Johnson, Gordon pace Hermitage

by Stephen M. Lewis

At 1-2, Hermitage went into playoff mode.

In a ridiculously tough Division 6, the Panthers knew the Colonial District title was the only key to get to the playoffs.

Six straight wins later, including Friday night’s pivotal 14-7 victory
over Deep Run, has Hermitage sitting pretty with one contest remaining,
a visit from Patrick Henry.

“In Division 6 you have to win each game,” Hermitage coach Patrick Kane said referring to Hermitage’s playoff mode for the past six weeks. “So that’s nothing different.

“In Division 6 you have to win your district, so we take each game very seriously.”

Serious was Kane’s thought of quarterback Michael Johnson‘s ankle injury. At halftime, he didn’t know how much the senior could go.

He found out how much with the game knotted at 7 with 1:17 remaining.

After Deep Run, ranked second in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, missed a potential game-winning field goal, Johnson’s ankle looked better than new.

He ran 14 yards for a first down. No. 7 Hermitage hurried to the line and Johnson raced 50 yards up the gut as Antone Exum saved a TD – for just one play.

“He’s a fast, strong kid,” Deep Run coach Greg Kendall said of
Johnson, who ran for 125 yards on 18 totes. “He’s a very dynamic
player. He was hard to contain. We did a pretty good job most of the
night. I wish we had gotten him on that last one that got them down
there in field position.”

That’s when Johnson handed off to Easton Gordon (15 carries, 101
yards, two TDs). He bolted around the left end and beat Deep Run to the
pylon, shocking most of the capacity crowd, exciting the rest.

It was an unbelievable development in such a defensive battle.

One of the stars was Hermitage sophomore linebacker Curtis Grant.

The physical phenom racked up 22 tackles helping contain Deep Run’s potent trio of Exum (16 carries, 77 yards, TD), Jordan Love (13 carries, 49 yards) and Dallas Simmons (10 carries, 45 yards).

Hermitage’s running game was bottled up in a similar fashion in a
scoreless first half. Then Gordon busted a 30-yard TD run on
Hermitage’s first possession of the second half.

Stephen Reynolds‘ extra-point made it 7-0. Deep Run responded converting two fourth downs before Exum hit Parker Tuck for 16 yards on third down.

Then Exum scored from four yards out, setting up Cody Harless‘ tying extra point and Johnson and Gordon’s heroics.

Hermitage 0 0 7 7 – 14

Mike Goad – Oct. 31

– Mike Goad is a senior tight end/defensive end for the Matoaca Warriors’
varsity football team. He transferred from Thomas Dale this summer. Goad will
also play basketball this season and is a DigitalSports intern. His blog will
appear here consistently.

My senior homecoming was more than I could ask for. We came out of the gates and defeated Hopewell 42-16 for our third straight win, to put us back at .500 and 4-4 on the season.

The offense scored on our first drive with a great run from homecoming king Josh Edwards. Dustin Clark then connected yet again with wide out DeCarlos Smith twice to make it 21-3.

We then surprised them with an onside kick, got the ball back, and were then able to get another score, followed by another to make it 35-3 going into the locker room. Dustin hit me three times in the first half for 60 yards, and none of us really played much in the second half.

The defense was yet again stout. The front four probably played our best game of the season as we were able to get a lot of pressure on the quarterback, which made it hard for them to do really anything. I was able to get into the defensive rotation early in the first half, and was able to make a few plays along with fellow defensive linemen B.J. Morton, Jaimen Newman, Desmond Smith, and Landon Blizzard, who all played great games, and controlled the line of scrimmage the whole 48 minutes.

This Friday night (Oct. 31) we travel down Route 10 to play Meadowbrook. Simply put, this is our playoffs. This is a huge game for us, and a chance for us to upset a team that a lot of people see as better than us, and a chance for me to play against some old little league teammates such as Morgan Moses, Andre Coble, and Derek Tinsley (he was my center when I played little league quarterback).

Over the past few weeks we have really come together as a team, and if we play like we have been I feel like we can come away with a huge win. I am confident that my coaches will properly prepare us, and I am confident in myself, and my teammates to carry out the duties necessary to win this game. Should be fun.

Defensive POW – Oct. 31

J.J. Saunders,
Highland Springs Springers

Age:
16      Year: Junior

Position: CB/RB

Performance: J.J. Saunders had two interceptions (and dropped two others on breakups) at cornerback in a 41-14 win over Lee-Davis. He also had 157 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

On week: “Just going out there and getting it done. On defense, keep my eyes out of the backfield. On offense, we have a great line. They opened the holes up for me. I had great blocks.”

On big plays: “It all starts with the QB [JaQuan Burchette]. Our new QB stepped up. Other big players like Clarence Hill, Melquan Weston. All of us clicked.”

Best attribute (RB): “My vision. Running fast.”

Best attribute (CB): “I really like hitting, but coverage wise, just playing the ball when its in the air. I like bumping receivers, playing man-to-man.”

What’s your favorite, RB or CB: “My heart is at cornerback, but when I as younger I played a lot of running back. That changed going into my 10th grade year. I fell in love with defense.”

Funniest teammate:Delante Rowe. That’s my brother, everything he says is like I would say the same thing. It’s seems like we have a lot in common.”

Toughest opponent: Teammate Clarence Hill. Big receiver, physical just like me. Hard to get on press coverage.”

On coach Loren Johnson: “I really like coach Johnson. He’s different from coach [Scott] Burton, but in a way they are the same. We have a real cool relationship. Keep it real cool with each other.”

Most complete game?: “I can say that was my most complete game, but I don’t think it’s going to be my best one this season.”

One word to describe him as a football player: “Confident.”

HS takes Capital in five

Highland Springs wasn’t seen as one the biggest threats on the northside of the James River this season.

They are now. The Springers punctuated a regular-season crown with a tournament one, winning the Capital District in a thrilling five-game match over Atlee Wednesday night at Lee-Davis.

The powerful hitting Quentin Moore led Highland Springs with 22 killls, nine digs and four blocks before accepting the district player of the year trophy.

He received many nifty feeds from Addan Jones, the Springers’ terrific setter who delivered 43 assists. Adam Crigger added 12 digs, 11 kills and four blocks on the other side of Moore, as Highland Springs has given Atlee two of its three losses this season.

Kristin Carpenter‘s been floating serves in all season. The Penn State-bound star got word from her future team – let’s work on that jump serve.

Too bad for Atlee, Carpenter unveiled it to the fullest Wednesday night, putting in 10 aces to lead Hanover to the Capital District tournament title 3-0 over Atlee at Lee-Davis.

Carpenter also threw in 18 powerful kills and seven digs in a complete effort.

Katie Hudencial (29 assists, eight digs, two aces, two blocks), Kimberly Browning (six kills, six blocks) and Taylour Hopkins (seven kills, six digs, two blocks) were another trio of seniors that claimed yet another district crown.

The Hawks will host Prince George Monday in the first round of the Central Region tournament, while the Raiders will travel to Central District champion Thomas Dale.

The Raiders were led by terrific freshman Meg Bowers (eight digs, five kills) and Rachael Winfrey (six kills, five digs, two aces).

Girls VBall POW – Oct. 28

Gretchen Wilson, Midlothian Trojans

Year: Senior        Age: 17

Position: OH       Ht: 5-9

Performance: Wilson posted 13 kills, 2 aces, 1 block and 6 digs in an upset of Atlee. Against Clover Hill she had 9 kills, 2 aces, and 5 digs, and added 8 kills, 3 aces, and 13 digs in a victory over Monacan.

On week: “It was our team, we worked really well together and and it seems like that last part of our season we really pulled it together and started upping our game a little bit and started playing to our potential.”

College plans: “I’m planning on playing in college, but I’m not sure exactly where. I’m waiting to see what happens in club season. I  want to major in environmental sciences. I’m basically just seeing what’s offered. I’d be wiling to play D-I, but it just depends on the school and their academics and stuff.”

On coach Mary Allen: “She’s a very good coach. She tends to listen to us and she’s really good with us.”

Toughest opponent: “I think our toughest opponent is probably Cosby. It’s something about them that we never play to our fullest even though we have plenty of chances to beat them.”

Difference in beginning and end of season:
“I think the beginning of the season everyone was expecting us to be good and I think it was pressure and we kind of folded under the pressure. I think now we’ve relaxed and focused more on playing volleyball. I think we’ve come together since then.”

Invite any three people to dinner: “Misty May, I think that would be kind of cool. She’s a great volleyball player. I’d probably like to meet Abraham Lincoln. I think meeting Brad Paisley would be cool.”

Funniest teammate: “It would have to be Taylor Riley. She has got the most personality than anyone that I’ve ever met. She’s crazy. She keeps the whole team pumped up.”

Favorite sports memory: “It’s probably recently, when we played James River last time and took them to five games on our senior night. I think that was the first night that everything started to come together. We played absolutely amazing.”

What makes her standout: “Probably my ability to accept not trying my hardest. I always go for every ball. I don’t accept not succeeding. I just push myself.”

Favorite subject: “Science.” Wilson holds a 3.8 GPA.

Other sports: “No. Volleyball takes up all of my time. If I played any more sports I would probably have to quit school.”

One thing you wouldn’t know: “Well, I really like photography. I’m really quiet but I tend to be really talkative around people that I know.”

Manchester vs. Cosby, 10/28

Cosby, behind Mallory Carter, moves on to the Dominion District final after topping Manchester Tuesday night.

It also gives the Titans the all-important Central Region bid as a No. 2 seed as Cosby will face two-time defending state champ Deep Run in the first round.

Carter registered the 1,000th **** of her career as she inches closer to taking over second place in VHSL history.

Many of those kills have come from Abbie Holt, who delivered 41 assists on the evening.
