2008 Volleyball Showcase

Some of the top boys and girls volleyball teams from Virginia competed in the 2008 Volleyball Showcase on Friday and Saturday at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

The Deep Run boys denied Cosby of back-to-back titles by beating the Titans 25-17, 25-22, 25-18 in the championship.

L.C. Bird took third place with a 25-18, 25-23, 9-25, 25-23 victory over Frank Cox.

On the girls side the Central Region’s best finish also came from Deep Run. The Wildcats defeated Hanover in an intense five games 25-15, 23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-10 to claim fifth place in the Red Division. Floyd Kellam won the girls crown.

Meadowbrook takes opener

by Seneca Contomanolis

Meadowbrook started L.C. Bird‘s season the same way they ended it last year.

Quarterback Desmond Coble rushed for two touchdowns and the defense came up big late as the host Monarchs defeated the Skyhawks 26-13 on Friday night.

L.C. Bird lost 14-12 to Meadowbrook in the Division 6 semifinals for their only loss last season after beating the Monarchs 18-12 in the opener.

“It’s a big win for us, it always is,” Meadowbrook coach Bill Bowles said. “We know that they are going to be a quality team, a well coached team.

“We start off with them and sometimes that doesn’t work out to be the best thing but in this case it gives us one under our belt in a tough football game.”

Coble had scoring runs of seven and 57 yards in the second quarter to push the Monarchs ahead 20-0 at halftime. In the third quarter Coble’s leg cramped forcing him to come out of the game but he was able to return after missing a series.

The junior, who quarterbacked MBK to the 2007 Central Region title game, finished with 126 yards rushing on 17 attempts.

The Skyhawks closed to within seven points in the fourth quarter at 20-13 but Meadowbrook linebacker Deontay Webster intercepted a Dontae Jefferson pass and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown with 5:38 remaining in the game.

Rodney Ragin
sealed the deal about a minute later with his own interception at the Meadowbrook 25-yard line.

“The defense stepped up very well tonight,” Coble said. “Had a big interception by Deontay Webster and he took it back for a touchdown. That was a big relief in the fourth quarter.”

It looked like an opening game for both teams as the squads combined for 19 penalties.

Meadowbrook struck first after L.C. Bird was forced to punt out of their own end zone giving the Monarchs great field position at the Skyhawks’ 24.

Eight plays later sophomore running back Donico Phillips put MBK ahead 7-0 on a four-yard run with 5:27 left in the first quarter.

Phillips rushed for 102 yards on 20 carries behind a strong line led by seniors Morgan Moses and Derek Tinsley.

Moses and Tinsley’s work on the defensive line along with the rest of the defense held the L.C. Bird offense in check during the first half.

In the second half the Skyhawks scored 13 unanswered points to make it a competitive contest again.

Kenyon Lewis (nine carries, 85 yards) accounted for both touchdowns scoring on a three-yard run with 25 seconds left in the third quarter and then on a 56 yard dash a minute into the fourth.

“We took a while to get everything going, that’s my fault,” L.C. Bird coach David Bedwell said.

Jefferson completed 5 of 17 passes for 91 yards. Josh Coffey caught two of the balls for 55 yards receiving.

Bedwell hopes the defeat will only help his team down the line.

“Last year we didn’t take care of this till late,” said Bedwell of the loss. “This year we took care of it early. Either they are going to learn from this and get better or just accept this and not get better. But we have some tough kids and I know they are going to learn from this.”

JM prevails over Wildcats

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

A few weeks ago, when DigitalSports visited John Marshall’s preseason practice, coach Marvin Bridges said his defense and a strong running game would be JM’s strengths.

Well, he wasn’t lying.

The Justices racked up close to 200 yards rushing and held Armstrong scoreless until less than five minutes remained in the contest, holding on for a 13-6 victory Friday afternoon.

Jayem junior Frank Bullock racked up 128 yards on 27 carries, including the eventual game-winning touchdown with 58 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

“Frank Bullock did an excellent job running,” Bridges said. “We thought Kenny Collins was going to be the one today but Frank look like he had it going, so we just stayed with him.

“He was hitting the defender before they were hitting him.”

John Marshall (1-0) hit Armstrong (0-1) with the game’s first score on its second possession of the game. Arnold Harris hit Randall Braxton, the game’s defensive star, with an 11-yard strike.

Then JM went to its ground game. Four runs later, Collins scampered in from 13 yards out crossing the right side of the goal line. The extra-point attempt was blocked as JM led 6-0.

It stayed that way until halftime as both offenses made progress but faltered with a penalty or a turnover.

The Justices almost scored late in the first half as Quantae Cooley, a 6-2 defensive back, made a leaping interception and returned it about 50 yards before being tripped. JM couldn’t convert before the first-half buzzer.

But they did on their second second-half possession. Bullock, who fumbled to end a promising drive to start the final 16 minutes, ran for 41 yards on the drive, including his aforementioned TD to put JM up 13-0.

“I thanked the line for their blocking,” Bullock said. “They said they were going to get me a hundred, and they got me.”

Braxton got another catch, this time on defense, nabbing Armstrong backup QB Xavia Gary‘s offering and returning it to Armstrong’s 7-yard line. The 6-3 senior ran out of gas and ran into cramps once Armstrong corralled him.

“I just feel like I had to capitalize and key on their weaknesses,” said Braxton, who also had two sacks from his linebacker spot. “I could have scored but I cramped up. I have to eat before the game.”

Armstrong’s Dewayne Burnette had to have eaten before his effort Friday. His two catches were terrific.

One went for 18 yards on a pass under pressure from Gary. The other went for a 37-yard TD with just under five minutes to go in the contest as the Wildcats stayed alive.

“Everything that gets in his way he catches,” Armstrong coach Mark Robinson said of the JV callup. “I thought we had opportunities there. They did well but we knew we were weak in the [offensive] line. They took advantage of it.

“All credit goes to John Marshall.”

John Marshall 6 0 7 0 – 13
Armstrong     0 0 0 6 –  6
JM – Collins 13 run (kick blocked)
JM – Bullock 6 run (Chris Morrow kick)
A – Burnette 37 pass from Gary (kick failed)

RUSHING

John Marshall – Bullock 27 carries, 128 yards, Collins 10-48, Harris 2-(minus 15); Armstrong – Brian Pearson 4-28, Terrell Fowler 8-27, Greyson Gilbert 1-5, Gary 3-3, Vaughn Jones 1-1, Tyee Williams 1-0

PASSING

John Marshall – Harris 3 completions, 7 attempts, 0 interceptions, 30 yards; Armstrong – Gary 5-14-2-78; Mark Robinson 1-3-0-43

RECEIVING

John Marshall – Akeem Brown 2 receptions, 19 yards, Braxton 1-11; Armstrong – Burnette 2-55, Jones 2-50, DeAngelo Wilson 2-16

ROBINSON ON MEND: Armstrong starting QB Mark Robinson is out with a foot injury. He entered the game in the fourth quarter and found Vaughn Jones on a 43-yard bomb to set up the Wildcats’ TD.

Coach Robinson, also the father of the injured QB, said he’s been dealing with it for three weeks. Once he does heal, Gary will be able to join a talented receiving corps.

Mills Godwin FB preview

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

Mills Godwin is young, green, youthful, inexperienced and whatever other adjective that comes to mind when referring to a team that lost 27 seniors.

Not just any 27 but some of the best football players in the school’s history: RB Chris Fornataro (walk-on at University of Southern California), QB Travis Lane (Hampden-Sydney), WR Mason Simpson (Hampden-Sydney) and DE Grady Bing.

“We’re trying to grow up fast,” Godwin coach Will Kitchen said. “We trying to be patient. We’re trying to work hard. We’re trying to grow up as quickly as we can.”

There are all seniors and juniors in the starting lineup, but most have little field experience on the varsity level.

Blake Forlines (6-0, 170) is one. A terrific receiving option that hurt defenses on the other side of Simpson. He’s the main man now.

Pierce Few (6-1, 205) steps in for Lane. He’s a senior as well as Forlines.

They’ll try to have the same type of combo that Lane and Simpson made successful. Tyler Lane is a returner at wideout, and he’ll be on the other side.

A wild card in the receiving group could be Fletcher Lumpkin, better known for his basketball prowess in Godwin territory. He’s joined the football team and will also play safety.

Few should have a good receiving group to get the ball to. He’ll hand off to RB Kevin Wood, a junior.

There are four seniors across Mills Godwin’s front, but only one player is a returning starter, Zack Lapinski.

“We’re working a lot on route running,” Few said. “Three-step drop, five-step drop, getting the basics down. The o-line is working hard on their pass blocking and run blocking, so it’s going pretty good.”

Defensively, it’s the same story. A few key returners, but a lot of inexperience.

A strong point should be the secondary, as three of the four starters are returning varsity players in Forlines, Lane and Few.

The newbie is Lumpkin, which should be a plus with his unusual height (6-5) at safety.

The LB crew will lean on Justin McAdams (6-0, 195) heavily. The line is all new, but should be quick at the point of attack.

“We’re trying to make sure we play some fundamental football defensively and offensively,” said Kitchen on Thursday’s upcoming scrimmage. “We’re trying to get lined up correctly. We’re trying to get off blocks. We’re trying to run to the football and make plays when we get there.”

Big game: Douglas Freeman. Regardless of what kind of season both teams will have, this is the biggest game of their seasons.

Key players: Blake Forlines, WR/CB, Sr.; Tyler Lane, WR/CB, Jr.; Kevin Wood, RB, Jr.; Zack Lapinski, OL, Sr.; Justin McAdams, LB, Sr.; Pierce Few, QB/S, Sr.

Key losses:
Travis Lane, QB (Hampden-Sydney); Chris Fornataro, RB (USC); Mason Simpson, WR (Hampden-Sydney); Grady Bing, DL

Top newcomer: Fletcher Lumpkin, WR/S. Basketball standout should provide plenty of aggressiveness on defense and a great jump ball WR on offense. A red-zone threat.

The
skinny:
Yes, Godwin is very young or inexperienced in many key spots. But the Eagles play fundamental football at all times. If they can stay within themselves and not turn the ball over, it could be another successful campaign.

L.C. Bird FB preview

by Seneca Contomanolis
DigitalSports Richmond
scontomanolis@digitalsports.com

Like a great college football program L.C. Bird doesn’t rebuild, it reloads.

The Skyhawks have been to the Division 6 playoffs eight straight seasons under coach David Bedwell. Five of those times L.C. Bird advanced to the Central Region final even while graduating at least 35 players from each of the previous teams.

It might sound strange then to hear that Bedwell was a little surprised when L.C. Bird went undefeated and won the Dominion District title last season before falling to Meadowbrook in the first round of the playoffs.

“It was kind of unexpected,” Bedwell said. “Going in we didn’t know what to expect. Every year you just never really know.”

Bedwell might be feeling the same way this season after loosing 38 seniors that included playmakers Donovan Jefferson (WR/CB), Kendrick McClary (TE) and Josh Castlebury (RB/LB).

What will it take then to continue the tradition of success at Bird?

“I think things just have to remain status quo,” Bedwell said. “We have to work hard, we have to believe in what we’re doing. Our kids have to come practice hard everyday just like we always do. We’re going to have to play a little above our heads, we’re kind of inexperienced this year.”

A place on the field where there will be some veterans is the backfield.

Donte Jefferson returns for his second season under center. The senior broke just about every passing record at L.C. Bird last season with just under 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns in the Skyhawks run oriented offense.

“He manages the offense for us,” Bedwell said. “He does what we ask him to do and gets the ball to the guy we want him to.”

Seniors Jerry Brown and Kenyon Lewis take over at running back for Castlebury and both have speed and big play capabilities.

Brown will also take some snaps at wide receiver along with Darryl Johnston, Noral Purnell and Chris Moore.

A key to how Jefferon and his running backs perform will no doubt be tied to how a young offensive line comes together. Three-year starter Steven Rowe is back at center and Xavier Tyler returns at guard.

“Their working hard, they’ve actually impressed me a lot in all the scrimmages,” said Rowe of the line. “At first they started off a little slow and I didn’t think they were going to get it together but through all the practices we have started working together and getting a lot better.”

On the defensive side Jaymon Roberson and Xavier Myles anchor the line. Bradley Connor (Sr.) is at linebacker and will be asked to tutor a unit that features a junior, sophomore and freshman.

In the secondary Anthony Harris (CB) and Stephen Lee (SS) are two important pieces.

Harris is only a sophomore but is physical and is a great athlete. Lee is not the biggest kid on the field (5-7, 165) but always gives you all he has.

Big game: at Meadowbrook. The Skyhawks biggest game of the year could be their first one. L.C. Bird beat the Monarchs to start the season last year but then fell them in the region playoffs.

Key players: Donte Jefferson, QB, Sr.; Jerry Brown, RB/WR, Sr.; Kenyon Lewis, RB, Sr.; Steven Rowe, C, Sr.; Jaymon Roberson, DL, Sr.; Jaymon Roberson, NG; Xavier Myles, DL, Jr.; Xavier Tyler, OL; Anthony Harris, CB; Stephen Lee, SS, Jr.

Key losses: Donovan Jefferson, WR/DB (Virginia State); Kendrick McClary, TE (Norfolk State); Josh Castlebury, RB/LB; Andrew Belcher, OT; Eddie Palko, OL; Nick Taylor, DL

The skinny: Because of the success L.C. Bird has had they come into every season with a big target on their back. They always seem to be able to handle the pressure and it should be no different this year.

Midlothian FB preview

by Seneca Contomanolis
DigitalSports Richmond
scontomanolis@digitalsports.com

Nothing comes easy in the Dominion District.

Midlothian coach Dave Cooper knows this all to well. He hopes his team does, too.

“They’ve got to understand that we can’t show up and win games,” Cooper said. “We have to give great effort, we have to play hard, we have to execute. Those are all things we can only work on right now in practice.”

A Trojans team with only seven seniors last season managed a 2-8 overall record. This year with a lot more experience and a strong team chemistry Midlothian hopes to play better on Friday nights.

“I think potentially we can give a lot of people fits in the Dominion,” Cooper said. “Wins are out there for us, we just have to go out and get them.”

Quarterback Josiah Shelton returns at quarterback for the Trojans. The junior has a lot of athletic ability and should be a dual-threat with the ball.

Senior Bryce Lilly will be in the backfield with Shelton at running back. Lilly is a big back at 6-2, 215 and will be hard for opposing defenses to bring down.

“He is hard-nosed and tough, a good all-around football player,” Cooper said.

The wide receiver unit is inexperienced and depending on how juniors Charles Poindexter, Robert Jones and Mitchell Pereria develop may be a huge factor in how the offense performs.

On both sides of the ball the line is young. Senior center Callen Larus is the most seasoned and will have to lead the group.

Junior linemen Danny Klein (6-5, 260) and Matt Arkema (6-4, 285) will be asked to play a little both ways giving Midlothian great size.

The defensive end positions are held down by returning senior starters Daniel Mullally and Neil Mulvany. Lilly is at linebacker but the rest of the linebacker spots are still up for grabs.

Perhaps the strongest area on the whole Trojans team is their secondary. All four starters return with three-year starters Chase Delans (FS) and Jimmy Krahe (SS) leading the way.

“It’s nice to have more experience,” Delans said. “Last year we were just trying to get the coverage down. Now that we are basically playing the same coverage it will be nice to know what we are doing more.”

J.R. Tucker preview

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

Who is Mac Leighton?

A guy bold enough, confident enough and ambitious enough to take 0-10 J.R. Tucker and try to turn the Tigers into a respectable program.

“The biggest challenge here is not to try to get the players, but to try to boost morale and change the overall culture,” Leighton said. “That is the first objective I have as the head coach is to come here and change the entire culture, change the way that we approach football.

“Not only out here on the field but also in the school building as well.”

The Tigers scored 29 points total last season, as nine of their 10 opponents scored 30 or more points in their wins over Tucker.

Participation is usually decent, but not great for a Division 6 team.

Though the numbers are not overwhleming, Tucker is beginning to get the school’s best athletes out on the football field.

Basketball standout Orlando Irby has joined the fold. Track standout Quran Page is on the gridiron as well.

It’s a wonderful sight to Leighton, who at 30 years old is one of, if not the, youngest coach in Division 6 in the commonwealth of Virginia.

Before coming to Tucker he was the defensive coordinator at George Washington-Danville, a program that plays for championships consistently.

Leighton, a former Randolph-Macon player, is hoping to bring the same kind of success to Tucker at some point. But baby steps are what Leighton and the Tigers are taking.

“We’ve got a lot to work on, but we’ve got a lot to work with,” Leighton said. “That’s not a bad problem by any means.”

Leading the way for Tucker is Zach Midulla (6-2, 230), one of the top defenders in the area.

He’ll play on the team’s strong side sometimes at linebacker, sometimes at defensive end, with DL Josh Nuckols, a weight-room warrior this summer.

On the other side of them is Irby at DE and Page at LB to form a speedy weak side. Up the middle, Chris DeLeon is at linebacker to provide the thumping with captain Andre Biel.

Tucker’s QB should be Jerred Bennett, entering his second year as a starter. He’s a junior. A number of players will get carries and see passes, and Leighton is pleased with that.

“I’m definitely very excited about this challenge.”
