Mills Godwin ended Henrico’s unbeaten run, stopping the Warriors 5-0 Tuesday afternoon in the Central Region boys tennis quarterfinals.

Henrico, the Capital District champion, had run off 16 straight wins before bowing to the region power from the Colonial District.

The Eagles got wins from Zack King at No. 3, Michael Holt at four, Anthony Palesis at five and Ajay Sundar at six in singles.

While Henrico’s top two, Arjun Venkatasubramanian and Matt Zimmerman, forced a third set with second set wins in their singles matches with Edgar Vitkovski and Arjun Karthikeyan, the Eagles finished the Warriors.

Palesis and Alex Yachanin had no trouble with Taylor and Kabir Sodhi, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Venkat and Zimmerman were disappointed the match ended without their matches finishing, desperately wanting to put points on the board for the up-and-coming, youthful squad.

“We were a little worried down the ladder because we really didn’t know what they had,” King said. “We were glad we came out and took care of those matches.”

Girls soccer, 5/14/10: #5 Godwin 2, #7 Freeman 0

by Chip Carter
Mills Godwin Correspondent

Mills Godwin used goals off corner kicks in each half to come away with a 2-0 win over Douglas Freeman in an important Colonial District contest Friday night between DigitalSports Top 10 teams.

Godwin, No. 5 in the most recent Digital Sports rankings and celebrating Senior Night, had the advantage in both possession and dangerous attacks throughout.

Deft passing and nice crosses produced several first-half chances, but no early goals for the Eagles. Freeman sophomore keeper Alex Clagett produced tough saves, deflecting shots by Eagle forwards senior Marie Krider and junior Sarah Bellotti on well-timed charges out of the goal, and other Eagle shots went high or wide.

Freeman, ranked No. 7 by Digital Sports, got off only two shots in the first half, the more dangerous from senior forward Julia Wingfield at the 12:00 mark.

As Godwin defenders sandwiched Rebel freshman forward Liz Ahrens, the ball squirted out to Wingfield on the right. She quickly gathered the ball and shot, but sent the ball over the goal.

Godwin got on the board at the 8:40 mark of the first half when junior midfielder Ellen Upton headed in senior Kelsey Carter‘s corner kick for a 1-0 lead.

The last threat for either team in the first half came at 3:46 as Krider slipped a soft pass ahead to junior Jessica Atar who misfired high.

Halftime saw Godwin’s underclassmen reminded of Senior Night.

“[Junior midfielder] Lauren Abraham was telling all of them at halftime, ‘Win for our seniors!’,” said senior Becca Haislip. “There was a lot of enthusiasm.”

The second half saw Godwin increase its possession advantage. Scoring threats became more numerous and Clagett was busy, making six saves in the half.

Clagett charged out three times to deflect shots by Krider and Bellotti, and both Bellotti and Abraham misfired on shots Claggett could not reach.

At the 21:20 mark Godwin junior Alayna Vaughan continued her impressive placement on corner kicks, putting the ball about six yards from the box where Carter headed it in for a 2-0 lead.

The Rebels, who relied on long counter attacks, could not mount much sustained offense as Godwin defenders senior Emily Ornelas and junior Anna Boyce shadowed the impressive Ahrens.

Freeman senior Caitlin Rivas got her head on a corner kick at the 22:50 mark but sent it high. That was the last real Rebel threat until stoppage time when Ahrens finally broke free and fired a shot into the crossbar.

Ten seconds later the game ended.

“It was a game no one wanted to lose – it’s an important district game, we’re playing our rival, and it’s Senior Night,” said Carter.

The Eagles’ improved play coincides with improved health as Carter and Abraham have returned from injury, moving players back to their most effective positions.

“Our team is playing well now. Since we’ve gotten healthier, we’re definitely playing better as a team,” said Haislip.

With the win Godwin moved to 3-1 in the district and 8-4-1 overall.  Freeman fell to 2-2 and 8-3-1.

Both the Eagles and the Rebels finish district play this week before beginning the Colonial District tournament May 24.

Baseball, 5/14/10: Henkel’s 10-day special

by Stephen M. Lewis

Not many are lucky enough to throw one perfect game in high school, college or professional baseball. Don’t even think about doing it twice.

Campbell Henkel must have a leprechaun in his pocket, or he eats a lot of Lucky Charms in the morning.

Nope, Henkel’s just plain good, and so are the St. Christopher’s Saints.

Henkel threw a perfect game in a 3-0 victory over Benedictine, registering 11 strikeouts.

Just 10 days later, the left-handed senior no-hit Liberty Christian in the VISAA state quarterfinals.

“Seeing either one is a very special treat,” Saints coach Tony Szymendera said. “I think what makes both of these so special is a combination of the opponents we’ve played, the importance of the games and the settings.

“These are not games against people in the bottom of the standings.”

Neither are the 22-3 Saints, who will face Paul VI in Friday’s state semifinals at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights.

Henkel, headed to VMI, has been the catalyst.

The 6-3 lefty is 9-0 with 104 strikeouts (school record) with a tiny 1.19 ERA. He’s nasty at the plate as well, with a .444 batting average and 26 RBI.

He’s the school’s career leader in homers (19), doubles (32), RBI (87) and wins (21).

Henkel isn’t the only Saint that’s having a standout season.

Kurt Fleming has added muscle to his already powerful frame and may be drafted by the MLB in June. Casey Fox has also been a standout.

“I’ve got to give a lot of credit to the guys playing behind me,” Henkel said. “It was a phenomenal game. Not just for me, but for the team in general.”

St. Christopher’s faithful hope the Saints and Henkel can put together a few more phenomenal games to bring home the state hardware.

Softball, 5/11/10: #2 Dale 1, #1 PG 0

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

(804) 240-2191

Coming into Tuesday’s monumental matchup with Prince George, Lacey Waldrop averaged 16 strikeouts per game.

But the talented junior only had seven strikeouts in a 4-0 loss to the Royals in the first matchup.

Boy did she make up for it.

The Florida State-bound pitcher racked up 23 whiffs in Dale’s 27 outs, as the Knights knotted up the Central District race with a 1-0 win over PG in nine innings, the Royals’ first loss of the season.

“Last game I didn’t have my best pitching,” Waldrop said. “I had a pitching lesson on this past Sunday to tune up everything and it seemed to work really, really well.”

Waldrop thoroughly dominated, with power and location, only surrendering three hits, two to Prince George’s terrific hurler, Lauren Vinson, another in the sixth to Ginny Miller.

Both reached second base on stolen bases but were left on the base paths.

PG’s Vinson turned in a sterling performance as well, with 12 strikeouts scattering four hits.

Runners reached third base twice on Vinson (Ashby Bryant – fourth inning, error & Logan Tollison – sixth, triple), but PG shut down both opportunities.

Then came the ninth inning.

With the game tied, the international rule went into affect, putting a runner on second base to start the inning. Dale executed, PG didn’t.

The Royals, ranked first in the DigitalSports Top 10 all year, couldn’t lay down a bunt and were unsuccessful in scoring their runner.

Bryant put down a nice bunt to move Waldrop to third in the bottom of the ninth for second-ranked Dale.

Next up was Kelci Simonsen, who wasn’t afraid to share Waldrop’s bright spotlight, pushing a Vinson pitch between shortstop and third to score Waldrop without a throw.

“I was completely relaxed,” said Simonsen. “I don’t get into pressure a lot.”

Though pressure games are left in the Central District, it is probable the two teams will meet again on the Saturday after the regular-season ends for the district title and the all-important automatic Central Region bid that goes with it.

“It’s tough,” Prince George coach Pat Waguespack said. “We just don’t see pitching like that often. When she’s throwing smoke … “

Girls soccer, 5/11/10: #5 Godwin 2, MWGS 0

by Chip Carter
Mills Godwin Correspondent

Mills Godwin dominated Maggie Walker GS everywhere but the scoreboard in its Colonial District girls soccer match Tuesday night.

The Eagles settled for a 2-0 victory but dominated possession in both halves, creating scoring chances over and over.

The first half saw Godwin test Maggie Walker keeper Cheta Emba repeatedly. Emba finished the game with 18 saves, with 11 of them coming in the opening half.

When Emba didn’t save shots, Godwin misfired, sending balls into and over the crossbar or just wide on promising attacks. Godwin senior midfielder Becca Haislip, playing ill, was impressive in the first half as she often beat Green Dragon defenders one on one and fed teammates for several opportunities near the net.

Maggie Walker, on the other hand, could manage only a single shot in each half. Godwin sophomore keeper Jessie Ashworth made just two relatively simple saves during the game.

The second half featured much of the same, but the Eagles finally found the net.

Godwin’s first goal came as junior forward Sarah Bellotti settled a nice cross from Haislip and punched it past Emba for the 1-0 lead. The Eagles finished the scoring at the 8:00 mark as senior defender Emily Ornelas knocked in a shot off senior Marie Krider‘s corner kick.

“It was only my second goal in four years. The team’s been teasing me because I usually hit corner kicks with every part of my body except my foot or head,” Ornelas said. “It was nice to score because it was my brother’s 20th birthday, and my aunt is here visiting from Oklahoma.”

Godwin assistant coach Miranda Watson was quick to credit the Dragons’ Emba.

“She did a phenomenal job in the net. She had some really big saves and made it difficult for us to score. It was not our best performance, but we got the job done,” said Watson.

Godwin returns to action Wednesday night in a non-district game with James River.
