Atlee Tops Lee-Davis

by Ben Dejarnette (Atlee H.S.)
DigitalSports Student Correspondent

The Atlee boys tennis team wasted no time in sealing the deal against Lee-Davis Thursday.

The Raiders (6-2 Capital, 8-2) won the first five singles matches Wednesday night en route to a 7-2 victory over the Confederates.

Lee-Davis (2-5 Capital, 7-5) did manage to salvage a point from singles in an exciting No. 4 match. After being shut out in the first set, Ryan Henry stormed back to defeat Nicholas Rishcoff 0-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

“I started hitting the ball deeper on him,” Henry said of his second set adjustments. “I hit to his backhand more.”

Henry came close to putting the match away in the final game of the third set, but Rishcoff fired several winners down the stretch to force a tiebreaker. Henry was then able to keep his composure and finish off the win.

“I was really nervous at first but as I progressed and got up 6-3 [in the tiebreaker] I was able to focus more,” Henry said.

For Atlee, No. 1 Shao-Wei Tu led the way with a 6-1, 6-7, 6-0 win over Kyle Russell. No. 2 Eric Smith, No. 3 Jody Cox and No. 5 Jackson Ames each added straight set wins for the Raiders.

In doubles action, Henry helped Lee-Davis earn its second win of the night, teaming up with Nick Peterson for a 9-7 victory over Ames and Chris Mano. The combinations of Tu and Smith and Cox and Rishcoff claimed wins for the Raiders.

The victory for Atlee helped solidify their position as the No. 2 team in the Capital District behind Hanover. Lee-Davis will likely have to beat Henrico to salvage a third-place tie in the district.

No. 1 Eagles Survive

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

In recent years, Mills Godwin boys tennis just has homework, pop quizzes, easy assignments and a few tests during the regular season.

The Eagles, top-ranked in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, got a full-blown exam Friday evening, almost an SAT day, passing with a 6-3 victory over the third-ranked Deep Run Wildcats.

The match had it all.

The Formality

Godwin ran off two quick wins as Kevin Calhoun dispatched of Jake Fratkin 6-0, 6-0. Then Nathan Wood defeated Phillip Mosberg 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) as the Eagles went up 2-0.

Deep Run struck with Glenn Diersen at No. 6 taking down Mike Baxter 6-3, 6-4. Shortly after, Godwin’s Edgar Vitkovski took a freshman battle with Evan Charles 6-0, 7-5 as the Eagles led 3-1 with a chance to end things in singles.

The Upset

Deep Run’s Eric Shulman played the match of his high-school career, topping the no-doubt top player in the area and one of the best in the state of Virginia in Kyle Parker.

Shulman took the first set 6-4, running off the court and high-fiving Deep Run classmates in jubilation. It didn’t last too long as Parker drilled Shulman 6-2 in the second set.

But Deep Run’s senior, in his last regular-season home match, didn’t fold, taking the match with a 6-2 third set and more importantly, pulling Deep Run within one, 3-2, making doubles necessary.

“I know Kyle’s game pretty well,” Shulman said. “I got a strategy before the game. Every match I’ve played him it’s been three sets every time. Unfortunately, I’ve lost all three. But today I came out with the win. I played the third set well.”

Said Deep Run coach Salman Parvaiz: “Eric Shulman has completed an excellent home-match career today. We expect him to continue making Deep Run High School proud in the future.”

The Confusion

Shortly after Shulman completed his victory, Deep Run freshman Hunter Koontz took the second set over Kevin McMillen 6-4 after losing the first 4-6.

McMillen was under the weather and really needed to end the match there, but could not. The senior picked up his equipment and cooler, and left the court leaving nothing behind.

The action by the exhausted McMillen made it look as though he retired, sending Deep Run into a frenzy. But five minutes later, a weary McMillen walked back onto the court, telling Godwin coach Tom Hoy he had not iterated that he retired.

McMillen went on to lead 3-0, but Koontz chipped away at McMillen’s limited energy tank, shifting him side to side before winning 6-4 for a huge 3-3 tie going into doubles.

The Doubles

The thought is that doubles will decide any tough match, and no one is better than Godwin in doubles.

The 2007 state runner-up team in Parker and Calhoun took out Shulman and Diersen 6-2, 6-3 for the Eagles’ fourth point. Then Wood and Baxter triumphed over Fratkin and Mosberg at No. 3 7-6, 6-2 to clinch the match around 8:15 p.m.

Vitkovski and Ajun Karthikeyan beat Koontz and Charles at No. 2 8-6 for the final margin.

“They’ll definitely be a challenger in regionals,” Calhoun said of the Wildcats. [6-3], that’s a good match. We were a little worried.”

Freeman Too Much for Clover Hill

by Chris Naquin
DigitalSports Richmond

Douglas Freeman, ranked ninth in the DigitalSports Top 10 poll, scored three first half goals to defeat tenth ranked Clover Hill 3-0 in Friday night’s game.

The Rebels first goal came off of a long throw that was cleared by the Cavalier defense to the top of the 18 yard box where senior midfielder Semir Selmovic smashed a shot into the side netting putting the Rebels up 1-0.

Later in the game the Rebels were awarded a penalty kick after a shove in the box off of another Freeman long throw.

Senior captain and defender Sean Healy stepped up to take the kick and drilled it home taking a 2-0 lead.

“It was a good win and we played well,” Healy said. “Defensively, we were trying to keep it organized in the back and knock it around a little bit.  I thought we did well tonight.”

Clover Hill did not have many strong scoring opportunities in the first half but their best chance came off of a free kick that was scooped up by Freeman goalkeeper Matt Owen after a loose ball scramble in the box.

With minutes left to play in the half, senior forward Rasid Zulzic dribbled passed the Cavalier defense and fired a shot into the right corner putting the Rebels up 3-0 at the half.

Douglas Freeman continued to apply heavy pressure in the second half creating several dangerous scoring opportunities but could not find the back of the net.

Clover Hill struggled to find their offense and could not create anything offensively as Freeman took the victory.

Monacan Upsets Cosby

The Monacan Chiefs, ranked ninth in the DigitalSports Top 10 Poll, upset No. 1 ranked and undeafeated Cosby 1-0 late in the seventh inning in Thursday night’s game.

The game remained deadlocked through six straight innings due to excellent defense and pitching by both sides.

Monacan pitcher Megan Williams pitched an outstanding game throwing 10 strikeouts and Cosby’s Whitney Haller had nine strikeouts.

The winning run was scored in the seventh inning when second baseman Mandy Hopkins hit an RBI single over first base and down the first baseline putting Monacan up 1-0.

Cosby had one last opportunity to score in the bottom of the seventh but were stopped by Williams who threw strikes when she needed to and forced a couple easy pop outs to take the victory.

The Chiefs delt the Titans their first loss of the season and improve their record to 4-1 in the Dominion District and 7-2 overall.

A First For Deep Run

by Seneca Contomanolis
DigitalSports Richmond

The Deep Run boys tennis team has done what none of their previous teams have done before.

They beat tennis powerhouse Douglas Freeman.

The Wildcats, ranked No. 3 in the DigitalSports Top 10, won five of six singles matches on the way to a 6-3 victory over the second-ranked Rebels on Thursday.

“The Colonial District is tough…,” Deep Run’s Eric Shulman said. “Maggie Walker was a bit of a test for us, not having Hunter [Koontz] in the lineup. Freeman today, they’re one of the best. Never beaten them before. We opened the school in 2002 and we never have beaten them.”

Shulman helped change that for Deep Run (4-0 Colonial, 10-0) by topping Douglas Freeman’s Zach Carl 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

Two players new to the rivalry, freshmen Koontz and Evan Charles, rallied to prevail in their matches.

Both dropped their first set but at No. 2 Koontz came back and beat Thomas Whaling 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 and Charles bested Charles Tilley 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 in the third spot.

Phillip Mosberg and Glenn Diersen won in straight sets at No. 5 and 6, respectively.

Douglas Freeman’s Ben Waschler grabbed the only singles victory for the Rebels (4-1, 11-2) with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Jake Fratkin at No. 4.

“The Deep Run mens tennis team has been working hard to create an environment in which rivalries exist,” Deep Run coach Salman Parvaiz said. “However, they are constructive ones instead of destructive. The athletes are creating an atmosphere in which one can be competitive yet respectful towards their opponents.”

Shulman, a senior headed to play at Christopher Newport next year, teamed up with Diersen to earn the only doubles point for the Wildcats but the outcome of the team match had already been decided by the singles.

“I played well. From the ground I was playing real well,” Shulman said. “I had a lot of key matches last week that helped me prepare for this and all the hard practices we’ve had for the past couple of weeks led me up to this. We’ve been practicing all year to beat this team.”

Now Deep Run will attempt another feat they have never accomplished before.

On Friday, the Wildcats meet top-ranked Mills Godwin in a makeup of a rain out from Tuesday.

“If we win here today we’ve got Godwin for the Colonial District championship tomorrow,” Shulman said. “Should be a test. We’ve never actually won a match against them, lost 9-0 every single time. So, we are looking to pull off an upset there tomorrow.”

Rebels Take Down ‘Cats

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

Deep Run came in and took over the girls tennis landscape in Douglas Freeman‘s case.

Mills Godwin already was the dominant team, then the upstart Wildcats arrived and knocked the Rebels down another notch – until Thursday evening.

That’s when the Rebels, ranked third in the DigitalSports Top 10, upended No. 2 Deep Run 7-2 at Three Chopt Recreation Club to remain unbeaten, moving to 11-0, 5-0 in the tough Colonial District.

“It was really great for our team,” Elizabeth Sutphin, a senior who plays No. 2, said. “I know for the seniors, we’ve played Deep Run (3-2, 6-3) the past three years and lost all of them. It’s really great to beat them now and become No. 2.”

Cabot Hunt finished up first at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Sarah Jennings for the Rebels.

But Alexis Exum, playing up at No. 5 because Deep Run’s No. 1 Allie Shulman did not play, took down Lindsay Teague 6-2, 6-2 to even things up.

The Rebels would take over from there.

Terrific top player, sophomore Elena Rusu, topped Logan Meyer 6-1, 6-3 with an array of powerful groundstrokes and serves.

Sutphin, at No. 2, beat Heather Paxton 6-2, 6-3. Freeman’s No. 6 Carrie Arnold took down Lauren Peters 6-1, 6-2.

The singles match of the evening was at No. 4, where Kelsy Burke outlasted Eva Roffis 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4). The match ended well past any other singles match as the duo traded blows until Burke secured the win for the Rebels.

“The whole team played well,” Rebels coach Larry Parpart said, “and I was happy for our seniors. It’s nice for them to be able to beat Deep Run.”

Well, the Rebels couldn’t beat Exum, the younger sister of Deep Run football and basketball star Antone Exum. She and Peters registered an 8-6 victory to notch Deep Run’s second point at No. 3 doubles, defeating Hunt and Hayley Redmond.

The Burke-Teague combo handled Jennings and Roffis 8-3 at No. 2 for the Rebels.

Then Rusu and Sutphin pulled out a late victory, winning 9-8, 7-5 in the tiebraker, around 8:30 Thursday evening, over Meyer and Paxton.

Things don’t get any easier as the unbeaten Rebels will face a tough E.C. Glass of Lynchburg squad Friday, before tangling with No. 1 Godwin Tuesday back at Three Chopt Recreation Club at 4:30.

“We’ve just gotta go out hard in the beginning,” Teague said, “and just make sure we keep our focus and practice hard this weekend and get ready for the long match.”

Titans Trump Chiefs 4-1

by Chris Naquin
DigitalSports Richmond

Cosby, ranked second in the DigitalSports Top 10, proved once again they are a force to be reckoned with.

The Titans exploded out to a three goal lead in the first half as they went on to defeat visiting No. 5 Monacan 4-1 Thursday.

The first goal of the match was scored by senior forward Ben Jessee who was able to get his head onto the end of Nick DeProspero’s long throw to put Cosby up with nine minutes left to play in the first half.

It did not take the Titans long to tally another goal.

Less than a minute later, senior forward Brian Hughes dribbled past the Monacan defense and delivered a square ball to the top of the six yard box where it found senior midfielder and captain Andrew Mahan who smashed it into the back of the net taking a 2-0 lead.

With under a minute to play in the first half, Hughes delivered another hard cross into the box that was miss cleared by Monacan defender Kyle Butta into his own net to put Cosby up 3-0 at halftime.

“Once we score, we pretty much keep scoring,” Jessee said. “It is what we have done all season.”

Cosby continued to attack the Monacan defense in the second half rattling the post several times with some hard shots.

Cosby’s Chris Nelson scored the fourth goal of the match, putting the Titans up 4-0.

Monacan’s best opportunity came from a free kick that was awarded outside of the Titans box.

Senior forward Hunter Cheatham drilled a low hard shot through Cosby’s wall and through the legs of the goalkeeper putting the Chiefs on the score board with less than a minute to play.

Monacan desperately pushed numbers forward in the final seconds to get another score but the clock ran out as Cosby took the win.
