Wildcats Scratch Trojans

by Freddie Clark
DigitalSports Photographer/Contributor

Erin Anderson provided an RBI double with two outs in the top of the first inning driving in Kelly Penny, leading Deep Run to a 5-0 victory over Midlothian in the Central Region final Friday night.

Deep Run pitcher Heather Lewis continued her stellar performance in the circle, allowing two hits and striking out five in a complete-game effort in front of a stellar defense.

Deep Run needed every bit of it as Midlothian’s Krista Townsend had five strikeouts as well and the Trojans defense came up with clutch plays.

But the Wildcats delivered four runs in the seventh to give Lewis space to finish the job.

“They are aggressive. They are the same type of team we are and they will take any opportunity you give them to get the extra base; if you get thrown out you get thrown out,” Midlothian coach Denise Manuel said. “They got more runners on tonight and they did what they are supposed to do and we didn’t.”

What Deep Run was supposed to do was be one of the top teams in the Central Region.

But it seemed like the Wildcats forgot that at some point, dropping six of 10 games to end the regular campaign.

Now they’ve ran off six straight victories to claim the Colonial District and Central Region tournaments.

“I think we have something to prove. This was our goal all along and they worked toward this goal,” Deep Run coach Stu Brown said. “These girls worked hard. They work hard every day. That’s what baffled me during our losing streak is that these girls worked hard every day.”

There’s still work to be done by both teams in the state Group AAA tournament.

Deep Run will have a home game Tuesday versus Northwest runner-up Loudoun Valley.

A young Midlothian team will travel to Northwest champ Battlefield, a 1-0 winner over Loudoun Valley in its championship.

Championship is a word Midlothian didn’t have in its crosshairs at the beginning of the season, but constant improvement made it happen.

“The beginning of the season we did not know what our expectations were,” Manuel said. “We were just kind of pining along, ‘Let’s try to make the tournament.’

“We set our goals as we go along and try to get them and with the exception of tonight we did.”

Third Time The Charm

by Stephen M. Lewis

Robert Oldham missed James River‘s dream ride to the region and state title last season with a torn up hamstring.

Friday night he was Cosby’s Achilles heel, driving in five of James River’s six runs in a 6-3 victory over the Titans for the Central Region baseball crown at RF&P Park.

Both squads advance to the state Group AAA tournament which begins Tuesday.

Cosby will travel to Colonial Forge (18-8), a 13-12 victor over Albemarle (18-7) in the Northwest Region championship, for a 6:30 p.m. tilt, while James River will stay home for the second straight season, hosting Albemarle to begin defense of its state title.

It’s because of guys like Oldham, the unsung Rapids, that allowed James River to defeat Cosby for the first time in three tries.

“Those first two games that we played against them weren’t really close,” James River coach Pete Schumacher said. “It was really important for them to prove to themselves that we can beat them. We’re a totally different team.

“Robert, I asked him to lay down a bunt [Thursday] and he does it perfectly. Then he hits a home run today. He’s a bright kid. He’s a smart kid. He’s just got to relax and he did that today.”

After Cosby took a 1-0 lead on Tadd Bower‘s RBI single in the first inning, Oldham delivered a three-run shot in the top of the third inning, driving in Austin Stadler (2 for 2, two walks) and Jack Cleary.

After Carter Brown‘s groundout enabled a run to score to make it 4-1 in the sixth, Oldham stepped up with the bases full of Rapids and delivered a two-RBI double.

“The guy in front of me, Daniel Marrs, struck out,” said Oldham, answering a question about his blast. “This season we’ve been talking about picking each other up. So I got in there, thinking I’ve got to pick my boy Daniel up, so I succeeded and I’m happy about that.”

Happy? The Rapids had to be elated with the effort from junior pitcher Jake Mathews. He gave up one earned run and three hits to a vaunted Titan lineup through six innings.

However, down 6-1 Cosby put together a rally. Bower doubled, Jake Lowery singled and Ryan Parker was hit by Mathews in the back with a pitch to load the bases.

Then a Mathews offering got away, allowing Bower to score from third.

Greg Moon‘s RBI groundout scored Lowery for a 6-3 lead, bringing tension and drama to the well-manicured stadium as one out later the dangerous Ronnie Shaban strolled to the plate as the tying run.

But Mathews got Shaban to groundout to terrific shortstop Brown to set off a Rapid celebration.

“We had the right people up,” said Cosby coach Tim Lowery of the Titans’ comeback attempt. “The kids played well. Congratulations to James River.

“I think it’s been a very rewarding year. They’ve got a big picture and [the region championship] was one of the goals, but the ultimate goal is still there.”

Knights Back On Top

by Seneca Contomanolis
DigitalSports Richmond
scontomanolis@digitalsports.com

Patrick Innes wasn’t supposed to play.

A knee injury he suffered this week and then re-aggravated on Thursday against James River should have kept him on the sidelines for the Central Region championship.

But an injury could only keep the Thomas Dale captain down for so long.

Innes came off the bench and scored the tying goal and assisted on Will Bates’ winner in the 73rd minute as the Knights rallied to defeat Deep Run 2-1 on Friday at Atlee High School.

“Ten minutes into the game we were struggling a little bit and I just started to put on my stuff,” Innes said. “And I started running up and down the sidelines trying to get loose and I told [coach Mark] Fowler just let me have a run at it the last 10 minutes of the first half.

“But once they scored that first goal going into halftime I knew I wasn’t coming out and I guess the rest is history.”

Behind Innes Thomas Dale captured their third region title in four years and earned a home quarterfinal match in the state Group AAA tournament on Tuesday. The Knights won back-to-back state titles during the 2005-06 seasons.

The Wildcats, losers in the semifinals of the region tourney the past two years, will have to travel to play their match.

“We’re certainly happy to be in states,” Deep Run coach Steve Chapman said. “But truly we would have loved to win to have a home game so it is a little disappointing.”

Central Region player of the year Brian Ownby, playing with a bandage around his head because of stitches he received from a collision on Thursday, put Deep Run in front 1-0 with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Senior forward Julian Hart found Ownby with a pass streaking through the box towards the goal and Ownby was able to tap the ball over Thomas Dale keeper Bill Groben for the score.

That was one of the few bright spots for the Wildcats in the whole contest.

“It wasn’t even a good first half. We never got into a rhythm, never possessed,” Chapman said. “There was literally one minute where we connected six or eight passes.”

The Knights went on the attack in the second half as Innes, Bates, Vitto Lauretano and Gage Robertson began to create chance after chance on the offensive end.

Innes, headed to James Madison on a soccer scholarship, knotted the score up with a high, arching header eight minutes into the second half.

“The ball was played in and I remember there were a couple of defenders around me,” Innes said. “Got my head on it and went back up in the air and I just tried to head it towards the goal and luckily the goalie was a little bit off his line and it just dropped right in behind him.”

Deep Run goalie Cameron Murray kept the score even, with a couple of crucial saves down the stretch in the second half, until Innes found Bates for the game-winner with 6:30 left.

“I picked up the ball around half field and just beat one of their defenders,” Innes said. “The keeper cut off my angle really well and I couldn’t have a clean shot so I just rolled the ball far post and Will Bates was there for an easy tap in.”

The Knights, even with only one defeat, may have been unfairly overlooked during the season as Deep Run and Cosby were thought of as the top two teams in the region.

It has become very clear that Thomas Dale, like Fowler’s previous teams, is a force to be reckoned with.

“This is just outstanding,” Fowler said. “I am especially proud of these guys…they are now creating their own piece of history.”

Godwin Region Champs

 by Chris Naquin
DigitalSports Richmond

The Mills Godwin Eagles scored three first half goals against the Deep Run Wildcats to claim the girls soccer Central Region title in Friday night’s championship game at Atlee High School.

Eagles senior forward Annemarie Cole scored two goals in just ten minutes and also provided an assist for Godwin in the victory.

Mills Godwin wasted no time getting onto the score board as the first goal came just five minutes into play.

Sophomore midfielder Marie Krider chased a ball down the
sideline and delivered a cross to Cole who was able to control the ball
and turn to fire a shot into the net.

“It was a good win. We knew they were going to come out hard since we
beat them twice before and they wanted revenge,” Cole said. “We wanted
to get a goal early and Marie Krider was able to deliver a nice cross
to me and I was able to hit it into the back of the net.”

The second goal from Cole came just ten minutes later when she once
again found herself behind the Deep Run defense and put the ball into
the back of the net giving the Eagles a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Godwin freshman midfielder Ellen Upton scored the third and final goal of the game for the Eagles with seven minutes left to play in the half.

Upton got onto the end of a beautiful corner kick by Cole and headed
the ball into the goal.

Down 3-0 at halftime Deep Run did not give up.

In the second half, Deep Run sophomore forward Rachel Powers made some excellent runs up top for the Wildcats, coming dangerously close to scoring several times.

In the end, Godwin’s defense held strong and kept the match a shutout.

Colonial Showdown

by Chris Naquin
DigitalSports Richmond

The Mills Godwin Eagles and the Deep Run Wildcats, will meet in the girls soccer Central Region final on Friday night at Atlee High School.

This will be the third meeting this year between the two Colonial District rivals.

The Eagles are 2-0 against the Wildcats this year, beating them 3-1 during the regular season and 3-0 in the district title game.

Deep Run Topples Titans

Deep Run is coming off of a very impressive 3-1 win over the Cosby Titans in the first semifinal match on Thursday night.

The Wildcats managed to score two second half goals to give them the win.

Just three minutes into the second half, junior midfielder Amy Turner found the back of the net to give the Wildcats the lead.

Deep Run scored again with 24 minutes left to play in regulation.

Sophomore forward Rachel Powers got her name onto the score card, when she was able to deflect a shot into the upper corner of the net giving Deep Run a 3-1 lead.

Cosby created some good opportunities of their own but could not finish.

Freshman sweeper Chaney LaReau played excellent at the back for the Wildcats as she broke down many of the Titans attacks.

Eagles Take It In Second Half

Mills Godwin defeated James River 2-1 in the second semifinal match.

Both teams were aggressive from the start and created some dangerous opportunities.

The Rapids looked like they were going to take the early lead when junior forward Felicia Powers headed a cross to the back post but was denied by a diving Lindsey Rowe who kept the game scoreless heading into halftime.

The Eagles got onto the score board first when a controversial penalty kick was awarded to Godwin 15 minutes into the second half.

Junior midfielder Anne Lumpkin was fouled in the box and converted on her penalty kick to go up 1-0.

Just minutes later, senior forward Annemarie Cole blasted a shot from 18 yards out into the goal to increase the Eagles lead to two.

James River found the back of the net a minute later.

Sophomore Nicole Fulk got onto the end of a long through ball and first timed it past Rowe into the net.

With time running out the Rapids desperately pushed numbers forward in an attempt to tie the game but were denied as the Eagles took the win.

The Dominion Rules

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

In February, when bats started making that oh so sweet ping noise and gloves began popping, Cosby was ranked first in the DigitalSports Top 10, James River second.

Things held to form Thursday evening as both of the Dominion District powers won their semifinal baseball matchups to earn that pivotal state Group AAA tournament berth and a Central Region title game appearance.

Before the game, Ronnie Shaban said he didn’t know much about Mills Godwin. He just wanted to get that state tournament berth.

His actions spoke louder than his words as he led off Cosby’s half of the first inning with a home run.

Fired up, the Titans continued their torrid hitting as Bradley Shaban singled to move his brother’s courtesy runner, region 100-meter champion Mitchell Shifflett, to second.

A sacrifice by Dustin Sollars moved the runners, and Tadd Bower‘s grounder was enough to get Shifflett in for a 2-0 advantage.

Jake Lowery then put up an RBI single and Bower scored on a passed ball for a 4-0 advantage.

Many teams usually fold against the Titans after that, but not the youthful Eagles.

Starting four sophomores and a freshman at pitcher in lefty Matt Lees, Godwin responded with back-to-back home runs from Reed Gragnani and Nick Caporale off of the hard-throwing Shaban.

“I thought our kids played well,” Godwin coach John Marano said. “We got some home runs, they got some home runs. It was a tough game in that respect.

“We started four sophomores and a freshman against a bunch of men and we out hit them.”

Godwin had nine hits, and Cosby had eight, but the Titans scored in the fourth off of heads-up base running from football standout Josh Wilburn to go up 5-2.

An error in the top of the fifth allowed Godwin to reduce the advantage to 5-3. Then Caporale drilled a Shaban offering, but Sollars made a great sliding catch in center to end the threat.

Then it was the Ryan Parker Show. He drilled a three-run screamer to left-center field to put Cosby up 8-3.

Then in the top of the sixth, with Eagles sitting on first and second, he nabbed Eric Payne‘s liner to end the threat.

“I don’t know if you saw me in the third-base box,” Marano said. “But I did a 360 [when he caught that ball]. Lucky I didn’t turn my ankle.”

Said Parker: “I barely saw it. I didn’t even know if I caught it or not. It was a shot.”

Now Cosby’s gets its third shot at James River, the defending region and state champion.

The Rapids took down the Patrick Henry Patriots 11-1 led by pitcher Austin Stadler. He climbed the mound and pitched the entire contest, striking out 10 Patriots, scattering six hits.

James River stroked two home runs, one each from Austin McGowan and Eamon Schwartz.

McGowan’s capped a four-run second for the Rapids. Schwartz’s solo shot came in the fourth.

All the while, Daniel Marrs (three hits) was terrific at the plate, and Ian Harvey was all over the base paths with three runs and four RBI.

Though the Rapids had four errors, only one hurt that Ryan Smith took advantage of in the first inning on Jordan Fox’s single. JR’s defense was solid all evening behind Stadler.

“Just trying to play good team baseball,” James River coach Pete Schumacher said. “We know you at least have a fighting chance if you do that. It was fun to watch.”

The third meeting between the Southside teams should be fun to watch as well, with a home state playoff game on the line.

“There’s great baseball in the Dominion District and the Central Region,” Tim Lowery said. “It’s going to be fun and I’m going to soak it in and enjoy every bit of it.”

Extra Innings Needed

by Seneca Contomanolis
DigitalSports Richmond
scontomanolis@digitalsports.com

Runs were few and far between but innings were aplenty in the Central Region softball semifinals.

Deep Run needed 10 innings to defeat Cosby 2-1 while Midlothian topped Prince George 1-0 in eight innings on Thursday.

The Wildcats and Trojans will meet Friday at 7 p.m. at L.C. Bird for the region championship and both teams have earned spots in the state Group AAA tournament.

Deep Run Outlasts Cosby In 10

Kelly Foate drove in the tying run in the fifth inning and then scored the winning run in the tenth for Deep Run.

“Amazing, this is all we wanted the whole season and we had to get the job done,” Foate said. “It was a total team effort. We couldn’t have done it without each other. We were backing each other up the whole time and we had a great defense and a great offense.”

Foate walked with one out in the tenth inning and Taylor Blankenship bunted to move her to second.

Cosby third baseman Morgan Reynold’s throw was high and went over second baseman Megan Bell-Hill’s glove allowing Blankenship to reach safely and Foate to move to third base.

Kelly Penny then hit a grounder to Titans shortstop Heather Sink who looked at Foate and threw to first base. On the throw Foate broke for home and slide safely across the plate as a wild throw home never reached catcher Taylor Hall.

“Go, go, run. Get down and run,” said Foate of what she was thinking. “I was told to run and I went. It’s awesome.”

Wildcats pitcher Heather Lewis (five strikeouts) and Cosby pitcher Whitney Haller kept the game scoreless until the fifth inning when Haller drove in Morgan Reynolds with a double.

Deep Run responded in the bottom half with Foate hitting an RBI single to score Jena Baldaino.

Haller, the Central Region pitcher of the year, struck out eight. Cosby’s Brittney Burgess had two hits and the Titans finished with six hits but had none after the sixth.

The game came down to who would blink first.

“We’ve been in that situation all year and eventually it’s going to catch up to you,” Cosby coach Ray Jeter said. “Nobody’s going to be perfect, the girls are human not machines.”

Wildcats coach Stu Brown credited his team’s dedication to training as part of their success in tight, long contests.

“The girls lived in the weight room,” Brown said. “I think it is showing physically, mentally and emotionally. They are in shape and peaking at the right time.”

Edmunds Sends Midlothian To Final

Midlothian catcher Rudy Edmunds scored on a pass ball against Prince George in the eighth inning ending a game that was a scoreless pitching battle up to that point.

“I was really nervous but coach [Denise] Manuel had already told me I had to go in sliding if it was a pass ball,” Edmunds said. “And she [Prince George pitcher Lauren Vinson] fumbled it so I just slid in hard.”

Edmunds also had three singles, the only three hits the Trojans could produce against Vinson (12 strikeouts).

Midlothian pitcher Krista Townsend was even more untouchable giving up only two hits and striking out 19.

“She didn’t even know,” said Denise Manuel of Townsend’s strikeout total. “She was just doing her job, taking it inning by inning.”

Edmunds led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a ground out.

After a strikeout and with Brandi Clark at the plate a pitch scooted by Royals catcher Ashley Lowe.

Edmunds started for home, hesitated and then went full steam ahead towards the plate. Lowe got to the ball and tossed it to Vinson but the sophomore couldn’t handle it and Edmunds slid in safely.

“It’s their read,” Denise Manuel said. “They have the green light, it’s their judgement.”

Prince George’s two hits came from region player of the year Caitlen Manning and Taylor Worley.

“We certainly think we had an opportunity to continue on,” Royals coach Pat Waguespack said. “We had the defense and pitching but we didn’t put the ball in play. We took a lot of pressure off of them.”

Last year the Trojans lost to eventual region champion Hanover in the semifinals. Now they have a chance to take the crown after starting the season with a new player at every position and no seniors.

“Especially with a young group we try to keep them loose,” Denise Manuel said. “Let them enjoy the moment. At the beginning of the season we just wanted to finish in the top four of our district.”

Cosby, James River Roll

by Ben Dejarnette (Atlee H.S.)
DigitalSports Student Correspondent

The Lady Titans controlled the game from start to finish in a 3-0 girls soccer win over Atlee in the Central Region quarterfinals.

Cosby wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, as Alli Greene found the net in the opening minutes of play.

“It’s always good to start out strong and set the bar for the rest of the game,” Greene said. “I feel like [the early goal] helped a lot.”

Lindsey Carnes scored the Titans’ second goal before Becca Wann sealed the deal with a late finish.

The Raiders had a fair number of chances in the second half, but struggled to keep their shots under the crossbar. The loss will be the final high-school game for Atlee’s eight seniors, including Kristin Lescalleet, who will play for the University of Richmond this fall.

Cosby, ranked No. 2 in the final DigitalSports Top 10 Poll, will now go on to face No. 6 Deep Run in the Central Region semifinals on Thursday night at Atlee.

The winner will earn a spot in the region final as well as a state tournament berth.

Boys Soccer: Bald Opportunity

For sophomore Dylan Bowman, James River’s 3-1 win over Atlee in the Central Region quarterfinals had extra significance.

While the Rapids moved one step closer to the regional final, Bowman moved one step closer to losing his curly locks.

“We’ve been trying to get him to shave his head all season,” senior Chris Vonier said. “We’ve got to win tomorrow and then shave it. It’ll be a good party for us.”

With hair in tact, Bowman got the Rapids out in front with a powerful strike from the penalty spot.

James River had forced several strong saves from Atlee goalkeeper Mike McCabe before Shane Atkins’ mistimed slide tackle in the box gave Bowman the opportunity to fire home the penalty kick.

“[The first goal] is very important. It takes the stress out of it,” James River head coach Eric Schlueter said. “We’ve had a lot of trouble scoring this year, so once we get a goal in there we tend to relax a little bit and play more of our game and not panic so much.”

The Rapids kept the momentum going into halftime, as Daniel Miranian’s 26th minute goal gave the Rapids a 2-0 lead at the break.

The second half was marked by physical play from both sides, as yellow cards outnumbered goals.

Nevertheless, Jack Baxter fought his way into the score column, following up a Garrett Dayton shot to give James River its third and final goal.

Less than a minute later, Atlee was awarded a penalty kick, which Ben Anderson coolly deposited in the left corner to cap the scoring.

Bowman and James River will now advance to the Central Region semifinals to face the winner of Wednesday’s Douglas Freeman vs. Thomas Dale quarterfinal.

Though the team surely has plenty of motivation, the thought of a bald Bowman can only help.

Midlo Tops Lee-Davis

The Midlothian Tojans defeated the Lee-Davis Confederates 2-1 in Tuesday night’s Central Region quarterfinal game.

Lee-Davis scored first in the top of the fourth inning, to put the Confederates up 1-0.

The Trojans answered right back in the bottom of the fourth, to tie the game at one.

Midlothian took the lead when the Trojans loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh after the rain delay.

Jessica Poe, who went 1 for 2 in the game, scored the winning run when Suzanne Spencer (1 for 2) drew a walk with the bases-loaded to give Midlothian the 2-1 win over Lee-Davis.

Midlothian’s pitcher Krista Townsend struck out nine in the game.

Softball: Cosby Over Hanover

The Cosby Titans defeated the Hanover Hawks 2-1 in Tuesday night’s Central Region quarterfinal game at Hanover.

Second baseman Megan Bell-Hill smacked a two-run triple in the top of the third inning bringing in Heather Sink and Brittney Burgess to take a 2-0 lead which would be all the Titans would need.

Hanover’s only run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning off of Courtney Long’s RBI single.

Cosby pitcher Whitney Haller was outstanding on the mound as she allowed only five hits and struck out 15.

Lisa Puryear also pitched a good game for the Hawks, striking out six and only allowing six hits.

Baseball: James River Too Much For Hanover

James River proved to be too much for Hanover in Tuesday night’s Central Region quarterfinal showdown at Hanover High School.

The James River Rapids defeated the Hanover Hawks 4-0 due to some excellent pitching by the Rapids’ Daniel Marrs, who threw six innings of shut out ball.

The Rapids scored their first run of the game in the top of the second inning.

Ian Harvey’s RBI single brought in Jack Cleary.

The Rapids scored again in the top of the sixth and seventh innings scoring three more runs.

Marrs was able to knock in a run in the sixth with a single bringing in Austin McGowan to go up 2-0.

Immediately after, Michael Granger took home off of a wild pitch thrown by Hanover’s Jake Mayers to put the Rapids up three.

The final run of the game was scored by the Rapids in the top of the seventh inning.

McGowan hit an RBI single off of Hanover’s Aaron Adkins bringing in Garret Bardenheirer.
