Football, 10/30/09: Hanover 28, No. 9 Atlee 7

Hanover County belongs to the Hawks.

Hanover finished off a 3-0 season versus its neighbors with a dominant 28-7 victory over Atlee, the No. 9 team in the DigitalSports Top 10, Friday night.

The Hawks stopped Patrick Henry 34-16 in the opener and topped Lee-Davis in a shootout 40-38 two weeks ago.

But this was far from a shootout, as Blake Jones, Marzae Brooks, Matt Pocta and Brad Goldsmith led a tremendous defensive effort.

“We came together and we played Hanover style football. Like the Nebraska black shirts back in the 90s,” a fired up Jones said. “We just came together. It was awesome.”

No offense was awesome in the first half as both defenses dominated.

Hanover popped Atlee QB Drew Ferguson on a scramble and Danny Trsic scooped up the fumbled and raced to the 8-yard line.

Three plays later Chris Lee punched his ticket to the end zone from a yard out for the only score of the first half.

Each squad traded possession twice to start the third period when Hanover punted to Atlee’s talented freshman C.J. Watkins (six carries, 38 yards), who was a bright spot offensively.

But he muffed the punt. Hanover recovered.

Freshman Hanover QB Sam Rogers threw a laser to Danny Trsic, who converted the slant pattern for an 11-yard score.

Matt Palmen‘s extra point gave Hanover a 14-0 lead as the Hawks would score on their next two possessions, a 34-yard jaunt by Deane Cheatham (21 carries, 154 yards) after he converted a fourth-and-1 on a fake punt, and a 43-yard bolt by Rogers as the ninth grader showed his wheels.

“They had a lot of guys stacked up right in front,” Rogers said. “Once you pass the first level it was one-on-one with the safety and I was able to get around him.”

Atlee’s offense couldn’t get around much, totaling 120 yards without senior QB Dylan Garthright, out with an injured fibula suffered against Armstrong last week.

“They did some things defensively I didn’t expect for them to do,” Atlee coach Roscoe Johnson said. “I take full blame for this game. We weren’t prepared because of me.

“Our defense did all they could to keep us in the game. I just made some bonehead calls.”

Field hockey, 10/29/09: Lee-Davis 2, Atlee 1

by Stephen M. Lewis

Atlee hadn’t lost a match against a district opponent all year – until Thursday night.

That’s when two first-half goals less than five minutes apart, propelled Lee-Davis to a 2-1 victory over the Raiders in the Capital District field hockey tournament final at Henrico High, L-D’s third tournament crown in a row.

Freshman Amy Wingfield struck first, a laser from the left side of the goal just inside the circle.

Moments later, Lee-Davis used a free hit from the right side and a nice cross to an open Haley Mathews.

The terrific senior deposited it as the Confederates were off and running.

“We just played our hardest,” Mathews said. “Everybody says it’s tough to beat a team three times in a row, and obviously that’s true. We had a battle last night [in a two-OT win over Hanover]. We were all tired.

“But we came out here and did what we had to do.”

What L-D had to do was halt a strong offensive attack from Atlee.

Laura Beckler put in a goal a few minutes after Mathews on a corner feed from Sonia Anderson as the game went into halftime 2-1 Confederates.

Most of the second half was played in Lee-Davis’ half as the Raiders had opportunity after opportunity.

But L-D and keeper Sarah Clare (14 saves), a first-team all-district pick, were up to the task.

“I’m happy with the way we played,” said Atlee coach Alyssa Farling, whose Raiders won every district match save a tie to Hanover. “I think we dominated. Their defense gets the credit. Their goalie made some great saves.”

Said Clare: “I have so much confidence in my defense, and I knew we were going to get it out. I was just waiting for that whistle to blow.”

Both teams advance to the Central Region tournament that begins Monday.

Atlee, the No. 1 seed out of the Capital, will host Mills Godwin, the Colonial tournament champions who gave the Raiders their other blemish.

“We’re really looking forward to that,” Farling said.

Lee-Davis will travel to Colonial regular-season champ Maggie Walker GS, the region runner-up last season. The teams have not met this season.

Field hockey, 10/27/09: St. Catherine’s 3, Collegiate 2

GOOCHLAND – Lakers-Celtics in the 80s. 49ers-Cowboys in the 90s. Yankees-Red Sox right now.

It’s all relative, but St. Catherine’s-Collegiate field hockey is on this level of intensity and the Saints have bragging rights, at least for another week.

St. Catherine’s beat Collegiate 3-2 Tuesday, the Saints second win over the Cougars this season.

As a result, St. Catherine’s takes the LIS regular-season crown, and is happy about it.

“We’ve been preparing for this game,” Saints tri-captain Chaney Manganello said, “and knew how big it was to be LIS champions. We’ve been practicing for it and working for it since the beginning of the season. We just came out ready to play.”

The Saints were more than ready to play, putting up two early goals, both off corners.

The first was a bullet from Kali Vicars, as the sophomore midfielder unloaded on a shot passed Collegiate keeper Taylor Thomas.

Minutes later, SC racked up another penalty corner and took a little more care and time with short passes.

Eventually, Anna Sauer was open in front and deposited the ball for a 2-0 advantage only 13 minutes into the game.

“Every time we play St. Catherine’s, it’s the national championship for them,” Collegiate coach Karen Doxey said. “Everybody’s fired up.”

So were the Cougars after Janie O’Connor drew a penalty stroke and beat Kristen Wolenberg.

But the feeling was short-lived as only a minute later, Alexis Crittenden shocked Collegiate with St. Catherine’s third goal.

From there, the Saints had to fend off unbelievable defensive pressure from Collegiate, and many offensive opportunities.

Collegiate took 16 shots, and got a score from Margaret Williams midway through the second half, but would scratch no more as Wolenberg logged 15 saves.

“I really want to see the tape,” Doxey said when asked about the Saints’ first-half offensive success. “I’m really not too sure. I just think it’s people not marking.”

Mark an LIS championship to St. Catherine’s. The two could match up two more times as the LIS tournament begins next week, with the state tournament the week after.

“Scoring off the bat was really helpful because it built our momentum,” Manganello said. “It just kept us going. We just kept fighting.”

Something these two teams will keep doing for a long while.

SC: Vicars, Sauer, Crittenden
C: O’Connor, Williams

Top players honored, 10/25/09

American Family Fitness, Fox Richmond and DigitalSports have teamed up to honor players of the week in a myriad of sports each season.

In each of those seasons, a male and female player of the week will be chosen to receive a three-month membership to American Family Fitness and gifts from Fox Richmond.

Four from last season were honored recently.

For the spring season, Collegiate’s Becky Patton and Atlee’s Mike McCabe (May 28th) garnered the award. For the summer, Prince George’s Lauren Vinson and Manchester’s Chris Ayers were rewarded.

Patton earned private school player of the week honors on May 7, scoring eight goals as Collegiate beat Deep Run, St. Gertrude and eventual public school state finalist Mills Godwin.

The eight goals were all of her team’s goals in that span.

McCabe got boys soccer player of the week May 28 after helping Atlee upset top-ranked Thomas Dale in the Central Region quarterfinals.

Vinson ended her Prince George high-school softball season and jumped right into travel ball, pitching 21 innings over one weekend to help her team to the national tournament in Las Vegas, NV.

Vinson was also the DigitalSports softball player of the year after leading the Royals to the Central Region tournament and state semifinals.

Ayers tears covers off baseballs for Manchester in the spring, but in the summer laces his cleats up with South Richmond Post 137 in American Legion.

Honored June 25, Ayers at the time was batting a ridiculous .671. He’s headed to VCU to continue his baseball career.

All four honored are currently seniors and some of the best student-athletes the Class of 2010 have to offer.
