Softball, 5/7/10: #4 PH 4, #3 Deep Run 3

Patrick Henry’s unbeaten Colonial District softball campaign ran into difficulty, but the streak continued as the Patriots knocked off homestanding Deep Run 4-3 Friday night.

The Patriots erased a 2-0 deficit, then broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh inning thanks to designated player Katie Woody.

Deep Run walked Madison Gilman and Sam Moore (3 for 3) because of their dangerous bats and to get a force out at each plate.

Alley West had singled earlier and was already on base.

“I was just really nervous,” Woody said. “But I went up there looking for a certain pitch and that’s what I got.”

Woody took Brooke Blankenship‘s pitch right up the middle, scoring West for the winning run.

A tremendous throw from center from Deep Run’s Kelly Foate to Elizabeth Herrman caught Gilman at the plate, but PH pitcher Emma Mitchell shut the Wildcats down in the bottom of the frame.

Mitchell, a sophomore, had nine strikeouts on the night as PH moved to 10-0 in the district, 14-1 overall, its only loss to Hanover rival Lee-Davis.

“We’re off to a really good start,” PH coach Matt Crowder said. “You can’t ask for a better group of kids. They are all dedicated. They work hard.

“We’re just hoping to have some momentum here going into district play and hopefully into the region.”

Boys tennis, 5/6/10: Henrico history

by Stephen M. Lewis

Not long ago, Henrico didn’t have a plentiful boys tennis team.

Maybe seven or eight players were on the roster, many first-year or novice players.

Now the Warriors are Capital District champions and the first tennis team in school history to finish the season unbeaten after stopping Lee-Davis 8-1 Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors boast a hefty 16-0 record before heading into the Central Region tournament.

“This has been a magical season for us,” said Joe Allred, Henrico’s coach and a 12th grade English teacher at the school.

Who knew the Warriors would roll without a blemish in the loss column, especially after a tight win over Atlee in the season-opener.

“We started off with a tough match against Atlee, barely clinching 5-4,” Henrico’s top player Arjun Venkatasubramanian said, more on him later. “After that, I told the team, just looking at our schedule, it’s a long shot, but if we work as a team and build as a team we can do it.

“Clinching today, it’s just a great feeling.”

Venkatasubramanian, one of many players on Henrico’s roster of Indian descent, came on the scene as a sophomore, losing a tight match to the region’s best player in 2009, Mills Godwin’s Kyle Parker, now at the College of Charleston.

The junior’s continued his improvement, dropping only one match this season, to Atlee’s Shaowei Tu. In fact, Henrico’s whole top six has lost one singles match the entire season.

Venkat, as Arjun is called for short, is not the only powerful weapon in Henrico’s holster. Sophomore Matt Zimmerman is a strong player on the off-season circuit, and plays No. 2 for the Warriors.

He doesn’t lack for confidence, and the Warriors could be even better next season.

Venkat’s brother, Sham, is an eighth grader and the top player in the state at his age. Jake Weber is another promising player that may crack the top six in 2011.

“Next year will be the year we go to states if we can pull it together,” Zimmerman said.

Not so fast.

“Rumor is we have some good players coming in,” said Allred, who will lose only one senior regular. “I’ll feel better when I see them here on the court. We should be pretty good this year, but you can’t discount the other teams.”

And you can no longer discount the Henrico Warriors.

Baseball, 5/5/10: #4 Hanover 7, #5 Freeman 4

(804) 240-2191

After both teams blew chances at big innings, Hanover finally cashed in with a five-run sixth, dispatching of visiting Douglas Freeman 7-4 Wednesday night in a top-five matchup.

Hanover, ranked fourth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, and No. 5 Douglas Freeman both had base running blunders that squelched possible runs.

But the Hawks took flight in the sixth, almost as well as Jared Lipscombe did individually. He went 3 for 4 on the day with a double and two RBI.

Those runs tied the game at 4.

Bryant Lowery then knocked Lipscombe in from second on a single as Hanover took its first lead.

“I was hunting what pitch I was going to get. I was looking in the book and knew what was coming,” Lipscombe said. “When I got it I was ready for it.

“They’re right up there with Godwin, who kind of handed it to us. It was a big win for us.”

Softball, 5/5/10: Hanover 2, Freeman 1

On a young team, you need a senior to provide leadership.

Marybeth Sciolino did that, delivering a game-winning single Wednesday night as Hanover held off Douglas Freeman 2-1 in softball.

The Hawks trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh on a fifth-inning RBI by Ellie Amarante.

Erin Scarborough doubled and scored later on a a Freeman error in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Then Sciolino got a chance to knock in sophomore Erica Barrett in the eighth, and ripped it up the middle.

“My heart was kind of pounding. I’m not going to lie,” Sciolino said. “I choked up on the bat a little bit … I turned my hips and it ended up in the outfield.”

Girls Soccer, 5/6/10: #2 Atlee 1, #3 Godwin 0

by Chip Carter
Mills Godwin Correspondent

Atlee senior Brittany Hill employed almost every technique available to a goal keeper Thursday night in the Raiders 1-0 win over Mills Godwin.

Under constant pressure from the Eagles, Hill came up big time after time.

She charged, she dove, she deflected for nine saves – and whatever she did worked as Godwin never found the net.

The first half was played mostly in the Godwin offensive zone as the Eagles held a possession advantage. Godwin, ranked third in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, had at least four solid chances to score, but timely play by Hill and Godwin misfires kept them scoreless.

No. 2 Atlee had put the ball into the Godwin box rarely, but struck when a ball was served near the top of the eighteen at 11:30 mark.

Atlee sophomore Sam Armentrout, in a crowd and with her back to the net, flicked a rainbow of a header that arched just under the crossbar and over the outstretched hand of Godwin sophomore keeper Jessie Ashworth for a 1-0 lead.

At the 6:50 mark a free kick by the Eagles’ senior Marie Krider hit the crossbar and bounded away, and the half ended 1-0.

The second half began and ended with dangerous Atlee attacks, but in between the half seemed to be one attack after another by the Eagles at the Atlee defense. Twice Hill came out to meet onrushing Godwin junior forward Sarah Bellotti and deflected shots away from the goal.

Godwin corner and free kicks produced opportunities, but ended with either solid Raider defense or Eagle missed shots as the clock expired, giving Atlee the win.

Godwin assistant coach Miranda Watson thought the Eagles played well in spite of the loss.

“We just didn’t finish our opportunities and they did. We really possessed it well. Just unlucky,” said Watson.

Said Hill: “This is the only game this year I’ve been under that kind of pressure, but we were fighting back and my defense really helped me a lot.”

Atlee assistant coach Sarah Modrak, who is the sister of Godwin head boys coach Herb Modrak, also admitted to feeling some pressure.

Modrak directed the Raiders in head coach Bruce Lovelace‘s absence as Lovelace accompanied his middle school’s archery program to a national competition.

“It was a physical, hard-fought game to the end, but, yeah, I felt more pressure,” said a smiling Modrak.

Both teams return to district action Tuesday as Atlee takes on Hanover and Godwin entertains Maggie Walker.

Girls soccer, 5/3/10: Godwin 2, Cosby 1

by Chip Carter

*Mills Godwin Contributor

“They finished; we didn’t.”

That’s what Cosby senior midfielder Becca Wann offered as her first observation of Monday night’s non-district match of highly ranked teams won by visiting Mills Godwin 2-1.

And Wann was right.

Both teams had chances to ring up multiple goals, but Cosby put the Godwin defense in danger regularly throughout. They could, however, hit the back of the net only once.

The first half ended in a scoreless tie, but featured several “just misses” by both teams. Cosby got the better of the possession battle, but a solid shot and two headers by Wann and a shot by junior Joy Grove were saved by Godwin keeper sophomore Jessie Ashworth.

Godwin’s best chances were provided by speedy senior forward Marie Krider who beat Cosby defenders to long balls twice but could not convert. Krider also hit the post after a long throw by senior Kelsey Carter was then crossed to Krider by junior Sarah Bellotti.

The half also showcased a matchup of the considerable talents of Wann and Godwin junior Ellen Upton in the midfield. Both have height, speed and leaping ability.

Wann frequently puts defenses in danger with sideline throws that travel to the front of the net while Upton’s uncanny anticipation and foot skills generally gain her team possession of most midfield balls.

The game and the midfield matchup took a turn early in the second half when Upton went down after a mid-air collision and did not return. Upton’s injury, combined with the absence of junior midfielder Lauren Abraham who sat out with a concussion suffered against Collegiate Friday, left assistant coach Miranda Watson scrambling.

She rotated Krider, senior Becca Haislip, and sophomore defender Maggie Lumpkin into the midfield during the second half.

The Eagles got on the board first with 22:40 left as a Cosby free kick was booted back over the Cosby defense where Bellotti gathered it and sped toward the goal. She slid the ball along the ground to the left of diving Cosby freshman keeper Blayne Fink and into the net for a 1-0 Godwin lead. Fink was playing in place of injured regular keeper sophomore Nikki Pond, who may be out for the season.

At 17:00 minutes Cosby almost tied the game as Wann’s header off a nice cross hit the post. The Titans knotted the game 1-1 at the 10:37 mark when a long punt by Fink was headed forward to sophomore Courtney Hook who fought off a defender and pushed the ball past Ashworth into the net.

Although Cosby had the better of the possession for the next several minutes it was Godwin who was more dangerous. Krider’s free kick at 4:30 hit the crossbar.

About a minute later, Carter ran down a long pass to the left corner and kicked it off the Cosby defender for a corner kick. Sophomore Alayna Vaughan then served up a ball that Carter headed in for a 2-1 lead and the eventual game winner.

Cosby attacked aggressively putting the ball into the box several more times in the last three minutes, but did not get a solid shot as Godwin’s defense cleared the ball and the game came to an end.

“It was a game between two evenly matched teams. We had our opportunities, but didn’t capitalize. Our focus right now is on our district,” said first year Cosby coach Roger Lattimer.

Carter, who just recently returned after seven weeks from a severely sprained ankle, said, “We enjoy playing good teams because it helps us grow. I look forward to everyone being healthy at the same time so we can see how good we can be.”

“With our injuries we just had to step up and play some positions we didn’t really know, but we dug in and found a way to win,” said Watson.

Godwin returns to action with a Colonial District contest at J.R. Tucker Tuesday night. Cosby heads to a showcase tournament at Midlothian that also features Deep Run and Powhatan Thursday and Friday of this week.
