Hopewell Post 146 got strong pitching from David Sebera and Jackie Bradley powered the offense as Post 146 defeated Midlothian Post 186 11-7 in the first round of the American Legion, District 11 double-elimination tournament.

Sebera went six innings and allowed three runs and also had three hits and an RBI as Post 146 took advantage of five Midlothian errors on Thursday night at Rockwood Park.
Bradley went 2 for 4 with a double and triple, scored four runs and had three RBI.

The South Carolina-bound center fielder showed his defensive ability in the third inning when he ran down a deep drive in the gap with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Post 146, the fifth seed, will meet top-seeded South Richmond Post 137 on Friday at 7 p.m. at L.C. Bird. Post 186 will host Henrico Post 125 at Rockwood Park at the same time.

Ryan Bradshaw, Adam Capps (3 for 5, double), Jackson Freeman and Brent Atkkison added an RBI each for Hopewell.

Ryan Mallory hit a two-run homer for fourth-seeded Midlothian but it came in the ninth inning with two out. Josh Alford had three hits and scored two runs and Blaine Jones (3 for 5, triple), Ryan Barto and James Lawreny all had one RBI.

Three runs in the seventh inning and four in the eighth helped lock the game up late for Post 146.

In the seventh Hopewell scored all their runs with two outs. With the bases loaded Post 186 pitcher Jake Tuzzo balked in a run, gave up an RBI single and then threw a wild pitch to allow a run to score.

Atkinson’s RBI single came in an eighth inning that also featured a Bradley two RBI triple. Bradley scored on the play when the throw to third went off his foot and into the outfield.

Big fourth leads Post 201

by Stephen M. Lewis

Powhatan Post 201’s playoff season started off on the right foot, as the team full of James River players took down West End Post 361 6-1 Thursday night at J.R. Tucker High School.

Post 201 will face the winner of the Post 175 and Post 284B matchup Friday, while Post 361 will face the loser in a survival game Friday in the American Legion, District 11 double-elimination tournament.

Powhatan, the No. 6 seed, got things rolling as catcher Jack Cleary drilled a leadoff home run in the second inning to go ahead 1-0.

“He just threw it right there for me,” Cleary said. “I just sat back and did what I could with it.”

Glen Allen responded getting the bases loaded against DigitalSports player of the year Austin Stadler.

Then Lee Jones smacked an RBI single to knot the game at one.

It was all Powhatan from there, especially in the fourth inning.

Robert Oldham delivered an RBI single to drive in Hunter Gordon to take a 2-1 lead.

That’s all Post 201 would need, but it added three more runs.

Carter Brown singled, knocking in Cleary, who doubled earlier in the inning.

Oldham then scored on a wild pitch, and Ian Harvey provided an RBI sacrifice fly as Powhatan held a commanding 5-1 lead.

Stadler settled in and kept West End off balance, as Post 361 left a bunch of runners stranded.

Gordon replaced Stadler in the sixth and pitched four innings of shutout ball.

Deep Run rising senior R.C. Orlan took the loss, but throw out the fourth inning and he pitched a good game.

Post 201’s squad is full of James River’s state championship team.

They are a long way away from that type of success on the Legion level, but the potential is there.

“We just need to keep our arms fresh,” Cleary said. “If we can keep winning these games we can get a couple of days off, getting our pitching back together. We have a couple of guys that are on vacation.”

DigitalSports Feature: Ricardo Lipscomb back home

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

When Ricardo Lipscomb left Matoaca he was known as a bull’s-eye sharpshooter from deep.

Nearly a couple of years later, Lipscomb still shoots the lights out of a gymnasium, but the six-footer has developed into the consummate point guard.

Lipscomb had two successful stints at Harford Community College in Maryland, leading his level in assists at 12.3 per game. He added 13 points per contest as well.

His play helped him come back home, as Lipscomb will play for Virginia State, a Division II and CIAA member. So what helped his evolution?

“When I first got there, our two-guard was our main scorer,” Lipscomb said. “It was either pass or be on the bench. I had to be a pass-first point guard.”

His freshman numbers were more than respectable, averaging 13 points and six assists per game before his passing prowess doubled in his sophomore season.

“I went from a scoring point guard to a true point guard,” Lipscomb said.

And Lipscomb grew from a regular high-school kid to a college adult. No student-athlete wants to go to junior-college, but the route helped Lipscomb.

“It really helped me grow as a person,” the 20-year-old said. “You never know what your character is until you get away from home.”

Now the Tri-City Summer League newcomer of the year is back home, getting ready to run the show for the Trojans.

It was the same teams with the same result in this season’s Tri-City Summer League title game.

Wallace Express defeated DTLR/Cosmopolitan Lounge 129-108 on Thursday night.

Behind Tarik Wallace‘s game-high 34 points Wallace Express handed DTLR/Cosmopolitan the second-place trophy for the second straight year.

Wallace Express went up by as many as 28 points late in the third quarter in front of a packed house at George Wythe High School.

“We went out wanting to turn up our defense,” Tarik Wallace said. “We had a ten-point lead at halftime but we wanted to turn up the intensity and discourage them a little bit.”

The squad featuring NBA forward Ben Wallace (Cleveland Cavaliers) went on a 26-8 run over the first seven minutes of the third period.

Darius Hargrove poured in 27 points for Wallace Express, Wayne Wallace had 18, Bo Jones 14 and Robert Johnson 12.

DTLR/Cosmo led early in the game and only trailed by four after the first quarter but once the Wallace Express advantage stretched to 28 the closest DTLR/Cosmo would get again would be 13 points.

Chris Greene scored a team-high 33 points, 20 coming in the fourth period, and Tyree Evans had 32 points for DTLR/Cosmo.

Tarik Wallace, a George Wythe alumnus, was on fire from the outside dropping six 3-pointers and scoring 13 points in the second quarter.

“Once I hit my first shot I knew it was going to be a good night,” Tarik Wallace said.

The all-Tri-City team was announced before the contest. Luqman Jaaber (Geoff McDonald and Associates), Aaron Mitchell (ASSIST), Jones, Travis McKie (BYC Entertainment), and Evans were selcted.

Jaaber was named the most valuable player while Ricardo Lipscomb (Fete International) was honored as newcomer of the year.

Wallace Express will come back next summer trying to three-peat as champions, something they have already accomplished in previous seasons.

“We are looking forward to doing it again next year,” Tarik Wallace said.

Woolridge Headed To PSU

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

Three years ago, playing volleyball at the highest collegiate level was the last thing on Mallory Woolridge‘s mind.

“I thought I was just going to do it as recreation,” Woolridge said. “Then I fell in love with it.”

She’s fell in love and in a way, Woolridge just got engaged to the sport, committing to defending national champion Penn State recently.

The 6-2 middle who can touch the 10-foot, six-inch mark (six inches over a regulation basketball rim) will get a five-year full scholarship, a rare occurrence in volleyball.

“It’s definitely an honor,” Woolridge said. “It’s awesome. I don’t know how to put it into words.”

PSU seems to be combing the Central Region of the best lady volleyball players, as Woolridge will join Hanover star Kristin Carpenter, who is a 2009 Penn State recruit.

Now Woolridge joins the fold, though it looked as though volleyball would be the last thing she would do in college.

“I didn’t think I was ever going to be good,” Woolridge said. “I was awful.”

Three years of club ball and two years with state Group AAA champion Deep Run later, Woolridge was a hot commodity.

Any school who was any good was wondering how to get Woolridge on its campus.

Coaches even flew in from different corners of the United States just to see Woolridge practice, including renowned Florida coach Mary Wise.

Wise nabbed the top-ranked recruiting class for the upcoming season in the nation, according to PrepVolleyball.com, but didn’t get Woolridge. She was a Nittany Lion through and through.

“I didn’t know anything about the school,” Woolridge said of PSU. “I visited during the region final. After that visit I fell in love with it. I went up for another visit to hang out with the girls. It was awesome. I didn’t want to leave. That was just where I wanted to be.

“Even if I didn’t want to play volleyball, I would want to go there. [At tournaments] so many colleges were watching. I didn’t care until I saw Penn State. I just got so excited. It was definitely flattering.”
