Boys soccer, 6/8/10: DR 4, Great Bridge 3 (PKs)

After the contest, Blake Carrey said he wouldn’t have been interviewed if the game didn’t go to penalty kicks.

Well, Deep Run wouldn’t be going to the state Group AAA semifinals without Carrey, either.

The junior keeper came up with two huge stops in the PK portion, and Jake Summers converted as the Wildcats survived to beat Great Bridge 4-3 in PKs after a 1-1 tie Tuesday night.

The Wildcats will advance to face Northwest Champion Battlefield, who ousted Northern runner-up McLean 4-1 in PKs, 2-2 in regulation and OT.

Back to Carrey, who stared down two of Great Bridge’s best with their feet, Ryan Fiesta and Sam Hecker, the second and third up for the runner-up from Chesapeake.

“As soon as [Fiesta] kicked it, I realized I went the wrong way,” Carrey said. “As soon as it hit my left foot I was happy about that.

“On the second one, as soon as I saw it going that way I was ecstatic about that.”

So was Deep Run, especially after Jake Summers punched in the final PK to take the match, a 2 1/2-hour epic set to end with the sun up, but finishing under the lights.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect the game to go that far,” Summers said. “I don’t know if you heard, but they got killed in their regional final.

“I think that was part of it, we came out slow and it took us a while to get into the game.”

It didn’t take Paul Duval‘s squad anytime to get focused, pressuring Deep Run up and down the field.

Yes, Great Bridge dropped a 7-0 defeat to Frank Cox in the region final, but that was without star keeper Josh Frecham, who was out with a concussion and who saved many would-be Deep Run goals Tuesday.

It was obviously a different team that Deep Run, ranked second in the nation by ESPN Rise behind Cox, was fortunate to get by.

“We wanted to control what they do,” said Great Bridge coach Paul Duval, leading the Wildcats into their first state tournament in boys soccer in over 30 years. “If we had the chances we would try to counter quickly.

“Deep Run’s a great squad. Probably one of the best soccer matches I’ve seen in high school in 10 years of doing this.”

Swinging a good bat can get a win. Throwing good pitches can do the same.

When both collide at the same time, a convincing win will occur as Cosby dominated Gloucester 10-1 in the state Group AAA quarterfinals Tuesday.

The Titans, the Central Region champ, advanced to Friday’s noon semifinal at Westfield High School to face Northwest Region champion Woodbridge, a 5-4 winner over Northern runner-up W.T. Woodson.

The pitching, defense and hitters were all responsible for the advancement.

Cosby’s ace Danny Mooney was under control.

Not a strikeout pitcher – he had two – he routinely gave his club routine grounders and fly balls that Cosby consistently handled.

“We’ve been hitting the ball real well lately, so basically all I have to do is go out there and throw strikes,” the senior said. “The defense is there so it makes it pretty easy on me.”

The Titans bats are not easy on any hurler. Mitchell Shifflett led the way again, going 4-for-5, a triple short of the cycle.

His fourth-inning solo homer off starter Matt Fischgrund gave Cosby a 3-1 lead.

The next inning, 8-hitter Kyle McKay dropped a two-run shot over the left-field fence that put the Titans out to a 5-1 lead.

“Just looking for a fastball to hit,” McKay said. “Got it. Swung on it. Drove it.”

Sounds pretty simple, and maybe it is for the Titans, since Tim Perry and Ben Sisk put up close to identical lines (3 for 4, 3 RBI by Perry) in Cosby’s 17-hit slugfest.

Gloucester coach Derek Kibler was impressed.

“They battled, put the ball in play,” said Kibler, who saw his Dukes to a 2-8 start before an Eastern Region runner-up performance. “They do all the things you want good hitters to do.”

Gloucester 100 000 0 –   1  4 2
Cosby        101 134 X – 10 17 1

Baseball, 6/5/10: Cosby 8, Matoaca 7

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

Cosby has added more hardware to its lengthy collection in a short period of time, dispatching of Matoaca 8-7 in eight innings for the Central Region baseball crown Saturday afternoon at the steamy Diamond.

The Titans entered the semifinals with the most losses of any team left, mostly because of a blistering schedule, which did nothing but help Cosby to the crown.

“I thought that we played the best competition in the Central Region,” Cosby coach Tim Lowery said. “And I think that made us to the point where we are today. I think our kids learned, and we saw good pitching all the way through, so we were getting quality at-bats every day.”

Cosby threw up five runs in the first two innings at the plate, the latter an RBI double by Luke Lowery that scored who else but Mitchell Shifflett.

The Virginia-bound center fielder would have garnered tournament MVP honors if there was such an award, causing constant chaos with his lightning speed and he also brought a fiery bat the whole week.

“I just came out and tried to take it one at-bat at a time,” said Shifflett, who finished 4 for 5 with the game-winning hit. “When I get on base I just try to get a good read.”

Austin Kilbourne took it upon himself to awaken Matoaca’s bats.

He sent Travis McQueen‘s first pitch of the second inning over the left-field fence, the only homer in The Diamond in three region games.

Matoaca went on to put up three runs in the third, but still trailed 7-4 going into the final inning, and Cosby ace Danny Mooney entered to close things out.

“When you’ve got a guy like Mooney on the mound, and you get two outs on you, it’s always tough,” Matoaca coach Fred Stoots said. “My kids didn’t give up, they fought back and scored a couple of runs there.

“I was hoping we could get one more.”

Three was good enough to extend the game. Kilbourne doubled to center for two runs, and Forrest Lodge followed with an RBI single to tie the game.

It all set the table for Shifflett, who took Kilbourne to left to score Kyle McKay for the winner and more Cosby hardware.

The Titans have won girls basketball, girls soccer and now a baseball crown in the 2009-2010 school year.

“We set this goal earlier in the season, and we got here,” Shifflett said. “It feels good.”

Baseball, 6/4/10: Cosby, Matoaca to title game

MATOACA 8, MILLS GODWIN 6

Mills Godwin coach John Marano has been around the block a few times, so don’t take the next quote lightly.

“Matoaca gets off the bus swinging the bats,” the longtime Eagles coach said. “I
knew that coming in. They have men at the plate. They don’t back down.”

The Warriors ripped off eight runs in the odd innings to halt a game Mills Godwin team to advance to the Central Region title game, which will also be played at The Diamond.

Matoaca led 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning before Godwin started its comeback.

The Eagles dropped two runs in the sixth and quickly put up two more in the seventh on Zach Mihalko‘s two-run double that had the Warriors shaky.

Though two outs were on the board, runners were on first and third, with the winning run at the dish.

But Brandon Lindsay got Conner Brown to pop out as Matoaca also earned a state Group AAA tournament berth.

COSBY 15, DOUGLAS FREEMAN 7

The nightcap was a slugfest that the Titans won handily to face Matoaca in the Central Region final.

Cosby looked to run away and hide with the game, throwing up five runs in the top of the second.

But so did Freeman, the game squad from the Colonial District.

Undaunted, Cosby threw up four runs in the third that the Rebels couldn’t answer quickly enough.

Mitchell Shifflett had a two RBI single, and Christian Hamlett knocked him in with a double of his own to make it 9-5 as Cosby continued to score to put it away.

The Titans last reached the state tournament in 2008, as region runner-up, but would like to host a home game this year.

The Rebels had a fabulous year under first-year head coach Ray Moore, taking the Colonial’s regular-season crown and finishing 19-5.

Girls soccer, 6/3/10: Cosby 4, Godwin 1

by Chip Carter
Mills Godwin Correspondent

Region player of the year Becca Wann scored three goals in leading the Cosby girls soccer team to a 4-1 win over Mills Godwin in the Central Region tournament Thursday night at Atlee High School.

Cosby advances to Friday’s championship match versus Thomas Dale, a 1-0 winner over Deep Run, and is assured of the school’s first berth in the state tournament in girls soccer.

Cosby exerted constant pressure on the Eagles’ defense almost from the beginning as Wann’s freakishly long throws created scoring opportunities near the net and crossing opportunities up the sidelines.

Wann also, as always, was a major factor in the air, finding balls in the midfield and near the net with her head.

The Titans scored the game’s first goal with 17:45 left in the half as Cosby sophomore Courtney Hook gathered a loose ball out high and wide and served it to the left side of the goal where Wann rose above everyone else and headed it into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Godwin could not mount much sustained offense but looked like it might tie the game right before halftime as senior Marie Krider hooked a nice ball across the face of the goal and away from Cosby sophomore keeper Nikki Pond. No Eagle, however, could get a solid touch and the ball and opportunity scooted away as the half ended.

After only 21 seconds of the second half, lightening stopped the contest for about 80 minutes. Upon resumption, Wann’s long sideline throw to the goal was knocked around by both teams and then hit the ground where Cosby junior Kelsey Conyers poked it through a gap and into the goal for a 2-0 lead at the 37:44 mark.

About three minutes later Wann “intercepted” a Godwin defensive clear with her head, redirecting it into the net for a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles got on the board with 27 minutes to go as senior Kelsey Carter fed junior Sarah Bellotti nicely up the sideline. Bellotti then made a nice angle pass to Krider who finished the play cutting the deficit to 3-1.

“I thought maybe we could get back in it when we scored, but we made some mental mistakes,” said Godwin assistant coach Miranda Watson.

The momentum for the Eagles was short-lived as Wann used her feet to punch in a crossing pass from Joy Grove at the 25:00 mark for her third goal and the eventual 4-1 final score.

“We played fantastic,” said Cosby first-year head coach Roger Lattimer. “Our defense played really well, and we can be tough to beat when that happens.”

The loss ended Godwin’s season at 13-5-1 and broke a long streak of state tournament appearances. The impressive high-school careers of seniors Krider, Carter, Becca Haislip, and Emily Ornelas also ended.

The group can count four Colonial District championships, two region championships, three state appearances, and last year’s state final among their accomplishments.

As she watched her players comfort and hug each other, Watson said, “We had a great season. Look at them – you really can’t ask for anything more.”

As she considered next week’s state tournament, Wann said, “I’m excited. I’m still bitter about basketball, so I want a state championship in soccer.”

Girls soccer, 6/1/10: Godwin 1, Atlee 0

by Chip Carter
Mills Godwin Correspondent

Mills Godwin sophomore forward Meghan O’Neal admitted to the frustration of a season-long scoring slump.

After a freshman season that saw O’Neal score several goals as a reserve forward, the speedy O’Neal had not been able to find the net this year.

“It seemed like I put shots everywhere but in the goal. I was freaking out,” said O’Neal.

That frustration was greatly relieved Tuesday night as O’Neal scored the game’s only goal in Godwin’s 1-0 quarterfinal Central Region tournament win over the homestanding Atlee Raiders.

O’Neal’s goal came at the 18:30 mark of the second half. Senior forward Marie Krider gathered a through ball on the right side, occupied her defender, and slid a perfect pass in front of the goal to the on-rushing O’Neal, who finished to the right of Atlee’s all-region senior keeper Brittany Hill.

Up to that point the contest between the two skilled and disciplined teams had produced play mostly in the midfield area and relatively few dangerous scoring opportunities. The Eagles came close, however, twice in the first half as sophomore Alayna Vaughan served up both opportunities.

At 19:30 mark, Vaughan’s free kick from wide left found the foot of junior Ellen Upton who hit the crossbar.

Later, just before the half Vaughan crossed a ball from the right sideline that senior Kelsey Carter redirected at the goal, but Hill made a nice save to deny the shot.

“Their keeper was phenomenal,” said Godwin assistant coach Miranda Watson of Hill, who was credited with eight saves.

Atlee’s best chances followed Godwin’s score late in the game as the Raiders pushed more players forward and the Eagles became less aggressive.

Several times Atlee forwards seemed one step away from a goal, but the ball was cleared by the defense or saved by Godwin’s sophomore keeper Jessie Ashworth, who had most of her nine saves in the games last 15 minutes.

But the Eagles held on and the game ended, advancing Godwin into Thursday’s semifinals at 5:30 versus Cosby, a 7-1 winner over Matoaca.

The semifinal and championship matches will be at Atlee.

“It was a great game between two solid teams,” said Atlee coach Bruce Lovelace.

Lovelace admitted it was a tough first round draw for both teams. “But to win the region you have to beat the best,” he said.

“I’m proud of our girls. We fought to the last minute,” said Atlee senior forward Lauren Armentrout.

In soccer, where one play so often causes delight or disappointment, it was O’Neal who came away with the game winner and the biggest smile.

“Thank God – I’d been waiting forever,” said O’Neal.

Girls soccer, 6/2/10: Dale 2, Midlothian 1

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com
(804) 240-2191

In Central Region girls soccer, the Central District is seen as weaker than the Capital, Colonial and Dominion Districts, even with Thomas Dale posting gaudy records each year.

The Knights hadn’t been able to make its unprecedented district domination into region success, until the past two years.

Dale advance to the Central Region semifinals last year, and will make a return trip in 2010 after dropping Midlothian 2-1 Wednesday afternoon in what coach John Kabler called “a huge win for the program.”

The Knights will face Deep Run, a 6-0 winner over Lee-Davis, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Atlee for a berth into the region final and a state Group AAA spot.

Midlo led 1-0 after 30 minutes of play Tuesday on a goal by Gabby Urcia.

But the rest of the suspended game was all Thomas Dale and namely Sarah Schrader.

The sophomore scored in the resumed first half on a header off a feed from Hannah Robbins, and struck again just five minutes into the second half, knifing the Trojan defense as Dale pulled the upset.

“I just knew I could dribble through them because I play with a lot of them in travel,” Schrader said. “I just tapped it to the right, hoping it would go in, and it did.”

Midlothian didn’t give up, having several opportunities left in the waning minutes.

Free kicks went wide by Richmond-bound Erin Layne.

Two corner kicks were placed in front of the goal to no avail as Dale’s defense and keeper Chrissy Dowlen (eight saves) came up large.

Baseball, 6/2/10: Matoaca 6, Manchester 4

The weather and the game didn’t look good in Matoaca’s eyes Tuesday afternoon.

But Wednesday was a new day as Matoaca rallied to top Manchester 6-4 Wednesday to advance to the Central Region semifinals.

Matoaca will face Mills Godwin Friday at The Diamond at 4:30 p.m. in the first semifinal.

The Warriors erased a 3-0 deficit that Manchester took before Wednesday’s restart.

Tuesday’s game was suspended as lightning and heavy rains belted Manchester High, sending the game to a 4:30 Wednesday restart, back at Manchester.

The Lancers got a solo home run from Ryan Morrison, and a two-run blast from Logan Toney for the margin.

The Warriors loaded the bases in the first and second innings, but Morrison fought out of both situations, as he had six strikeouts through three innings.

But Matoaca fought to win the battle of the top two teams in the area for most of the season.
