Football, 6/22/10: Dinwiddie’s Marshall, Hall commit

Dinwiddie continued its offseason gridiron success as two of its best players committed to Virginia Tech to play football this week.

First was quarterback Chris Hall on Monday.

The 6-4, 230-pound quarterback will play tight end with the Hokies and will not enroll until January 2012. Hall had two other offers from Virginia and Marshall. The Thundering Herd wanted him as a signal caller.

Next was Corey Marshall, a 6-2, 240-pound defensive end that was high on big-time program’s lists, including Tech, Virginia, Michigan and West Virginia, to name a few.

Ranked in the top 20 in the nation by position by some recruiting services, the rising senior is a big coup for the Hokies, who pride themselves on nabbing the best in the state.

Marshall is one of the best 2011 prospects in the Central Region, right up there with Hermitage’s Curtis Grant, the top player in the nation at outside linebacker.

Marshall, a two-time all-DigitalSports pick, will enroll in the fall of 2011 after his senior year with Dinwiddie is complete.

A 2009 graduate for the Generals, Pierre Hawkes, has also earned a Division I spot. The cornerback went to New Mexico Institute after helping the Generals to the state Group AAA, Division 5 final.

He took a chance at the junior college and found the spot he wanted all along, according to Generals coach Billy Mills – Liberty University.

“After a year of growth, he has got the opportunity to go where he wanted out of college,” Mills wrote in an email.

The Generals have had a tremendous run in putting football players in school since Mills has taken over.

Softball, 6/12/10: McLean 4, Lee-Davis 2

by Stephen M. Lewis

CHANTILLY – Lee-Davis coach Jackie Davis thought a four in the scoreline could mean a victory for her youthful Confederates.

But she wanted it under the ‘R’ column, not the one under the ‘E’.

Lee-Davis, usually a stout defensive team, committed four errors, and a potent hitting McLean team took advantage to the tune of a 4-2 victory for the state Group AAA softball championship.

The Highlanders scratched out seven hits against Kelly Heinz, which seemed like 14 since the sensational sophomore was coming off of a perfect game 24 hours before.

Most of the hits came a critical junctures, with McLean runners on the base paths and in scoring position.

“We made mistakes defensively that cost us,” Davis said.
“That’s usually our game plan. It seemed like we had the same gameplan.

“Try to put the ball in play and make the other
teams make mistakes.”

L-D scratched out a run in the third inning as the speedy Haleigh Cottrell scored from third on senior Amanda Parker‘s grounder.

Still with the bases loaded, Lee-Davis wouldn’t score again until the bottom of the seventh.

McLean would put up four runs in that span.

Jessie Straub‘s run answered right away in the top of the fourth, set up by a throwing error to first base that allowed Straub to advance to third.

Lauren Sutherland drove in Carolyn Gilbertson, who had reached second base after an error on a ball to first to throw her out. It got in the dugout and advance her to scoring position.

“Those are game breakers I’m sorry to say,” Highlanders coach Maurice Tawil said of Lee-Davis’ errors. “Against a good team you can’t make those errors, and we’ve guarded against that all season long.

“And today, we didn’t make any.”

Lee-Davis picked the wrong day to have a tough defensive game, but still managed to have the best softball season in school history, having made its first appearance in a state final game with only one senior on the roster.

“I know they don’t want to hear it now, but they’ll be back here next year,” Tawil said.

McLean   000 102 1 – 4 7 0
Lee-Davis 001 000 1 – 2 6 4
Bell and Gilbertson; Heinz and Cottrell
Records: McLean (25-5); Lee-Davis (21-2)

Girls soccer, 6/12/10: SB 4, Cosby 0

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

Cosby needed to add one more chapter to end its storybook in grand fashion.

But the Titans ran out of ink with a few pages to go.

Stone Bridge blitzed the Central Region hopeful with three goals in the second half, taking the Northern Region’s 24th state Group AAA girls soccer title 4-0 in the 27th year of the tournament.

As dominant as that mark is, Stone Bridge was just as impressive.

SB showed its prowess with impressive possession and an attacking offense, coupled with an aggressive defense that kept Cosby uncomfortable and surprisingly gave the Titans no corner kicks, a dangerous play for Cosby opponents with 5-10 leaper Becca Wann in the box.

Though the Bulldogs were in control in the first half, no goals were scored by them.

An own goal gave SB a 1-0 lead as Gina D’Orazio knocked in a ball put in the box by Murielle Tiernan as D’Orazio was trying to hold off Emily Luna.

That was in the 28th minute.

“It seemed like the cards were against us today,” Cosby first-year coach Roger Lattimer said. “Maybe we just used up all of our luck before this game.”

The floodgates opened quickly in the second half.

In the 45th minute, Tiernan crossed to an open Ashley Herndon as the freshman pair made it 2-0.

Four minutes later, Herndon got behind the defense on Jazmyn Ervins long ball.

Herndon, who scored her 29th goal of the season on the play, acted as though she would try to head it past Cosby freshman Blayne Fink, but was only controlling the ball.

The play shook Fink off the play and Herndon got an easy one for a 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs would get another one from Sara Bowers, as Fink saved her first shot, but the ball trickled out and no Titan was there to clear it, so Bowers finished for the final margin, drying out any Cosby opportunity for a fantasy ending.

Wann afterward was spent, barely able to stand with an injured right leg with a tank on empty after finishing the semifinal game in goal to finish penalty kicks.

She said it best.

“I wish it could have ended then.”

Cosby            0 0 – 0
Stone Bridge 1 3 – 4
SB: Herndon 2, own goal, Bowers
Saves: Fink (C) 4; Harmison (SB) 4
Records: Cosby (19-3-1); Stone Bridge (21-0-2)

Softball, 6/11/10: L-D 3, Madison 0

CHANTILLY – Perfect is a strong, specific word, but it fits Lee-Davis and Kelly Heinz for one afternoon.

The sophomore pitcher threw a perfect game as the Confederates down James Madison 3-0 in Friday’s state Group AAA softball semifinals at Westfield High School.

Heinz was as smooth as the ketchup of the same name, striking out 11 Warhawks, painting corners and flat-out overpowering Madison with her blistering speed.

When Madison did get bats on elusive pitches, Lee-Davis’ defense was stout.

Lacie Madison got a bunch of balls at third that she handled with ease.

Outstanding left fielder robbed Madison of a sure hit in the fourth inning, and Taylor Melton went deep in the hole in the seventh and threw to Meredith Holmes for the first out of the final inning.

“The best pitching we’ve seen,” Madison coach John Schneeberger said. “I’ll leave it at that. We couldn’t hit her.”

Charyssa Parent walked to start the contest, followed by a terrific bunt from Lacie Madison that Madison couldn’t handle.

A second passed ball let the speedy Parent score from third, then Holmes grounded to second to score Madison.

Lee-Davis added a third run in the fifth as Haleigh Cottrell scored on a Madison throwing error, plenty enough for Heinz.

“I was just throwing with a little more kick in it today,” Heinz said. “It worked out for me.”

Lee-Davis will face McLean at 2 p.m., a 5-0 winner over Ocean Lakes, back at Westfield High Saturday.

Lee-Davis 200 010 0 – 3 4 0
Madison   000 000 0 – 0 0 2

Girls soccer, 6/11/10: Cosby 2, Loudoun Valley 1

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

CHANTILLYBecca Wann‘s illustrious high-school athletic career just reached new heights.

After playing 100 minutes in the midfield, Wann entered goal for the first time in her high-school career and stopped Loudoun Valley’s first two penalty kicks in a 2-1 victory in the state Group AAA semifinals Friday at Westfield High School.

“I came off the field and coach [Roger Lattimer] was like, ‘Becca, can you go in goal?’ ” said an exhausted but elated Wann. “I did what I remembered to do in eighth grade, and that was it.”

What an eighth grade year that must’ve been, and what a contest this was.

Both teams traded strength in the first half, Cosby for the first 20, LV for the next, who actually got a header goal from Amber Cook but it was waved off for offside.

It seemed like OT was looming, but a ball got loose in LV’s box late in the second half.

Joy Grove blasted at keeper DiDi Haracic who came up with the save, but it trickled out to who else but Wann.

She took a powerful shot that bounced off LV defenders and into the net in the 68th minute for what seemed like may be a Cosby win.

Undaunted, Loudoun responded eight minutes later on a beautiful cross by Lexi Clarke to Ashley Manning, who beat Cosby’s freshman keeper Blayne Fink, who played enormous in place of regular starter Nikki Pond (ODP event).

The next 20 minutes of overtimes went with no goals and it set up the heroics of Wann, and potent PK’ing by Grove, Tessa Broadwater, Hayden Metzger and finally Kelsey Conyers to end the contest.

“I was just feeling that Becca is the leader of this team, the heart and soul of this team,” Lattimer said. “You want your star in there. Everybody looks to Becca to win every single game. We had that chance to do it and look at what she did.”

All she did was take herself and Cosby to new heights – the state championship, Saturday at 3 p.m. versus Stone Bridge, a surprising 4-0 victor over Frank Cox.

Loudoun Valley 0 1 0 0 0 – 1
Cosby              0 1 0 0 1 – 2

Baseball, 6/11/10: Woodbridge 9, Cosby 4

CHANTILLY – A seven-run third inning for Woodbridge halted Cosby’s dream at a state title in the state Group AAA baseball semifinals Friday at Westfield High School.

Cosby pitchers walked six batters in the inning, setting the stage for the Vikings huge frame.

The Titans blasted 11 hits, including home runs from Kyle McKay and Garrett Birnbaum in the second inning, but couldn’t score enough to offset Woodbridge’s huge inning.

The Vikings, unbeaten at 27-0, will face West Springfield, a 3-2 winner over Western Branch, Saturday at 3 p.m. for the state hardware, while Cosby (20-7) wonders about an inning with a strike zone that seemed to disappear.

CHANTILLY – Deep Run’s journey to a second state title in three years ended to the hands of three second-half Battlefield goals Friday at Westfield High School.

Troy Allaire had two of them, the first coming in the 42nd minute when he seemed to be offside, but attached to a Deep Run defender.

He beat Deep Run state quarterfinal hero Blake Carrey from point-blank range on a header for a 1-0 lead.

Only 10 minutes later, Adam Clements used his brilliant speed to beat Deep Run’s defense down the left side and also scored right at the net.

After physical play led to several yellow cards for Deep Run, Allaire scored again on a breakaway as Patrick Fitzsimmons held his jersey trying to commit and foul and halt the breakaway to finish off the Wildcats, ranked No. 2 in the nation by ESPN Rise.

“We made a mistake on the first goal, we let a ball bounce on the second goal,” Deep Run coach Frank Ford said. “They punished us for the mistakes we made.”

Girls soccer, 6/8/10: Cosby 3, Ocean Lakes 0

by Chip Carter
Mills Godwin Correspondent

The homestanding Cosby girls soccer team put together a complete performance combining spectacular offense with solid defense Tuesday night to dominate and defeat Ocean Lakes 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the Group AAA state tournament.

Cosby’s offensive onslaught began with its first touch as Central Region player of the year Becca Wann put the ball in scoring position time after time.

With less than three minutes gone in the half, Wann collected a ball at midfield and nicely fed speedy Cosby sophomore forward Courtney Hook who did the rest, blazing ahead of the trailing defender and sliding the ball past Ocean Lakes keeper Codi Massey for a quick 1-0 lead.

Wann and fellow midfielder junior Kelsey Conyers dominated possession through most of the first half and provided the Titans with consistent scoring chances.

Ocean Lakes’ best chance came with about 20 minutes to play in the half as skilled and dangerous senior forward Kayla White made two impressive one-on-one moves to elude defenders and then unloaded a laser past charging Titan keeper Nikki Pond.

The shot hit the right post and rebounded away. That proved to be the Dolphins’ last real threat as the Cosby defense cleared the ball or connected with their midfielders for the rest of the game.

Cosby’s third goal came at the 34:00 in the second half as Hook chased down a long ball and dropped a pass back to onrushing outside mid freshman Tessa Broadwater who deposited her shot into the upper ninety from the left corner of the eighteen.

First-year Cosby coach Roger Lattimer soon began to substitute liberally and many of the Titan starters rested for the last 20 minutes.

Asked about his game strategy, Lattimer said, “We talked about a few things, but we do what we do. They have to beat us. Our edge is all our weapons.”

Cosby advances to the semifinals and will face the Northwest champion Loudoun Valley Friday at Westfield High School in Chantilly at 11 a.m. The game time is early to accommodate Cosby’s graduation ceremony.

CHIP’S CHATTER
* Central Region teams have advanced to the finals only twice in state history – last year with Mills Godwin and several years ago with Clover Hill.

* No Central Region team has ever won the state championship as Northern Virginia teams with larger schools in a soccer hotbed have dominated.
