Turner, Deep Run Top Douglas Freeman 2-0

by Chris Naquin
DigitalSports Richmond

Deep Run
, ranked sixth in the DigitalSports Top 10, defeated Douglas Freeman 2-0 in Wednesday night’s game.

Wildcats junior forward Amy Turner scored two goals in the victory.

The first goal came with 15 minutes left in the first half, when junior defender Grace Seal sent a long ball down the sideline to a running Turner who was able to chip Douglas Freeman goalkeeper Megan MacLean to go up 1-0.

Deep Run came dangerously close to scoring several more times with some good runs up front by sophomore forward Rachel Powers, who found herself behind the Rebel defense many times but was unable to finish on goal.

It did not take long for Turner to find the back of the net a second time.

Just eight minutes into the second half, Turner beat a Rebel defender at the top of the box and fired a shot into the goal to take a 2-0 lead.

“A lot of my players played great,” Turner said. “They played some great through balls and I was able to run onto them and hit them in the net.”

Douglas Freeman tried to push numbers forward towards the end of the game but could not get any chances on goal as Deep Run would take the win.

Deep Run            1 1 – 2
Douglas Freeman 0 0 – 0

DR: Turner 2
Records: Deep Run (3-0 Colonial, 8-1-2); Douglas Freeman (1-1, 3-6)

Green Dragons Catch Fire

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

Amarachi Eseonu and Kelly Diaz scored two goals apiece to lead Maggie Walker GS to a 7-0 victory over J.R. Tucker Tuesday evening in Colonial District action.

Eseonu got things started very early for the No. 8 Green Dragons, ranked eighth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10.

The senior took fellow forward Deirdre Gill‘s throw in, beat a couple of Tigers and sneaked the ball past freshman keeper Kelsey Hoffman for the game’s first goal.

Only a few minutes later, Rachel Semus led Kelly Diaz beautifully as she shook a charging Hoffman and found the goal as the Green Dragons were off and running.

“It was a good game,” Diaz said. “We tried some different offensive strategies and it worked out pretty well.”

April Price, Maggie Walker’s two-sport star who was coming off of a back injury, entered the game and brought an immediate spark.

The senior forward found Eseonu for a 3-0 lead, before putting a beauty in front that Lauren Paul finished for a 4-0 advantage.

Tucker then fouled Price in the box and she converted the penalty kick for a 5-0 halftime advantage.

Semus scored to start the second half for Maggie Walker.

But the Tigers slowed Maggie Walker’s attack in the second half, but had few opportunities of their own.

When they did, Green Dragons freshman keeper Cheta Emba was up to the task.

Diaz tacked on the final goal on a terrificly played ball from Semus as the Green Dragons get ready for second-ranked Mills Godwin.

The Eagles will visit Maggie Walker Thursday at 7 p.m.

Price’s status for the contest is uncertain as she left the game in the first half after her penalty kick score with an injured knee.

In fact, Eseonu, Kelsey Sawyer and Margaret Benson each left the contest at one point for Maggie Walker, but each returned.

No Stopping Thomas Dale

by Chris Naquin
DigitalSports Richmond

Thomas Dale, ranked third in the DigitalSports Top 10, defeated tenth-ranked Matoaca 2-0 in its home game on Tuesday night.

The Knights were led by their two star captains, senior midfielder Patrick Innes and junior midfielder Will Bates who each had a goal and an assist in the win.

The Knights dominated the Warriors from the beginning of the game by keeping possession of the ball and creating several dangerous scoring opportunities.

The first goal of the match came from one of many dangerous corner kicks by Innes, as he delivered a hard in-swinger to the near post where a crashing Bates met it with his head and deflected it into the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.

“I felt we came out kind of slow and sluggish,” Innes said. “We had a dozen corner kicks in the first half and couldn’t seem to score until Will got on the end of one. Once we scored, it lightened up the game and we were able to knock it around a bit.”

The game definitely opened up for Thomas Dale in the second half.

It only took three minutes for the Knights to score again.

This time it was Bates who would assist Innes on the goal as he slotted a nice through ball to Innes who was able to finish from six yards out to take a 2-0 lead.

The Knights continued to pressure the Warriors the remainder of the match and almost scored a few more but they could not seem to get their shots on frame.

Matoaca’s offense was no where to be found as they were shut out by the Knights defense who broke up every type of attack the Warriors created.

Thomas Dale remains undefeated at 11-0 this season and are looking forward to playing other power house squads such as Deep Run and Cosby.

“We are looking forward to Regionals,” Bates said. “Especially after losing to Cosby last year, we want to get back at them. As for Deep Run, we know a lot of those guys so we are looking forward to it.”

Matoaca          0 0 – 0
Thomas Dale    1 1 – 2

TD: Bates, Innes
Saves: Burdick (M) 7; Lehman (TD) 3
Records: Matoaca (6-2-1 Central, 6-2-1); Thomas Dale (9-0, 11-0)

Best trait:
“My backhand.” Calhoun has played tennis for 12 years.

Funniest teammate:Michael Baxter. We just like the same kind of stuff.”

On tough win over Deep Run: “Our coach [Tom Hoy] was telling us that we should be worried about [the match]. But we just put it off. Luckily some of us stepped up and won matches.”

Favorite player:Andre Agassi. I just liked watching him play when I was growing up as a kid.”

Favorite class: “History. I just seem to have an interest for it. In other classes I just get bored.”

Invite any three people to dinner: “Dave Matthews, Andre Agassi and Roger Federer.”

Girls Soccer POW – April 29

Kimmy Cummings
Lee-Davis Confederates

Age:
18    Year:
Senior

Position:
Forward

Performance:
Cummings scored all three Confederate goals in a 3-2 win over Hanover, leading Lee-Davis back into the DigitalSports Top 10 at No. 10.

Best
trait:
“Probably my speed and the way I can deliver the ball and dribble it at my feet.”

Toughest opponent:
“As much as I **** to admit it, probably Atlee. They give us the best run for our money.”

On goal-scoring:
“I can’t take full credit for it. My team has learned how to distribute the ball to me, and get it to me in good positions. Playing year-round helps a lot. Three goals in the Hanover game is something to be proud of.” Cummings has racked up 14 goals, 13 in the past five games.

Invite any
three people to dinner:
“My dad [Robert Cummings], God and Lauren Parker (former softball player at L-D).”

Funniest teammate:
“Besides myself, Virginia Hendrick. She’s hilarious. We’ll be mean to each other but we laugh about it. Put the two of us together and we can get pretty goofy.”

Something you wouldn’t know:
“Involving soccer, I’m probably the hardest critic of myself. As much as I’m a critic of others, I’m harder on myself.”

Favorite athlete:
“I look up to Lance Armstrong a lot. I admire what he’s done.” Cummings and her mother were actually going to run in the Boston Marathon that Armstrong ran in a couple of weeks ago.

On playing for coach Brad Dalton:
“He’s become more like a parent to any of us. We’ve definitely had our ups and downs with him. We both had to kind of adapt and work off of each other’s weaknesses and strengths. It helps in the long run.”

Player coach?:
“The girls that have played with me before, they take my criticism in a good way now. It helps them become better players. They take it really well. The newer players had to adapt to it. I can be bossy on the field, I’ll be the first to admit it. I used to coach younger children, but when I get older I’d like to coach a high school team. In high school, every one puts there whole heart into it. A whole lot better than travel ball.”

Future:
Cummings will play at East Carolina. It wasn’t that way at first. “I committed to go to Ranoke. The day after that, East Carolina had contacted me and said that they saw me play the past weekend and were interested in me. I took the trip down there and loved it.”

Girls Tennis POW – April 29

Elena Rusu, Douglas Freeman Rebels

Height: 5-8                    Age:
17

Position: No. 1 Singles/Doubles     Year: Sophomore

Performance: Rusu is unbeaten this season for the second-ranked and undefeated Rebels. She helped Freeman beat then-No. 2 Deep Run last week with a singles and thrilling doubles win with Elizabeth Sutphin.

Best trait: “Probably my serve and my forehand is much better than my backhand.”

On transfer to Freeman: “I switched schools because I moved. At the beginning it was really strange for me. It’s really hard to move from school to school when you don’t really know people. I knew my Tucker teammates were going to be mad. On the first day of school, one of the first people I saw was coach [Larry] Parpart and he just said, ‘Welcome!’ “

On differences from last season: “The team is different and the
coaches and different and the strategies are different. The practices
are different. For me it is more serious. Our team is more close to
each other. The girls are really close to each other.”

Funniest teammate: “Probably Erin Moore because she laughs a lot and she’s just a freshman. We’re trying to get her more experience. I just love her. She’s one of my best teammates.”

Where she’s from: “Moldova. It’s close to Romania and Ukraine. I was born there and I moved to Italy when I was 14. I lived in Italy for one year and moved to the U.S. with my stepdad and mom.”

Favorite class: “One of my favorite is English and the other is spanish, because I love languages.”

How many languages do you speak: “Right now I speak five languages.”

Toughest opponent: “It’s really hard to tell. Probably my teammate Elizabeth Sutphin, she is my partner.”

Goals: “I was thinking this monrin about my goals. And the biggest goal for me is just beating [Mills Godwin’s] Katie Blow. I played against her two times last year and I lost in three sets the first time and two the last time. So I’m going to try my best today, if we can play.” The top-ranked Eagles are set to host the second-ranked Rebels at 4:30 Tuesday at Three Chopt Recreation Club, weather permitting.
