters and one of coach Chuck Tester‘s top priorities will be to find someone to fill the shoes of Dominion District player of the year Jordan Brown, who started all four year on varsity and was the team’s leading scorer.

That will begin with returning starters Rico Ferguson, Kendrick McClary and Travis Keels.

Ferguson, a 6-1 shooting guard, is one of the better all-around players on L.C. Bird, ranked fifth in the DigitalSports preseason top 10.

“He knows the game real well,” Tester said. “He’s a pretty good shooter, a good ball handler and a good passer.”

Seniors McClary (6-4) and Keels (6-6) will be looked upon to give L.C. Bird some height down low. McClary only recently joined the Seahawks at practice, along with a few others, because he is a tight end on the football team. This has caused some of the players to be a week behind in their progress.

“Kendrick’s size is his main thing,” Tester said. “He is hard to handle inside and as long as we keep him on the blocks we should be alright.”

Keels will be able to play inside or outside due to his shooting and ball handling abilities. He also runs the floor well for a big man and should get better as the year goes on, Tester said.

The first player off the bench last season, Jasper will now be a starter. He is another big body that can rebound well, one of the Seahawks’ main strengths along with the team’s overall height.

“Everette is going to play a huge role in how we do,” Tester said.

The 5-7 Marvin Woodley will round out the starting five at point guard and is hustler who doesn’t take any plays off. Scott Palimore (6-4) will play the role of sixth-man.

As the season quickly nears, Tester wants to see the team’s defense and shooting improve more but he ultimately believes that the finished product is still a ways off.

“It will still be two or three weeks before we get to where we should be,” Tester said.

2006-07 record: 13-3 Dominion, 18-8

Coach: Chuck Tester

Key players:
Rico Ferguson, 6-1, Jr., G – all-around good player, knows the game
Kendrick McClary, 6-4, Sr., C – size is his biggest asset, hard to guard down low
Travis Keels, 6-6, Sr., C – good outside shooter and ball handler for his size
Everette Jasper, 6-1, Sr., F – strong, rebounds well
Marvin Woodley, 5-7, Sr., G – hustler, plays hard, decent outside shooter
