Girls basketball, 1/30: Henderson, D takes over

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

“I’ve told her she’s a better player than she thinks she is.”

How good was Atlee’s Sydney Henderson for coach Anna Prillaman Friday night?

She scored 26 points, 16 in the second half, as the Raiders rallied to top rival Hanover 61-50.

The Raiders, ranked fourth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, trailed 31-16 on a Amanda Woolard (13 points) bucket a few minutes into the second quarter.

Atlee outscored No. 8 Hanover 19-10 to end the half as Henderson registered eight points and two assists in the spurt to bring Atlee within six at the break.

She was far from finished.

Henderson scored the first eight points of the third quarter for Atlee, before Richelle Price (12 points, 10 boards, four steals, three blocks) stroked a trey off a feed from Sydney’s sister Taylor (nine points).

That put Atlee within the shortest striking distance, down one at 47-46 heading into the final eight minutes.

Here came Sydney Henderson again. She got a steal off of terrific defensive pressure and converted on the other end for Atlee’s first lead since 8-6, ironically on Sydney’s first points of the game.

By this point, Henderson had registered her 1,000th point of her fabulous career.

A few second later she put in a 3-pointer, her fifth of the game, to force a timeout by Hanover coach Kevin Brooks.

However, the Hawks could get nothing going offensively in the second half, scoring nine points total after scorching the net for 41 in the first 16 minutes.

Hanover scored only three points in the deciding fourth period as Atlee moved to 14-0 all-time versus Hanover in girls basketball.

“They shot well both halves,” Brooks said. “The second half, we just couldn’t put the ball in the basket.”

Chelsea Coward had 18 points, Woolard 13 and Kim Browning 10 for Hanover. All but four of their points total came in the first half.

“Chelsea Coward had an out-of-her-mind game,” Prillaman said of the Longwood-bouncd forward. “They were hitting [shots] in the first half. It wasn’t fun to watch.”

Prillaman had a little better time watching the Henderson sisters, Price and Britt Hill (17 points) – who scored all of Atlee’s points – lead the comeback.

“They didn’t seem very shaky tonight,” said Prillaman, who mentioned the Raiders have gotten a bit jittery after trailing in games. “Obviously, the lead was erased pretty quickly.”

Atlee 13 22 11 18 – 64
Hanover 23 18 6 3 – 50
Atlee (): Hill 17, Spiers 0, S. Henderson 26, T. Henderson 9, Price 12, Ashcraft 0. Totals: 21 13-19 64. 3-point goals: S. Henderson 5, Hill 2, T. Henderson, Price.
Hanover (): Dillich 3, Coward 18, Hill 6, Jordan 0, Woolard 13, Browning 10. Totals: 18 9-12 50. 3-point goals: Woolard 3, Browning 2.

Boys basketball, 1/29: Cadets rout Cougars

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

If Benedictine could bottle and sell what motivated them to dismantle Collegiate by 45 points Thursday evening, a lot of Cadets would be rich.

The Cadets, playing with loads of energy and passion, whipped the Cougars 77-32 in front of their home faithful.

The fuel? Rankings.

Benedictine, with seven losses, is slotted 10th in the latest Times-Dispatch Poll and eighth in the state private school poll.

The Cougars are marked seventh and fourth, respectively. It spelled trouble for Collegiate.

“When you don’t have to say anything as a coach, it’s helpful,” said Benedictine coach Sean McAloon, who posted the rankings earlier in the week. “That’s what we’ve been doing. Our schedule’s been tough.”

Not as tough as a full-court, man-to-man defense that began to stifle Collegiate once it took an early 7-3 lead. The Cadets won the first quarter finishing on a 14-6 run, only a snippet of what was to come.

The Cadets ruled the second period, registering a blistering 26-2 performance headlined by red-hot shooting from Darien Brothers.

The University of Richmond-bound guard had 15 of his game-high 29 points in the period, as Collegiate scored one field goal with 1:47 left in the quarter.

A dominating period to say the least.

“It started from the beginning of the game,” Brothers said. “We got after it on defense, got a couple of leak outs to start my groove. From then on I started hitting my shots.”

Everyone was hitting shots for the Cadets, as four Benedictine players scored as much or more as Collegiate’s high scorer, Jake McGee (seven points).

Brandan Connor, in his third game back from a broken arm, had 16 points. Terrific sophomore R.J. Price had 10 points and Kevin Gill put in seven.

The lead got as big as 48 points on a Connor trey with 2:54 left in the contest.

“We just wanted to come out and prove that the state polls don’t mean anything,” Connor said. “Go out there and show that we’re better than everyone thinks we are.”

Collegiate coach Alex Peavey knows how good Benedictine played.

“We’ve seen the type of quickness they have before,” Peavey said. “But what they did tonight is bring a level of energy we didn’t respond to.”

Let’s see how the polls respond next week.

Collegiate    13   2   8   9 – 32
Benedictine 17 26 20 14 – 77
Collegiate (10-5): Corrigan 6, C. Kelley 2, T. Kelley 4, Hungerford 0, Hawthorne 0, Wiltshire 2, Franz 2, Foley 2, Gottschalk 2, McGee 7, Stites 2, Foster 1, Agee 2. Totals: 13 5-6 32. 3-point goal: McGee.
Benedictine (11-7): Moody 3, Brothers 29, Gill 7, Connor 16, Lukish 4, Price 10, Thurston 6, Tiller 2, Pilot 0, Shaheen 0. Totals: 31 9-15 77. 3-point goals: Connor 2, Price 2, Brothers, Gill.

Ben Dejarnette – Jan. 28 The Player’s Lounge

– Ben Dejarnette is a senior distance runner for the Atlee Raiders,
excelling in the fall, winter and spring seasons. He is set to run for a major
college or university after his 2008 graduation and is also a DigitalSports
intern. His blog will appear here consistently.

It’s been a busy two months since my cross country season ended with a thud at Footlocker South.

On the running front, I took a long hiatus from competition to focus on my training. It was a long, rather boring spell of repetitive high-mileage weeks, but my first race seemed to be a sign that my fitness is progressing according to plan.

I used a strong kick in the last 550m to win the mile at the Virginia Tech Invitational with a personal-best 4:15.64. Next up is a 3200m race at the St. Christopher’s Invitational this Saturday.

It’s definitely an exciting time to be a distance runner in the state of Virginia, as we seem to be establishing ourselves as the deepest group in the country.

A writer from Dyestat.com interviewed me after my race at Tech and agreed that so far this track season, VA has proven it is the state to beat.

To give a little perspective, as of this past weekend, three of the country’s four fastest 3200m times belonged to Virginians. As outstanding as that is, Andrew Colley, Alex Ott and I still have not even run that event this season.

Colley broke the state meet course record in cross country this fall, Ott was a Footlocker Nationals finalist, and I consider the 3200 my best event. It will be exciting to see how everything plays out this winter and spring.

As for my college search, I took visits to William & Mary and the University of Oregon, both of which I loved. The decision was incredibly difficult, but in the end I decided I want to be a Duck!

I just couldn’t turn down the chance to spend the next four years training and living in Track Town, USA.

Go Ducks!!!

Breaking FB news, 1/27: Smalley to Old Dominion

All-everything wide receiver Monty Smalley committed to Old Dominion Monday.

“I connected with the campus as soon as I got there,” Smalley said of his official visit this past weekend. “The coaching staff is just great there. I can tell they really care about their players.”

What a player Douglas Freeman’s 5-8, 160-pounder was. He blasted a Douglas Freeman record with 56 catches.

Smalley had almost 900 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, including two receptions that went 90 yards or more, one against Hermitage (98 yards) and one versus Highland Springs, two of the Central Region’s stingiest defenses.

“My goal was to play college football,” Smalley said. “I had to do everything I could to make that. Every time I got the ball I tried to make a play. It’s turned out well so far.”

Girls basketball, 1/27: Cosby outduels Monacan

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

Monacan shot just about as good as it can Tuesday night, and Cosby still won.

The Titans, ranked first in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, created enough turnovers and responded at the right times to beat the No. 10 Chiefs 71-59.

Monacan’s Keyla Pullen ran off six straight points to start the second half, then freshman Raven Williams nailed a 3-pointer to slice Cosby’s lead to 43-39 and force a Rachel Mead timeout.

From there, Cosby went on a quick 8-2 run, paced by 3-pointers from unsung players Kaylor Nichols (nine points) and Kelsey Conyers (10).

The lead was 10 points and too tough to overcome with Cosby hitting timely 3-pointers outside, and using their size advantage inside.

Andrea Bertrand poured in a game-high 21 points, 15 came in the second half.

On one possession, Cosby dominated the offensive glass, missing four shots at the basket before Bertrand converted. She had 10 rebounds.

“We got more patient. We started working inside more,” Mead said. “With our size advantage we have to do that.”

Cosby’s Jazmin Pitts (11 boards) had eight of her 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Chiefs scrapped behind Williams to stay close.

Williams had a team-high 20 points, 14 in the second half, including four 3-pointers.

One of her bombs reduced the lead to 11, but Cosby would score right afterward to keep Monacan at bay.

“We tried to play tight man-to-man defense and get a hand in their face,” Bertrand said. “At least it was a little more difficult for them to shoot it. But they still did shoot very well.

“We did have a very well-rounded game. We had some shots inside and shots outside that were falling.”

Becca Wann added 11 points for Cosby, as she battled foul trouble all evening.

Candice Silas had 15 points to help the Chiefs, and Pullen and another freshman Gabby Harris both had 10 points, including three 3-pointers from Harris.

The Chiefs hit eight from distance in the game, but couldn’t halt Cosby enough to pull off the victory.

Monacan 14 16 18 11 – 59
Cosby     19 20 17 15 – 71
Monacan (5-6 Dominion, 9-8):
Pullen 10, K. Keys 0, Rainey 4, Williams 20, Harris 10, Backe 0, Johnson 0, Silas 15. Totals: 23 5-7 59. 3-point goals: Williams 4, Harris 3, Silas.
Cosby (9-1, 15-1): Nichols 9, Conyers 10, Wann 11, Lennox 0, Katzman 2, Bertrand 21, Horton 0, Gillespie 0, Pitts 18. Totals: 25 17-26 59. 3-point goals: Nichols 2, Conyers, Wann.

Girls hoops POW – Jan. 27

Porche’ Bentley
Manchester Lancers

Height: 5-9    Age: 18    Year: Senior

Performance: Poured in 35 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and five steals and blocked two shots in a win over No. 10 Monacan. A night before, Bentley had 31 points, 17 boards and five more steals to help top Meadowbrook. She added 16 points, 10 boards, four steals and two blocks in limited action against George Wythe.

On her huge performances this past week: “Well, we had some really tough games so I didn’t want to lose them, especially when we had to play Monacan and Meadowbrook. Last year with Meadowbrook we didn’t do so well, then last time when we played Monacan we didn’t do so well. We were all on the same page.”

Funniest teammate: “There’s a couple of them. I probably have to go with Jessica Clanton, my point guard. She’s just goofy. She has one of the best senses of humor on the team.”

Favorite WNBA & NBA player: “It would definitely have to be Candace Parker. For the NBA it’s between Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade. There’s something about Kobe and there’s something about D-Wade.”

Guard or inside: Before transferring from the Tidewater area, Bentley was a guard. Now with her height-challenged team, she plays inside and does it well.
“It was something I had to get used to. Down in Tidewater my coach was grooming me more as a guard. When I came up here I had to switch that whole mentality around. When you love the game as much as I do, you do whatever you can to try to make yourself that much better. I went to the outside courts and played with the guys so I can get stronger. Having brothers, they kind of helped me, and having guys friends, they taught me some things that would help me.”

Favorite subject: “Science.”

If you had one wish: “To own my own business and make sure my mom [Cathy Brown] is set for life.”

Toughest opponent: “Myself. Because if I don’t do something to my best ability I get down on myself. I try to push myself harder and harder and harder, but sometimes I push myself to the limit. I do it to get better.”

On recruiting: “I’ve gotten some letters, talked to a couple of schools. I think if I work hard and continue to play like I’ve been playing, hopefully I can play at any level.”

On season: “It’s wonderful. It feels great. It shows everybody that just because we weren’t counted on to win, we’re just as good as anybody else. All of us, the whole team are always talking about the polls, and what we need to do to get better. We wanted to prove that we can play just as hard as a Cosby, a Monacan or a Bird. I think we’ve proved ourselves.”

Goals: “Just stay focused, don’t stray, make sure that I do everything that I’m supposed to do and everything that I need to do. Continue the chemisty that the team has.”

– Stephen M. Lewis
