Midlothian vs. James River, 10/28

James River topped Midlothian 3-1 to move to Thursday’s Dominion District final versus Cosby.

Midlothian, the fourth seed, tried to pull the upset after rallying for a third game win.

But James River was too much down the stretch.

Katie Hudencial – Oct. 28

– Katie Hudencial is a senior setter for the defending Capital District
champion Hanover Hawks. She is a terrific setter that sometimes get overshadowed
by the powerful hitting Kristin Carpenter, but is a dandy player in her own
right. From Colorado, she is a devoted Denver Broncos fan. Her blog will appear
here consistently.

Hey everybody! This week is the beginning of postseason, and I am so excited! We play at Lee-Davis on Wednesday against Atlee. So everyone should come out to Capital District Finals!

Last week, we played Highland Springs at home, and that was our last regular season game, and that was fun. I got to play libero, and it was a different experience, but I really liked it!

It was fun to just focus on defense and passing instead of setting and defense.

We have just been working hard at practice and honing our skills for the upcoming matches.

On Friday night, the football team played Atlee and it was a sweet game since we won 35-0!

Then Saturday morning, I left really early to go to my college visit in Los Angeles, CA. The weather was phenomenal, since it was rainy and windy in Mechanicsville. Well everyone should come out on Wednesday!

Ben Dejarnette – Oct. 28

– Ben Dejarnette is an senior distance runner for the Atlee Raiders,
excelling in fall, winter and spring seasons. He is set to run for a major
college or university after his 2008 graduation and is also a DigitalSports
intern. His blog will appear here consistently.

Finally, Rolling Again

It’s been a wild two weeks since my Manhattan disappointment. After returning from Columbia, I struggled to shake off an intestinal problem that had been bugging me for a few weeks.

That Friday I went to the doctor for some tests, one of which checked for intestinal parasites, a problem that wrecked my cross country season a year ago.

I ended up getting unofficial results the very next day. At the Georgetown Prep Classic I comfortably ran a personal-best 15:04 5k, breaking the course record by almost 30 seconds. To cap an excellent afternoon, we won as a team by 44 points. I was feeling better and knew nothing could be too seriously wrong.

The official test results two days later confirmed I was free of parasites, but did show a deficiency in vitamin D. It should take about a month to build my vitamin D levels up to the ideal range, but already I feel great.

The Capital District meet took place last Wednesday, and the Atlee boys brought home the title for a third straight year! I broke my own Capital District meet record, winning in 15:54.

Next up is the Central Region Championships on Nov. 1 at Pole Green Park. The team is looking strong as we shoot for our first regional cross country title.

The competition will be tough, with Douglas Freeman, Midlothian and others vying for the same title. We will need big showings from Christian Snider and Devon Richardson at our No. 5/6 spots.

Come out to Pole Green Park Saturday and cheer us on. The boys’ varsity race will go off at 4:10.

See you next week, Ben D.

Hanover shuts out Atlee

by Ben Dejarnette
Atlee Student Correspondent

The Hanover Hawks scored early, late and often in a 35-0 win over county-rival Atlee Friday night.

Hanover’s offensive unit racked up 333 yards on the night, often starting with strong field position thanks to excellent special teams play.

Kenny Fryman opened the scoring with a 40-yard TD run on the team’s first drive. On their next possession, Deane Cheatham rammed home a 1-yard score on 4th down.

After a stalemated second quarter, the Hawks put the game out of reach with rushing TDs by Cheatham and Trey Facison, as well as a TD pass from Josh Wells to Carlton Davis.

“I thought we struggled a lit bit offensively in the first half but we came back in the second half and changed things up,” Hanover coach Josh Just said. “We came out with a very good second half offensively. I thought special teams played outstanding all night.”

Meanwhile, the Hawks defense was dominant, holding the Raiders to just 65 yards total offense. In a microcosm of Atlee’s season, quarterback Dylan Garthright overthrew one of his only open receivers all night, for what would have been a walk-in touchdown.

“It just wasn’t our night,” Atlee coach Roscoe Johnson said. “Things didn’t go our way and [Hanover] played well tonight.”

With the loss, Atlee falls to 0-4 in the Capital, 1-7 overall with games against Armstrong and Lee-Davis still to play. The Raiders will need wins from both to match last year’s 3-7 mark.

Hanover, ranked 10th in the latest Fox/DigitalSports Top 10 poll, improves to 5-3, 2-2 in the Capital. They will face tough tests in Lee-Davis and Henrico to close out their season.

With wins, the Hawks should again make the Division 5 playoffs, where they won the Central Region title a year ago. However, Just is taking nothing for granted.

“We’ve got a big game coming up with Lee-Davis. They are a tough, physical team that regardless of records they’re going to come out and play us their best,” Just said. “It’s going to be a pretty good fight next week between the both teams…it’ll be tough.”

Springers find offense

by Stephen M. Lewis

When did Highland Springs turn into a big-play offense?

Friday night at Lee-Davis.

The Springers registered five long touchdowns, all of 60 yards or more, to topple homestanding Lee-Davis 41-14.

Highland Springs’ offense struggled at the start of the season as the defense carried the load.

But the Springers (5-0 Capital, 5-3), ranked fifth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, have started to blossom since QB JaQuan Burchette has stepped under center.

He handed off to J.J. Saunders on the game’s first play and the junior burned Lee-Davis for a 60-yard score and a 6-0 lead.

HS stopped Lee-Davis and handed it back to Saunders (seven carries, 157 yards; two interceptions on defense). This time he went 87 yards for a score. Burchette’s conversion pass to Marcellus Carter made it 14-0.

A Lee-Davis three-and-out led to Burchette faking to Saunders and going 71 yards for a score of his own. Andrew Compton‘s extra-point made it 21-0.

Three plays, 218 yards, three touchdowns, 11 Confederates in disbelief.

“We were shell-shocked,” Lee-Davis coach Jason Meade said. “We thought they were a better football team. The moment we believe we are a good football team, we’ll be better for it. The next 22 minutes were good.”

Sure was. The Confederates (2-2, 3-5) began to slow down the Springers and put in a score of their own, as Phillip Gardner hit T.J. Harvey on a two-yad TD pass.

Harvey set up the goal-to-go situation with a 48-yard pass to Justin Becker (five catches, 121 yards) after Gardner threw him a backwards pass.

But the second half had more Highland Springs big plays to come courtesy Burchette and Clarence Hill.

Backed up on their own 10-yard line on third-and-10, Burchette threw a rope to Hill. He quickly turned and found daylight, receiving nice blocking from fellow receiver Melquan Weston and taking it 90 yards to the house.

Hill wasn’t done.

After Harvey (six catches, 54 yards, two TDs) caught a 20-yard TD from Gardner (16 for 37, 178 yards, two TDs, four interceptions) to pull Lee-Davis within 14, Hill got open for a scrambling Burchette, caught the pass and raced 61 yards for another score.

“I was just keeping the play alive on the last one,” said Hill, who registered four catches for 177 yards and the two long scores. “We practice scramble drill, so every time he was on the run I just came back to the ball.”

Said Meade: “It’s a loss but it doesn’t hurt as much as some of the other losses. We held our own except for the big plays. That’s on us as coaches.”

The Springer defense did its normal thing, shutting down the Confederates’ running game as the talented Tucker Walton (14 carries, 10 yards) found no room with Rashad Winston and Derrick Hopkins at defensive tackle, and a crew of linebackers flowing to the ball.

Highland Springs picked Gardner four times, two by Saunders at cornerback, one by safety Delante Rowe and another by Hopkins reading a screen pass like an elementary book.

The Springers were impressive.

“I am encouraged by how the offense played,” Highland Springs coach Loren Johnson said. “I think I’m more encouraged by how the team played altogether. In the second quarter, we kind of got stagnant and got a little dry.

“But the team bounced back after halftime, which we didn’t do last week against Atlee. We really wanted to put emphasis on finishing the game, and I think we really did that.”
