Dylan Carlton has taken playing with an injury to new heights.

Varina’s captain boys volleyball player has been playing for three season with a prosthetic left lower leg.

An accident four years ago led to a partial amputation of his left leg.

After months of rehibilitation as a 13-year-old eighth grader, Carlton recovered to use the leg well.

No one knew it would be this well. Watch is story on the left.

Boys Volleyball, 9/29/09: Deep Run 3, Atlee 1

Deep Run, members of the Colonial District, is through with a two-day Capital District gauntlet.

The Wildcats lost a tough five-gamer to Highland Springs Monday at home, but put together an impressive four-game win over Atlee Tuesday night to quiet a rowdy crowd.

Down three points in the deciding game, Deep Run, ranked sixth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, ran off seven straight points.

“It was all team effort. I couldn’t have done it alone,” said Deep Run’s powerful middle Ross Madden, one of a few holdovers from last year’s state championship squad. “We all stepped it up and pounded. We just got it done.”

The Wildcats raced out early, winning 25-18 and 25-21 in the first two games, both competitive, but never out of Deep Run’s grasp.

The third game was all Atlee. The Raiders played well early, which got its student section into the match.

Robert Chilcoat (16 kills) and Kyle Rodgers (nine kills) started finding the range at the net, while jump servers Chilcoat, Jonathan Sperlazza and Jordan Stringfellow made it difficult on the Wildcat back row.

Atlee led by as much as nine before making things interesting with a 25-19 triumph.

“I think it got the guys fired up,” Atlee coach Michelle Black said of their home crowd. “We have a lot of tweaking to do. We need to work on defense and a couple of things on offense.”

The Raider offense looked fine early in game four. Pass, set and spike was a common occurence, all the way to a 21-18 lead that looked like it would lead to a fifth game.

All of a sudden, Deep Run started playing extraordinary defense. Usual Atlee points became long rallies that Deep Run would pull out.

A timeout by Black at 21 apiece couldn’t halt the momentum, as Deep Run finished the match with the aforementioned seven-point bolt.

Garrett Short scored for match point, and Eric Pollitt put in one of his 11 blocks to end it.

“That’s what we need. We haven’t had too many large crowds,” Deep Run coach Kevin Pond said. “We need to be pushed. We were pushed hard tonight by Atlee.”

Golf: Deep Run wins Colonial, 9/28/09

ASHLAND – Deep Run didn’t take long to make up for its loss of the Colonial District regular-season title, winning the district tournament title by 21 shots Monday afternoon at Hanover Country Club.

The best individual scores of the day all came from the Wildcats. Mikey Cantor and Adam Anschultz posted a 75, 4-over par, and Jason Schumacher and Chris O’Neill registered 76s to distance the Wildcats from runner-up Douglas Freeman (323).

Deep Run lost a playoff to Mills Godwin for the district crown last week, and had to win or finish second to have a chance at defending its region title.

“We struggled in a match against Godwin Friday,” Cantor said. “It feels good to come back and get a big win against them. Hopefully we can carry that on to regionals, and hopefully states.”

Cantor, a sophomore, and Anschultz, a senior, tied for the top individual honors and were reluctant to face each in a one-hole playoff.

Cantor took the hole by one shot, after Hermitage’s Thomas Cole beat out Freeman’s Dave Dwight for the last individual region spot.

Now Deep Run and Mills Godwin, Maggie Walker’s Tim Earley (77) and Travis McCall (79), Freeman’s Matt Harman (80) and Zach Carl (80), Patrick Henry’s Trent Thomas (80) and Cole (81) will set their sites on Monday and Tuesday’s region tournament.

Monday takes place at Jefferson/Lakeside, and they finish up Tuesday at Stonehenge.

“I think we’re all going to have to play well,” Anschultz said. “But I’m looking forward to us being in states.”

Player of the year: Jason Park, Mills Godwin
Coach of the year: Tom Hot, Mills Godwin
