Girls soccer, 4/29/09: Atlee tops Godwin in top-five matchup

by Stephen M. Lewis

Atlee girls soccer coach Bruce Lovelace has been waiting for his girls to put together two good halves.

The time came Wednesday evening, as Atlee, ranked fourth in the DigitalSports Top 10, upended No. 1 Mills Godwin 1-0 to give the Eagles their first loss of the season.

The foot of sophomore forward Kimberly Glymph got the job done.

Off a nice lead from freshman forward Ashley Riefner, Glymph turned on the speed and got her left shoulder by a Godwin defender.

Then it was Glymph and Byron one-on-one, with Glymph winning.

“[It] was a through ball right through the defenders. Luckily I wasn’t offsides,” Glymph said. “Cut off my defender and kicked it in right under the goalie.”

It was a beautiful play that turned the tide with 13 minutes to go in the contest.

At that point Godwin had numerous opportunities that didn’t convert.

The Eagles were unlucky sometimes, but Atlee’s defense and keeper Taylor Hoy (six saves) played a terrific match.

“Atlee’s a very good team. Very well organized,” Godwin coach Ali Toole said. “They’re not one dimensional. They worked their tail off all night.”

One particular Raider who needed ice on both calves after the contest was Jordan Roseboro, the University of Miami-bound senior.

It surprised Toole that Roseboro was playing center midfield instead of up top at forward to take advantage of her blazing speed.

But it worked.

Her clever moves and quickness gave Godwin fits and found people open for strong attacks.

“She’s so good technically,” Toole said of Roseboro. “She’s cutting out one or two players. She can strike a ball. That challenges your keeper.”

Another challenge comes Friday at private-school power Collegiate hosts Godwin at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Atlee            1 0 – 1
Mills Godwin 0 0 – 0

Glymph
Saves: Hoy (A) 6; Byron (MG) 13

Baseball, 4/28/09: Dale capitalizes on miscues

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

Thomas Dale plated eight runs in the fifth inning en route to a 10-5 win over Matoaca in baseball Tuesday evening.

The Warriors, ranked third in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, had all kinds of trouble, putting Knight after Knight on base as fourth-ranked Dale took advantage.

Matoaca walked 12 Dale batters and had seven errors, uncharacteristic of Fred Stoots‘ team.

“When you let a good team get base runners they make you pay for it,” Stoots said. “They played well and executed and we didn’t.”

Matoaca outhit Dale 9-5, receiving three RBI from Logan Walker. But the miscues and Bill Cullen‘s seven strikeouts paced Dale to the important Central District triumph, including Brendan Schnell‘s three RBI for the Knights.

“We always try to play hard against Matoaca,” Cullen said. “They’re just our rivals. Ever since day one, my freshman year, we’ve been always trying to beat them for the district title.”

Boys soccer, 4/28/09: TD holds off Matoaca

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

A 0-0 match went to 2-0 in the blink of an eye, as Thomas Dale topped Matoaca Tuesday night in boys soccer.

Matoaca, fresh off a No. 9 ranking in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, gave Thomas Dale all it could handle, with 10 players no less.

Matoaca’s top player, Mason Page, received a red card about 25 minutes into the match. But the Warriors still managed to keep the No. 1 Knights scoreless for a lengthy time period.

A lot of credit has to go to defender and captain Dillon Prendergast, who marked the sensational Will Bates the entire first half, limiting the U.Va.-bound forward’s opportunities.

“I’m really happy with the effort,” Matoaca coach Corey McConville said. “Especially playing 10-men down. The effort’s there … [we need to work on] our one touch and get into more of a rhythm.”

Dale struggled to find its rhythm, but things started to fall in sync once Dale coach Mark Fowler moved Bates to midfield.

It took some defenders out of areas and allowed Dale to strike.

First was Joseph Stover, who converted with 12:30 to go in the match off a beauty of a feed from Jack Bates.

A couple of minutes later, Loudon Phillips barreled down the field and outmuscled a Warrior defender for an easy goal and 2-0 final.

“They wanted to come out here and win tonight,” Stover said. “They were a great side tonight.”

Softball, 4/28/09: Knights get payback

Thomas Dale won its seventh straight game, knocking off Matoaca – the last team to defeat the Knights – 10-1 Tuesday evening in softball.

Sophomore pitcher Lacey Waldrop continued her stellar effort in the circle, striking out 13 batters for TD, ranked fourth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10.

Waldrop carried a no-hitter into the last inning before Erin Chaney broke it up with a single with two outs in the seventh inning for ninth-ranked Matoaca.

Dale got six hits, two from Lauryn Nanny (double, triple), as the Knights took advantage of seven Matoaca errors.

“I came out here knowing that we had lost last time,” Nanny said. “I wanted to come out here and show them that we were a force to be reckoned with.”

Freshman pitcher Melissa Skoff led Matoaca with 10 strikeouts.
