by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

How good is Ka’lia Johnson? Duke good.

Thomas Dale’s rising junior committed to Duke to continue her basketball career this weekend after a lengthy visit.

“It’s a great school academically besides basketball,” Johnson said. “I’m always looking for if I can put this school on a resume’ and get a good job.

“It’s not just basketball, because any school I choose is going to have a good basketball squad.”

The 5-9 point guard averaged 17 points per game on her way to Central District and Central Region player of the year honors.

She’s a two-time all-DigitalSports pick and two-time first-team all-Metro selection.

“It’s been my school since fourth grade,” Johnson said. “It’s my dream school.”

Family Twist

Ka’lia is not the only Johnson with college news.

Her older brother Jay Johnson, a former Dale standout, just signed with Phieffer in North Carolina.

Jay Johnson has spent the past two seasons at Patrick Henry Community College.

The twist? Jay’s first game is at Duke this fall.

“I’ll be there for sure,” Ka’lia said.

Softball, 4/23/09: PG finds way to win

PRINCE GEORGE – Hitting is a task Prince George softball has been trying to lick for the past two seasons.

Despite being outhit 8-3 Thursday evening by Colonial Heights, the Royals squeaked out a 1-0 victory in Central District play.

Timely defense and a stellar pitcher in Lauren Vinson – she had 13 strikeouts – has enabled the Royals to keep winning despite their struggles at the plate.

PG, ranked fifth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, scraped in the game’s only run on textbook softball.

Katie Christopher singled and advanced to second on an error.

“I got two strikes on me and then I hit it to the right side because coach Chandler always tells me to hit that way,” said Christopher, the shortstop. “I just tried to make him happy and hit the ball that way.”

Then Jami Davis sacrificed the pinch runner, Ashley Richeson, to third, who later scored on a passed ball for the game’s only run, as Colonial Heights hurler Savannah Phillingane cruised in the circle.

Colonial Heights had the bases loaded in the sixth inning as a ball got away from Vinson, but it bounced right back to catcher Ashley Lowe, ending up in an out for Colonial Heights.

“A lot of times when you have that one little mistake that’s the one thing that will take just enough out of your sails,” Colonial Heights coach Toni Martin said. “I’ve never seen a ball bounce over a 20-foot backstop.”

Prince George has seen their hitting struggles continue, but coach Pat Waguespack hopes his girls will start to put the bat on the ball at the right moment.

“We’re still looking for the peak,” said Waguespack, whose team gets a break after falling to Thomas Dale in eight innings the night before. “And hopefully that will be toward the end of the season.”

Colonial Heights 000 000 0 – 0 8 2

Girls Tennis, 4/24/09: Eagles prove ranking

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

Read how Nicole Parker and Meg Kristofak destroy every cliche’ that may be in play for this year’s Mills Godwin tennis team.

Former No. 1 Katie Blow is at Virginia Tech.

Parker, the new No. 1: “Everyone asks me how am I going to fill Katie’s shoes? I don’t have to fill her shoes. I mean … I have my own (giggles).”

How will everyone adjust to their new playing positions?

Kristofak, at No. 2: “A point is a point. It doesn’t matter where you are in the lineup.”

There are too many new players for you guys to be as good as previous years. Too many freshmen.

Kristofak: “We lost a lot. But [the team] is better in different ways. The freshmen were really willing to step up.”

There’s no way to deny those answers, as Godwin, ranked No. 1 in the DigitalSports Top 10, beat No. 2 Deep Run 8-1 Friday afternoon.

By 5 p.m., all but one of the singles matches were complete. The match began a little after 4 p.m.

It was an impressive performance, started by No. 1 Parker, who took down Deep Run’s Logan Meyer 6-3, 6-1.

Kristofak beat Ashley Price 6-1, 6-2 and the Eagles were off to the races.

Mary Frances Dudley (No. 3) won 6-1, 7-5, Michelle Akerman (No. 4) 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 and Jessica Kocen (No. 5) 6-2, 6-3 as the doubles wouldn’t change the outcome, though Deep Run No. 6 Sarah Jennings gave the Eagles their only blemish, winning 6-3, 6-3.

Deep Run is playing the season without would-be No. 1 Allie Shulman (decided not to play), and was without the injured Alexis Exum Friday, but Godwin is just too good regardless, once again.

“I think our team,” said Kristofak confidently, “is just as good as it was last year.”

Scores – Thursday, April 23

Baseball
No. 8 Thomas Dale 12, Meadowbrook 0

* Freshman Gabriel Togna hurled a five-inning no-hitter with
five strikeouts, making it 10 straight innings of no-hit ball for the
JV call-up.

He’s 3-0. That’s not all for Dale.

The Knights also had sensational junior Bill Cullen hit for the
cycle in the same game, in four at-bats no less.

First came the single,
then the home run, the double and the triple. He also had seven RBI.

“A no-no by itself is rare enough,” Dale coach Chris Marshall said, “But both of those happening on the same night is against all odds.”

Basketball, 4/22: Travis McKie to Wake Forest

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

Travis McKie‘s recruitment is over. Wake Forest nabbed the John Marshall star’s commitment Wednesday.

The 6-7, 195 pound forward chose Wake over a slew of big-time programs.

“They made me a priority,” McKie said. “They made me feel like I was their guy from day one. They used all of the seven visits allowed to a player, five of them were from the head coach. They’ve always been straight up and honest with me.”

Ironically, Wake put the full-court press on the Richmonder four years after losing out on L.C. Bird’s Tyrese Rice, who went on to star at Boston College and is a sure NBA draft pick in June.

McKie is ranked in or near the top 50 in the class of 2010 by most or all of the recruiting sites.

He garnered offers from Clemson, Virginia, VCU, Virginia Tech, Alabama and Georgia Tech, among others.

He received heavy interest from North Carolina, but no offer from the national champion that will be led by fellow Richmonder Ed Davis next season, a Benedictine product.

“When you want something and you realize where you want to go, you
shouldn’t contemplate on it,” McKie said. “I felt loved and I felt wanted. I can go
there and achieve all my goals.

“I’m not going to say I can go there and take over. I can come in and make an impact. I think I can come in and gel with the guys that’s already there. I can do a lot of special things there.”

Tyree Evans
(Kent State), Tyrese Rice, Davis, now McKie. It looks like Henrico’s Trey Davis is next, a rising junior with offers already in hand from Richmond, VCU and Virginia.

“Richmond has become a hot place,” McKie said. “I can’t tell you when it happened, but it happened. It’s just going to continue to go on and on.

“To be honest, I just played basketball. You don’t really think about this stuff when you are a kid. Just a few years ago, I was an eighth grader playing JV, now I’m an ACC commit.”

Boys Tennis, 4/22/09: Wildcats’ turn

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com
(804) 240-2191

The baton has been passed … until the next meeting anyway.

After years of playing second fiddle to Mills Godwin, Deep Run‘s boys tennis team toppled the tennis giant 5-4 Wednesday night, completing the win at about 8:15 p.m.

The heroes? Glenn Diersen and Stephan Hinds.

The duo combined for three important points, with two singles wins and the all-important doubles triumph 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) over Mike Baxter and Zach King.

“Singles went well, I’ve been playing pretty well,” said Hinds, a much-improved sophomore up from the seventh spot on the team last season. “In doubles, we had to pull out from a whole, but we still won.”

The four-hour battle between the top two teams in the DigitalSports Top 10, and perhaps in the state, was tight throughout.

Four singles matches went to three sets, with Deep Run taking three of them courtesy Evan Charles at No. 2, Diersen at No. 3 and Jake Fratkin at No. 6.

Godwin’s singles wins came from top player Kyle Parker, who overcame a five-game deficit in the second set and beat Hunter Koontz 6-2, 7-5, and Zach King, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Phillip Mosberg that allowed Godwin’s outstanding doubles teams to take the stage.

But Diersen and Hinds were up to the challenge.

“We made our goal to beat Godwin before they lost their top two players,” Koontz said. “And we accomplished that goal.”

Said Deep Run coach Salman Parvaiz: “This is a defining moment for us. When a moment like this comes around, you either define it by stepping up or you let the moment define you.”

Definition of this win? Maybe two more matches just as good.
