Track & Field, 5/27/10: Dale, Atlee triumph

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

Thomas Dale’s girls and Atlee’s boys took the Central Region outdoor track and field titles by wide margins Thursday at Sports Backers Stadium.

The girls competition was won by the depth of the Knights, who had only two event winners, Kortney Williams (shot put) and April Wilson (400).

But Dale got points in nine of the 17 events to pull away, racking up 75 points, 55 without Williams and Wilson’s wins.

Sarah Fulgham and Katea Jemmott tore it up in jumps and sprints, and Kristen Greene doubled up on fourth-place finishes in the throws.

Second was Patrick Henry, led by Lizzie Powell, who beat her own meet record of 12-1 with a vault of 12-3, though she wanted to go 12-9.

“I had just finished running in the 4X100 relay,” said Powell, who ran a terrific second leg on the third-place team. “So my legs are a little worn out from that.”

The Patriots nipped fellow Colonial District member Deep Run 51.5 to 51, but it was Dale’s day, its first girls region track title.

On the boys side, Atlee claimed its second region crown in the school’s 19-year history. It wasn’t close, either.

The Raiders posted 79 points, 20 over Dale and Quintin Fulgham, the long, triple jump, 100 and 200 champion.

Atlee got it done it’s the usual way with terrific depth, and domination in the pole vault. The Raiders put up 19 points in the event alone to offset Fulgham’s unbelievable individual performance.

The senior had Dale up one point with a few events to go, but the Raiders’ depth was too much.

Atlee got wins from its 3,200-meter relay team and Marques Atkinson in the 300 hurdles.

Highland Springs finished third with 51 points, Cosby a close fourth with 50.5.

Softball, 5/26/10: Tucker 2, Hermitage 1

Kaitlyn Cheek didn’t let her second opportunity go.

In the fourth inning, J.R. Tucker’s star hitter struck out on three pitches with a runner on base.

In the top of the sixth inning, the same opportunity presented itself.

“I had just been feeling good all day,” Cheek said. “[Taylor Francisco] got two balls on me and I knew she had to come in to me with a hard pitch. I guessed inside and she gave it to me, so I took advantage.”

The bomb over the left-field fence gave the Tigers a 2-1 victory over Hermitage in the Colonial District softball final Wednesday at RF&P Park.

Tucker’s win earned not only the district trophy, but a date in the Central Region quarterfinals at Lee-Davis, a tall feat for a No. 4 seed.

The Tigers stopped top-seeded Patrick Henry 2-1 in 10 innings a day earlier, and halted the red-hot Panthers to move forward.

Kai-elle Steinruck paced Hermitage, going 2 for 3 with a double, while Francisco struck out six batters.

Haley Harris threw a 3-hitter with no earned runs, and also had two of Tucker’s four hits.

“It took a lot of us,” Harris said. “At the beginning we had some trouble. But then we just came together, had a talk and all came out ready to go.”

J.R. Tucker 000 002 0 – 2 4 3

Boys soccer, 5/25/10: Matoaca 5, MBK 1

Call Mason Page Lightning.

He struck twice in 45 seconds to catapult Matoaca to a 5-1 boys soccer victory over Meadowbrook in the Central District semifinals Tuesday.

“They definitely were in control of the game at the beginning of the game,” Warriors coach Corey McConville said. “Once we got those two goals we were able to get them on their heels.

“But again, it was a battle in the second half.”

Meadowbrook coach Justin Beck, out of ideas to halt Page, flat out double-teamed the ODU-bound forward in the second half.

It stopped Matoaca’s momentum until Nathan Calhoun found Ryan Clapman on a free kick for a 3-0 lead halfway through the second half.

“I just got that ball over the top and knew I was going to volley it over the keeper,” Clapman said.

Meadowbrook, ever resilient, converted a corner kick with 12 minutes to go.

Noe’ Quintanilla wasn’t stood up in the box by Matoaca, and beat Spencer Koch as the Monarchs’ crowd had life.

But Page got back at it in the open field.

He blasted a shot at MBK keeper Diego Velasco, who got one of his six saves, but it bounced out to Brandon Parker, who smartly followed Page’s shot.

Page wouldn’t miss with four minutes left. The ball seemed to be heading out of bounds behind the net, but Page saved it and maneuvered through three Monarchs to deposit his third goal.

“All I can say is, look out at regionals,” Beck said of Page. “This guy is a phenomenal player. He really can decide what’s going to happen in the game in any moment.

“If he’s up and he’s playing at the top of his game, he’s going to be one of the toughest people to mark.”

Meadowbrook 0 1 – 1
Matoaca         2 3 – 5
MBK: Quintanilla
Mat: Page 3, Clapman, Parker
Saves: Velasco (MBK) 6; Koch (Mat) 3

Girls soccer, 5/25/10: Godwin survives

by Chip Carter
Mills Godwin Correspondent

Facing a win or pack-up-the-equipment situation, Mills Godwin’s “drama queens” made a season-saving return engagement Tuesday night as the Eagles defeated Douglas Freeman on penalty kicks in the semifinals of the Colonial District tournament.

Dubbed ‘drama queens” last year for their penchant for late-game heroics on the way to the state finals, Godwin needed a stoppage time header by senior Marie Krider off sophomore Alayna Vaughan‘s free kick to tie the Rebels and force overtime.

“Alayna got it in a good spot for me,” Krider said. “The ref said there was about 15 seconds left.”

To that point, Freeman’s midfield, led by senior Annie Hazelgrove, had held fast and the defense had blanketed Godwin’s forwards and outside midfielders, allowing few effective shots and not allowing Godwin’s first corner kick until deep into the second half.

On those Godwin shots that were more dangerous, sophomore keeper Alex Claggett was equal to the task, saving at least two shots that looked like sure goals.

Claggett finished with seven saves in regulation and overtime.

A week and a half ago, Godwin dominated possession in route to a 2-0 win over the Rebels. But this night, improved midfield play and dangerous counterattacks featuring freshman striker Liz Ahrens gave the Rebels consistent scoring opportunities.

The speedy and skilled Ahrens cashed in on a long ball from her back line as she gathered it on the right side of the 18, bumped the defender, and deposited a shot over Godwin sophomore keeper Jessie Ashworth for a 1-0 Rebel lead at the 32:00 mark.

Asked what the difference was in the two recent games, Godwin assistant coach Miranda Watson answered, “Freeman was simply great. They played better, fought harder, possessed it better [than in the first game]. They made it very difficult for us.”

Watson changed her formation with about 15 minutes to go, removing a defender and adding a midfielder. The Eagles began to make more offensive headway but could not hit the net until Vaughan and Krider’s clutch connection.

Four five-minute overtime and sudden death periods produced gasp inducing shots and saves on both ends. Godwin had the better of the possession, but Freeman had two potentially game-ending chances with balls near the net that were turned away.

After 100 minutes of play, the spent teams headed to penalty kicks for a decision.

The PK session was tied 3-3 after four shots from each team when Godwin’s Ashworth came up with her second save.

“PK’s are my favorite thing ever,” said Ashworth.

Godwin junior midfielder Lauren Abraham then had the game on her foot and deposited the game-winning kick.

“As I was walking up, our seniors’ faces flashed in my mind and I had no doubt. I wanted it for them and knew I was going to make it,” said Abraham.

Freeman finished the season 10-5-1.

“This was hard to lose,” Freeman coach Kent Dohrman said, “but I’m so proud of my team.”

Rebel captain Hazelgrove echoed her coach’s sentiments.

“It was an evenly played game. Both teams showed great leadership and great heart. It just came down to a shot.”

Godwin advances to Thursday’s championship game against No. 1 seed Deep Run at 5:30 at Hermitage.

Deep Run advanced with a 4-3 win over Patrick Henry Tuesday. Regardless of the outcome, both teams will advance to the Central Region tournament.

The Central Region boys singles quarterfinals went without many fireworks.

Two competitors advanced without dropping a game.

Deep Run’s Hunter Koontz beat Matoaca’s hard-hitting Steve Bond, and Douglas Freeman’s Zach Carl ousted Thomas Dale’s Austin Hamilton.

Cosby freshman Brett Moorehead didn’t have much trouble, either, dispatching Henrico’s Arjun Venkatasubramanian 6-1, 6-0.

Moorehead’s teammate, Tyler Carey, had a tough first set with Henrico’s Matt Zimmerman, winning 6-4.

But Carey stopped the demonstrative sophomore 6-1 to clinch a semifinal berth.

Michael Robinson Camp, 5/22/10

(804) 240-2191

The favorite son returned with friends and free tutelage.

Over 500 football youths took part in Michael Robinson‘s 1st Excel 2 Excellence Football Camp Saturday at Varina High School.

Robinson was an all-everything player at the school before going on to star at Penn State, and now is a running back and special teams dynamo for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers.

Robinson, about to enter his fifth season in the league, was noticeably excited about the turnout.

“It kind of feels like it’s 2000,” Robinson said, “and we’ve won another region championship.”

Exactly 509 players participated in the camp from ages 10 to a rising high-school senior.

Philadelphia Eagle and former Highland Springs and Virginia Tech star Macho Harris took part in the camp, as well as Robinson’s 49er teammates Josh Morgan and Manny Lawson.

Elite coaches in the Richmond area also provided tips for the students, like Highland Springs coach Loren Johnson, Varina’s Stu Brown, Meadowbrook’s Troy Taylor, former Huguenot coach Richard McFee, Hanover’s Josh Just and many others.

“We’re just here basically trying to give back to the kids,” Harris said. “We were in their shoes back in the day. Just to give return to them, I know it means the world to them, and it means the world to us to be out here.”

Girls region tennis, 5/20: Godwin 5, Atlee 1

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

It’s getting ridiculous.

Mills Godwin’s girls tennis team captured its 11th straight Central Region title Thursday afternoon, dispatching of Atlee 5-1 at Cosby High School.

The Eagles have won 71 straight matches. Three more will get them an unprecedented fourth consecutive state Group AAA crowns.

The numbers are mind-boggling.

“We’re trying to make history,” Eagles coach Mark Seidenberg said. “Nobody has ever won four straight in AAA. We’d like to be the first school to ever do that.”

No one who has seen this team would put it past them, as the Eagles gave Atlee its first loss of the season in a well-played championship.

At No. 1, freshman phenom Kelly Stewart continued her stellar play, beating powerful hitting, George Mason-bound Yasmin Fotovat 7-5, 6-2.

Nicole Parker, headed to Longwood after this season, dropped Shao-Ching Tu 6-4, 6-2, as both traded many long, entertaining points.

Another Godwin senior, Meg Kristofak, was the first to get off of the hot courts, topping Chirstina Shifflett 6-1, 6-1. Maddie Wood had more trouble with a pesky, consistent-hitting Madeline Wills, winning 6-3, 6-3.

Haley Moses won at No. 5 for the Eagles, 6-2, 6-1 over Shannon Heard.

At No. 6 is where Atlee got a mark, as Katharine Leitch stopped talented freshman Abigail Randolph, 6-4, 6-0.

“I think they gave their best shot,” Raiders coach Duke Price said of his Atlee squad. “They were down in most of the matches but they played their best. That’s all you can ask for.”

Both teams will play in the state Group AAA tournament, Tuesday, June 1 against Eastern Region opponents, Atlee the champ, Godwin the runner-up.

Girls soccer, 5/18/10: #5 Godwin 5, P. Henry 0

by Chip Carter
Mills Godwin Correspondent

Mills Godwin, ranked fifth in the most recent Digital Sports rankings, scored early in each half on its way to an easy 5-0 Colonial District win over Patrick Henry Tuesday night.

Senior forward Marie Krider opened the scoring only a minute and a half into the game as she outraced the defense to a long ball, dribbled ahead, and pushed it past PH keeper sophomore Alex Graf for a quick 1-0 lead.

Four minutes later, at the 34:00 mark, senior outside midfielder Becca Haislip drove the ball down the right side and angled to the middle. Her shot was deflected by Graf, but junior forward Sarah Bellotti was on the opposite side for an easy tap in for the 2-0 lead.

Godwin (4-1 Colonial, 9-4-1) had several other chances in the first half, but Graf, who finished with 13 saves, turned them away.

Ninth-ranked PH (2-4, 9-6-1) created a few early dangerous situations through the skilled play of senior forward Ginny Gills. At the 37:00 mark, Gills got ahead of the Godwin defense and looked to score, but Godwin’s junior defender Anna Boyce sped back and disrupted Gills from getting off a shot.

That was the Patriots most serious threat in the game as Godwin keepers were credited with only three saves.

The second half saw Godwin strike in the first minute as Haislip fed Krider a pass in front of an open net for an easy score and a 3-0 lead.

The ball stayed in the Godwin offensive zone and Godwin assistant coach Miranda Watson substituted liberally, resting many of her regulars.

“One of our goals was to get early multiple goals,” Watson said. “Their keeper made some nice plays, but it was nice to rest some of the girls and give some others more minutes,” said Watson.

Haislip pushed the lead to 4-0 at 24:00 as she settled a ball at the top of the 18 and shot past an outstretched Graf.

Sophomore Alayna Vaughan finished the scoring with about nine minutes to go as her corner kick bent untouched into the upper ninety of the goal for the 5-0 final.

“I was surprised. It went a little farther than I wanted it and I didn’t realize it went in at first,” Vaughan said. “I’ve spent some weekends here with my dad working on them.”

The last five minutes saw Godwin replace regular goal keeper, sophomore Jessie Ashworth, with Haislip.

Haislip recorded a save late and finished with the soccer equivalent of hitting for the cycle – one goal, one assist and one save for the game.

Godwin finishes Colonial District play Thursday as they host Hermitage.
