Football, 10/23/09: Bird 27, Clover Hill 3

The road to a ninth straight Dominion District title has become much less bumpy for L.C. Bird.

The Skyhawks, ranked second in the Fox/DigitalSports Top 10, dispatched of No. 8 Clover Hill 27-3 Friday night.

They are now at least two games ahead of all district opponents as Cosby fell to Manchester in a wild 54-53 contest, and Bird gave the Cavs their second district loss.

Behind a stout defense that surrenders less than eight points per game, Bird concentrated on bottling up the super talented Joel Caleb and did so, keeping CH out of the end zone while allowing 117 yards of total offense.

Anthony Harris ran for 124 yards and a TD on 11 carries from his quarterback spot. He hit Stephen Lee on a 12-yard pass as Bird jumped ahead 14-0.

Lee had five catches for 67 yards and also played a pivotal role defensively.

Lionel Williams ran in from two yards out and Bird took a 21-0 lead into halftime and didn’t look back.

Field hockey, 10/21/09: D. Freeman 4, D. Run 1

Douglas Freeman scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to pull away from Deep Run in field hockey Wednesday.

To start the second half, the Rebels, ranked fifth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, thwarted a few nice opportunities for No. 8 Deep Run and locked the ball in their half offensively.

But the Wildcat defense was up to the task, thwarting penalty corner after penalty corner, six straight to be exact. Ashley Cureton‘s speed hindered every attack.

Freeman coach Tara Hundley called timeout after the fifth corner failed.

“I just told them they need to crash the goal and be persistent,” Hundley said.

The seventh time was the charm as Aidan Ziegler, after she passed it in, knocked in a rebound for a 2-1 lead.

It opened the flood gates for the Rebels, along with Deep Run being a man down because of an illegal use of the stick penalty.

Julia Wingfield found the goal five minutes later on a slow dribbler from the top of the circle that skirted through several players.

Then at the 2:44-mark, Carter Barnett completed the scoring, putting in her second of the contest.

“It was really exciting because we had been so close and it was tied 1-1,” Ziegler said. “We just kept hitting it back at the goalie and finally I was able to eek one in there. It was really exciting and it gave us the momentum we need to pull out a 4-1 win.”

Game note: Get healthy!
Deep Run played without leading scorer Audrey Hester and starting keeper Rebecca Oliver, who were both sick.

Freeman’s whole team is also battling the flu, and was down three players after having only 12 available in a win Monday. After Hundley’s second-half timeout, Freeman’s whole bench was coughing uncontrollably.

Both teams need to be at full strength with the Colonial District tournament next week.

Girls volleyball, 10/20: James River 3, Cosby 1

Tougher Dominion District, tougher James River.

The Rapids’ girls volleyball team is on its way to an unbeaten district mark after a four-game triumph over Cosby Tuesday night.

James River, ranked first in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, is now 11-0 in the district, 17-2 overall.

Fifth-ranked Cosby dropped to 7-3, 14-4, but stole the first game from the visiting Rapids 25-22.

Reigning player of the week Jessica Melhorn (10 kills, 16 digs), Abigayle Holt (31 assists) and Morgan Dowdy () got things going early for the upset-minded Titans.

But James River quickly righted the ship winning three straight sets, including a dominant 25-14 third game that displayed a plethora of weapons.

Cassie Stergar (18 kills, six blocks, six digs), Taralyn Barnette and Carol Pyszkowski are all taller than any Titans and dominated the net.

Kate Darlington used her powerful outside hitting (10 kills) and jump serving (five aces) to provide yet another weapon that setter Julia Cushman (40 assists, 11 digs) could feed for the Rapids.

“We’ve had better players individually,” James River coach Micah White said, in his last season coaching the Rapids. “But this is a better team, top to bottom.”

It’s not back to the drawing board for Cosby.

“A positive thing is that we played a lot better than the first match,” Cosby coach Megan Edwards said of Cosby’s first loss to James River, also in four games. “And we still didn’t play as best as we could.”

James River had places to go after the match. The girls bolted out of Cosby’s immaculate gymnasium to see their boys volleyball team finish off new No. 1 Cosby.

Coach White, a talented comedian, had a show after the match. They hope to bolt to region and state success just as quickly.

“There was a rough beginning in the first game when we lost,” Cushman said. “We’re excited to get ready for this district tournament, region tournament and hopefully states.”
