PG Gets Clutch Hit

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

When pitchers like Lauren Vinson and Megan Williams are in the circle, hits, walks and base runners are at a premium.

So it was no surprise that Monacan and Prince George had goose eggs through 7 1/2 innings Friday; that’s 45 outs with no one crossing the plate.

That was until with two outs, Royals star Caitlen Manning dribbled a Williams pitch down the third base line.

She beat a throw by standout third baseman Brianna Bertovich, which enabled Krissy Fried to score from third, giving the Royals a 1-0 victory over the Chiefs.

“It just came down to the right play at the right time,” Prince George coach Pat Waguespack said. “I’m just glad it was us.”

The way Vinson and Williams were pitching, it didn’t look like anyone would score.

Vinson, a PG sophomore, struck out 16 Chiefs.

Monacan got one hit off of Vinson, when Lauren Gooden smacked a single with two outs in the seventh.

But Vinson struck out the next batter to end the threat.

“I guess their bats just weren’t as on as they usually are,” Vinson said. “It was pretty tough to maintain.”

Williams had seven strikeouts, but was just as tough.

The Royals managed a paltry four hits against the ace, only two of which left the infield. Manning, headed to James Madison, had two of them.

Her biggest came when the International Tie-Breaker Rule was put into play. That puts a runner at second with no outs for each team at the beginning of the eighth or ninth inning.

Monacan couldn’t touch Vinson, as she struck out the side. Prince George looked headed for a similar fate because of stellar Chief defense.

Taylor Whorley, who had one of the hits against Williams, moved Fried to third with a groundout to second base.

Then Ashley Lowe grounded to Bertovich at third. She cleverly kept Fried at third before throwing out Lowe at first for the second out.

That set up Manning’s heroics.

“They executed down to the end when they had to,” Monacan coach Billy Lewis said. “We did not. The kids are disappointed.

“Megan pitched a good game and the kids played well. This will prepare us for the district games.”

Currin, Skyhawks Beat Indians

by Chris Naquin
DigitalSports Richmond

Ashley Currin pitched a complete game for the L.C. Bird Skyhawks only allowing one hit in a 4-1 defeat of the Northumberland Indians.

The Skyhawks jumped on the score board first, off of a sacrifice bunt by right fielder Becca Sprouse bringing home second baseman Jessica Gerrald to go up 1-0 heading into the second inning.

In the third inning, Nothumberland would score their only run of the game as third baseman Shannon Lewis hit a ball into right field bringing in center fielder Kristen Walker to tie the game at 1-1.

Later in the inning, Currin hit a RBI single to bring in first baseman Jamie Booterbaugh to take the lead 2-1.

L.C. Bird scored two more runs in the game.

One came from left fielder Nicole Butler who hit a triple and then stole home after a wild pitch, taking a 3-1 lead over the Indians.

The final run of the game came from L. C. Bird’s Madison Bradley.

Bradley stole home in the fifth inning off of a wild pitch thrown by the Indians increasing the Skyhawks lead to 4-1.

Currin was excellent on the mound, as she shut out the Indians the rest of the game not allowing another hit.

Four Games, Four Wins

by Seneca Contomanolis
DigitalSports Richmond

It has been a pretty good couple of days for Matoaca.

The Warriors defeated host Atlee 16-9 on Thursday for their fourth win in two days of the Spring Break Blast.

Matoaca, ranked ninth in the DigitalSports Top 10, defeated Douglas Freeman and Hermitage on Wednesday and Lee-Davis earlier Thursday.

“This is pretty good momentum heading into the district season,” Matoaca’s Matt Gwaltney said. “The best thing is not to let our heads get too big.”

Gwaltney, the designated hitter, went 2 for 4 with two RBI after going 4 for 4 with two homers and five RBI against the Confederates.

Sophomore Austin Kilbourne was 3 for 4 and had a home run, two doubles and four RBI and David Palisano was 3 for 3 with an RBI for Matoaca (5-1).

“Just keep my weight back, feel my hands, hit the ball, try to hit it as hard as I could,” said Kilbourne of his at-bats.

The Warriors got on the board right away as Gwaltney drove in two and Kilborne one in the top of the first.

Atlee’s Taylor Sandefur (2 for 3) had an RBI in the bottom of the inning but Matoaca scored three more in the third to take a commanding 6-1 advantage for pitcher Corey Ramsey.

A two-RBI single by Gwaltney, a RBI double by Joey Andrews and a three-run homer courtesy of Kilbourne in the fifth pushed the lead to 12-2. That looked to be more than enough for Ramsey, who had been cruising on the mound.

The Raiders (3-3) responded, though, with a grand slam by Ryan Kontra in the bottom half of the inning, but that would be as close as they would get as the Warriors would go ahead 16-6 in the top of the seventh.

Atlee pinch hitter John Michael Sparagna would close out the scoring with a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

“They played hard, played well,” said Atlee coach Will Hicks of his team which went 2-2. “We saw some things we need to work on but that is what this tournament is for.”

Matoaca coach Fred Stoots also thought the tournament served its purpose.

“It was good to play quality teams and to see quality baseball,” Stoots said. “I think it is good because you are playing good teams and throwing people who normally wouldn’t get the chance to pitch.”
