Baseball, 3/20: Benedictine jumps Collegiate

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com
(804) 240-2191

GOOCHLAND – Four years is a long time, especially when you’ve been losing to a rival every single season, every single meeting.

Benedictine ended Collegiate‘s baseball domination on a beautiful, but crisp Friday afternoon, dispatching of the Cougars 10-2 at the impeccable Sam Newell Baseball Field at the Robins Campus.

“It’s a great thing. I’ve played football also,” Cadets shortstop Will Swoope said. “It’s been four years since we’ve beat them in football or baseball.

“So it’s good to get out here and get on top early.”

Benedictine, now 2-0 on the young season, put up four runs in the second and third inning.

Swoope had a two-run single in the second inning to get things going.

A sac fly from Derek Bushey made it 5-0 in the third. Guy Hatch followed with an RBI single. Then Chris Hogan got into the act, launching a high fly ball that got lost in the bright sun as the Cougars missed it.

7-0 Cadets.

Hogan scored on a passed ball shortly after as Benedictine held a commanding 8-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning.

The Cougars went down in order as four-year starter Mike Goldberg was on his way to a four-inning, three-hit, six-strikeout performance.

“I spotted my fastball well, early,” said Goldberg, who was also 3 for 3 at the plate with a run. “My breaking ball was working. I did have a little problem with my change-up, so I kind of had to go to a two-pitch sequence.

“I worked well with my catcher, Chris Dyer, probably one of the best catchers in the area.”

The Cadets resemble one of the best teams in the area, as Marc Rosen (2 for 4, RBI, run) drove in Goldberg in the fourth, and Zach Matthews scored on a Collegiate balk.

Benedictine’s 10-run lead threatened the slaughter rule, but the young Cougars and first-year coach Andrew Slater got a run in the fourth and sixth to make it a full game.

“We’re just extremely inexperienced,” said Slater, a 1996 Collegiate graduate and former player at the University of Richmond (196-97) and Auburn (1999-2000). “We just want them to keep working and to have energy.

“For our first time out on the field, I saw a lot of positives.”

Girls soccer, 3/19: Krider’s goal enough for Eagles

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com
(804) 240-2191

New coach, same old Mills Godwin girls soccer team.

In her first year taking over for Rob White, former Godwin star Ali Toole (formerly Ali Wolfe) has the Eagles looking like one of the Central Region’s elite after a 1-0 victory over Cosby in a nice nondistrict contest Thursday night.

Marie Krider was the game’s long goal scorer, depositing Ellen Upton‘s pass with about 29 minutes past in the first half.

“It was a really great ball by Ellen,” Krider said. “I just settled it well and was able to get it past [Cosby freshman keeper Nikki Pond], who had been really good and been getting a lot of saves and it was nice to get one past her.”

That was the point where it seemed like the Eagles took control of the contest.

The first 29 minutes, possession went back and forth, with neither team establishing much control.

But once Krider struck, it was all Mills Godwin.

50-50 balls? Godwin. Corners? Godwin. Free kicks? You guessed it, Godwin.

Though the Eagles had several opportunities, many off brilliant feeds and leads from Virginia Tech-bound Anne Lumpkin, the Colonial District stalwart couldn’t strike on Pond and Cosby defenders like Emily Tibbens.

But Anne Canipe‘s squad, playing without star forward Joy Grove (development practice), got only one corner the entire game and hardly challenged a talkative back line and fellow freshman keeper Jessie Ashworth.

“I think the dampness and the coldness had something to do with it,” said Canipe of the Titans’ lack of ball control. “I think they beat us to the ball. You’ve got to condition and practice at that level. They just need to step up to Godwin’s level.”

The Eagles’ level is yet to be determined, but Toole is pleased with the players she has to work with.

“This is a fantastic group of girls,” said Toole, a 1997 Godwin grad. “They are very, very special people as well as great athletes. They’re technical, they’re talented, we’ve got some speed up top.

“I’m lucky. I inherited a great group of girls.”

Baseball, 3/18: Lee-Davis outlasts Prince George

by Stephen M. Lewis

slewis@digitalsports.com
(804) 240-2191

Ahead 3-0, a top-10 worthy Lee-Davis team may have relaxed against a youthful Prince George squad with the Cosby Titans on Thursday’s docket.

That mistake got the Confederates in a nine-inning dogfight, still pulled out by homestanding Lee-Davis 8-7 Wednesday night.

B.J. Mortimer was the hero, providing the game-winning single that brought in Bobo Peck. Mortimer was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI on the evening.

“[J.D. Johnson] threw me a fastball down and away, and my coaches were telling me to stay back,” Mortimer said. “I finally stayed back and drove it to opposite field like I needed to do.”

Perhaps the most credit needs to go to Lee-Davis’ Mike Kluver. He replaced Nick Frame in the sixth inning with the bases loaded, and gave up two runs in four innings striking out nine Royals.

From his nine spot in the hitting lineup, Kluver went 2 for 5, dropping a home run over the left-center fence in the fourth inning. Will Burton went 3 for 5 and Jordan Boze 2 for 3 with 3 RBI.

For Prince George, Ryan Montgomery and Cain Allin had 2 RBI each, while Ben Kendall went 2 for 4.

Softball, 3/18: Lee-Davis’ Hudson clutch

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

(804) 240-2191

Two softball heavyweights tangled Wednesday evening, and predictably an experienced standout came up large.

It was Lee-DavisKelsie Hudson, a senior, who delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring Chelsea “Cheese” Mitchell and Charyssa Parent, as the Confederates topped Prince George 2-0 in a contest where hits were at a premium.

That’s because Hudson and PG’s Lauren Vinson were in the circle.

The hurlers combined for 16 strikeouts and only gave up four hits total, two apiece.

“They made a couple of more plays in the field,” said Prince George coach Pat Waguespack, who had a runner gunned down in the first inning at third base. “They did a good job of getting it in.

“They had their right hit at the right time.”

Said Lee-Davis coach Jackie Davis: “In that situation with that experience, there’s nobody better that you would want at the plate. [Mitchell and Davis] just have so much confidence.”

They’ll need it. Lee-Davis has a gaunlet of a schedule. Thomas Dale, another Central District power, visits Thursday at 6 p.m.

“This game definitely prepared us for [Thursday] night,” Hudson said. “Thomas Dale definitely has a very good team. We’re just hoping to take the win again [Thursday].”

Group A, Div. 2 final, 3/14: Radford runs away

This is Stephen Lewis, editor of DigitalSports Richmond, back to his second home this week, VCU’s Siegel Center.

If you are near a TV, you may be able to find this game! All of the state championship games will be broadcast live!

Fox
35 (Richmond), Cox Cable (Norfolk), WDCW (Washington, D.C., Northern
VA, Winchester, Shenandoah Valley), My TV (Charlottesville) and WDRL
(Roanoke, Lynchburg).

I’ll be here ALL weekend giving you live
updates from each contest, so you are covered through TV and internet!
I’ll have photos and video highlights from every game.

Just keep refreshing your page to find out the latest from the Dan River-Radford Group A, Division 2 boys final!

Radford is up 14-9 in a fast-paced first four minutes. Watch out for Darren White, a 19-point per game scorer for Dan River. He’s got five of the nine points already.

This is a track meet, both teams are running. Charles Warren deposits two on the offensive glass. Dan River’s down 16-11, 52 seconds to go. Timeout Radford.

This Allen Dickerson kid for Radford is something else. Nine points already, some jumpers and a nice scoop shot. Radford’s up 20-11.

White hits a jumper at the horn, 20-13 Radford. This should be a barn-burner!

Second Quarter

Quick spurt by Dan River, ended by Radford’s Dontae Carter, who strokes a trey. Then Dan River brings the house down. You guessed it, Darren White, pounds a one-handed dunk to force a Radford timeout.

The Bobcats don’t want their crowd to get into it. Radford up 23-19. DeAndre Thompson‘s not shy, misses a trey, then hits one on the same possession. White is starting to take over. He just scored his 13th point.

Carter again, he’s tough. Small guy scoring in the paint, Radford 28-22. White buries a 3-pointer! Rumor has it, JMU is his next destination. I can see why.

Now Thompson comes back with a trey. Radford 31-25. This is an entertaining game and a perfect time for a TV TIMEOUT!!

The lefty! Dickerson buries a transition trey before White scores again. Then Reggie Stone glides in for two, a possible three as he got fouled. The FT is good. Radford 33-29.

OH MY GOSH! Allen Dickerson is going bananas! He just got a two-hand flush. Then Radford’s Jon Thompson got fouled going up for a jam that would’ve been over a Wildcat. This is the most exciting game yet!

Scott Hendricks drops in a 3-pointer for Radford. But Stone comes back with a three-point play. Bobcats 40-33.

Darren WHITE! Tip-dunk flush! But WAIT! DeAndre Thompson bangs a 3-pointer to end the half! Is this a Group A or AAA final? Goodness!

Third Quarter

Radford ahead 45-37, 6:12 to go in the third. DeAndre Thompson for another trey ball. Radford’s very good! 48-37, timeout Dan River, 5:17 to go.

Thompson for 3 again! Bobcats 51-39, 4:38 left. Now Jon Thompson doesn’t want to be outdone. He bangs a trey ball. Radford 54-41.

White gets a friendly bounce on a jumper. TV TIMEOUT! Radford 54-43.

Lead is still 11 for Radford at the end of three quarters, 60-49.

Fourth Quarter

Scoring update: White with 20 points to lead Dan River, DeAndre Thompson with 19 points, including five treys for Radford, who’s hit 10 3-pointers in all.

Jon Thompson hits one of two free throws as the Bobcats hols a 63-51 advantage. White is back in after getting a blow. 6:40 left, Radford up 13, 64-51.

White with a steal and flies in for another jam, this time two hands! He cleans up a miss afterward, River within 9! White FLOATER! River within 7. He has 28 points!!! Radford TIMEOUT! 4:16 to go.

Turnover Radford. River has momentum. TV TIMEOUT!! 3:43 to go!

Radford leads 72-65 with 1:25 left. Thompson hits one FT. 73-65 Radford. Until White gets another tip-dunk! This guy is ridiculous. He had 34 points tonight.

Radford back the line after several Wildcat misses. 30 seconds to go. First is good. Second is too! Bobcats 76-67.

Seven seconds left, it’s all but over. Give a round of applause to Darren White. What a performance. 36 points, nine rebounds and every play that Dan River needed to stay in the game.

This was the most entertaining of the tournament, in my opinion. Both teams played hard and well. Congrats to Radford, first state title since 1949, that’s 60 years people!

Radford   20 23 17 17 – 77
Dan River 13 22 14 20 – 69

Brittany Avancini gets loose on the break and is fouled. She hits two free throws and has seven points already. Floyd up 9-6.

The Mustangs get the steal, but Floyd gets it right back. Kayla Hartman is fouled, but it looked like all ball. Her first shot is off. Second rims out. Foul doesn’t hurt.

Avancini misses, but Hartman’s there for the offensive glass. Floyd 11-8. Bria Platenburg‘s short jumper slices the lead to one, before Avancini hits a 10 on the degree of difficulty layup. Floyd leads 13-10 at the end of one.

Second Quarter

Two jump balls have happened in the first minute. Nicole Mitchell‘s 3-pointer rims out for Mason, but Lauren Kane gets to the FT line seconds later. Her first shot is off, her second one is as well.

Then Kane drops a 3-pointer from the right corner. Quick timeout by Floyd County with Mason up 18-13.

The teams trade baskets, 20-15 Mason with 3:42 left. TV Timeout! Buffaloes make a FT, but Mason handles their patented full-court pressure with ease. This is very encouraging for them.

Mason leads 22-16, 3 minutes to go before Karina Miller knifes through the lane. Play is pciking up, Mitchell scores, Mason up 6, 2:25 to go.

Mustangs ahead 27-24 at the half. Avancini drilled her 13th point at the buzzer.

Third Quarter

The final 16 minutes are about to begin. Floyd County calls a timeout with 7 minutes to go. The Mustangs are doing some things to fluster the Buffaloes.

Mitchell picks up where she left off, scoring on the offensive glass. 29-24 Mustangs. 31-24 Mustangs as Kenny scores from Plantenburg. The Mustangs are playing tremendous basketball right now.

Chatal Thomas bangs a jumper, Kane gets a board. The Mustangs are controlling the game. Avancini’s going to the line for two, the first is good. The second is true!

Kenny scores again from Platenburg, great pass. Avancini gets to the line again. It rolls in. The next goes. Mason up 7, 35-28 with 4:14 to go. TV TIMEOUT, 3:50 to go!

Platenburg gets loose on the break, 37-28 Mustangs. Platenburg again on the break, 39-28 Mustangs.

Brittany Bourne scores on a stickback, then Floyd finally gets a turnover with its press. They can’t convert though.

Thomas slices through the lane, 41-30 Mason. Timeout Mason, 1:44 to go. Brandy Phillips headed to the line for Floyd, 20.7 to go in the third. Floyd down 11. She hits one of two. 10-point deficit at the end of three.

Fourth Quarter

Carmen Bolt hits one free throw to slice Mason’s lead to nine, 6:40 to go. Mitchell answers with a 17-footer for Mason, 45-34 Mustangs.

Timeout Mustangs, 5:20 to go, up 45-35. Platenburg again, nice interior passing from the Mustangs. Then Thomas plucked Avancini on a nice double team from Mitchell. WOW! Mustangs up 49-35 with 4:03 to go.

The Mustangs complete the win, 53-46.

First state title for Mason, upsetting the defending champions. Brittany Avancini had a nice effort with 19 points for the Buffaloes. Platenburg had 14 points and Mitchell 13. Thomas chipped in with nine points.

Basketball: Freedom Girls Win VHSL D3 State Title!

Live! From Richmond … join LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor Dan Sousa as he blogs during the VHSL state finals at the Siegel Center … The Freedom girls take on R.E. Lee at 11 a.m. in the Division 3 final and then Loudoun County girls face Turner Ashby at 7 p.m. in the D4 final.

The Live! action starts here …

It’s showtime as the teams head to the benches … Freedom student body is well represented, including the Eagle mascot! And Freedom brought a large parent section behind their bench. The Freedom students are behind the basket near the Freedom bench.
National Anthem is over and the Eagle students are chanting “Freedom! Freedom!” …
Each team is having a player read a note about “sportsmanship” … whend did Freedom get a mascot costume? It looks rented … very well worn! Liz Turpin, the only player to be part of the 1-win team from four years ago, has been chosen to read the sportsmanship note for Freedom … nice touch and what a long way the Eagles have come!
They are introducing the non-Freedom starters.
Now the Freedom starters: The lights have gone down and the spotlight is out … BIG TIME!
First the Lee starters … 5-6 junior #14 Kathleeen Thompson, 5-10 FR #20 Jamila Thomas, 5-10 FR #23, 5-6 FR #32 Angela Mickens, 5-10 SO #40 Daquaa Scott. 3 Freshmen starters!!!
Now the Eagles … 6-3 JR #13 Kelsey Buchanan, 5-10 SO #14 Dionna Scott, 5-5 SO #20 Kim Koditek, 5-5 FR #22 Alexis Mayo, 5-5 SR Meixandra Porter …
Lights up back up … Lee on the court, Freedom huddled … Time for a state title!
Lee wins the tip. Inside shot missed, Scott with rebound. Lee steal on the other. Mickens with the transition bucket. 2-0 Lee.
Scott posts up and scores, 2-2!
**** shot by Lee and Koditek finishes on the other end with nice pass from Porter … 4-2 Freedom.
Missed 3-pointer by Lee. Porter misses 3-pointer. Scott and Buchanan both gets blocks on defensive end but ball out of bounds to Lee.
Turnover by Lee on a bad bounce pass. 5:47 left in first quarter. Fans chanting “MVP” as Porter dribbles up court but she turns it over and Mickens with the easy layin. 4-4.
Porter answers with a pull-up jumper, 6-4 Freedom. Buchanan rebound on defensive end for Eagles.
Scott drops a 3-pointer from right corner for Eagles … 9-4 Freedom. Scott then comes up with a steal! And she drives baseline … too easy for Freedom. 11-4. The young Lee players dribble out of bounds … they need a timeout!
Scott has exited and is getting treatment. She looks a bit sick or something? Yet another Lee turnover and a TV timeout with 3:31 to go and Freedom up 11-4.
Scott still out for Freedom as play resumes. She is getting some water on the bench. Porter brings it up. Porter misses tough shot. Lee misses on their end.
Scott back in and gets ofensive rebound for Freedom but misses open baseline shot. Tie ball and arrow to Freedom, inbound under their basket. Porter is fouled on a jumper from 10 feet and she will shoot two foul shots with 2:26 left in the first quarter. She makes the first. Remember on Tuesday the Eagles had some foul troubles but so far 1 of 1. Swishes second. 13-4 Freedom leads.
Ceara Scott in and forces a turnover for Freedom. Buchanan fields a missed Porter jumper and puts it back in. Lee calls time out and Freedom coach Jason Eldredge earns some well-deserved TV time as he strides towards the Freedom student section and urges them … they respond! Freedom lead 15-4 with 2:10 to go in first half. DScott has seven points.
Lee misses jumper, Buchanan rebound. DScott in transition, basket and then CScott steals in backcourt and feeds her cousin DScott and she lays it in and is fouled. Crowd going crazy! Freedom up 19-4 and now 20-4 with made free throw for AND ONE … 1:46 to go in first. CScott takes charge for yet another Lee turnovers … we wondered how the young Lee team would respond with three freshmen starting and no seniors on roster and the answer is: Freedom up 20-4.
Lee with another pass that ends up out of bounds. Freedom with ball and 1:20 to go. By the way, in a year of firsts, after the AND ONE by DScott, Coach Eldredge may have set a Freedom high jump record with a great leap off the bench!
Buchanan with big block but Freedom turns it over. Lee misses 3-poiner but Lee is out-hustling Freedom as the Eagles have lost a little edge with this big lead. Lee responds with an air ball. Freedom turns it over again but Lee’s shot from near halfcourt is short at the buzzer. First Quarter score: Freedom 20, Lee 4.

Second Quarter
DScott starts the quarter with a block shot but Freedom can’t finish in transition. Lee with the ball … Buchanan rebound.
DScott … was she really second team ALL-DISTRICT? … crossover dribble and scores … Freedom 22, Lee 4.
Mayo with another Freedom block on defense. Kemani Crawford breaks the 18-0 run with a jumper , 22-6 Freedom.
Freedom turns the ball over again but gets it back on defense. Buchanan is tripled-teamed and can’t get a shot off. 5:49 to go in first half.
Lee shot 2 of 14 in first quarter, Freedom 8 of 14.
Another Freedom block! Porter misses jumper and then gets follow by putting ball back while on the way up … you don’t see 5-foot-5 guards play off the ground often like this. 24-6 Freedom.
Mickens answers for Lee, 24-8 with 4:55 to go.
Buchanan is fouled and will shoot two: She makes the first. She makes the seconds. Despite an illegal noie maker shot off by a Lee fans … security is headed into the stands!
Freedom has been struggling early in postseason but not today as they have the ball back after a Lee turnover and leading 26-8. Freedom turns it over but Lee is called for walking. Lee had 8 turnovers in the first quarter alone.
Koditek with a smooth jumper from the left side. 28-8. This looks like a Loudoun County girls postseason score!
Buchana with another block, sending the ball into the stands, the fans into a frenzy and a TV Timeout with 3:57 to play in first half and Eagles soaring to a 28-8 lead.
Freedom almost steals the inbounds pass. Back to Lee. Buchanan with another block. State record is 8 in a game for AA … by my count she has five already!
Porter with a pull-up, fadeaway jumper … 30-8 Freedom! Eagles steal in backcourt but take a wild shot. Lee’s Scott scores in transition. 30-10.
DScott misses inside shot and Thompson for Lee is all alone for layin, 30-12. DScott responds with a 3-pointer! 33-12 Freedom.
Mickens is heading up for Lee, she scores to make it 33-14 with 1:40 to play in first half. Freedom calls TIME OUT, 30 second variety to talk over this last 80 seconds.
Buchanan drives from wing, a rare move, and misses the shot and then is hit with a foull, her second. 1:16 to go.
Daquaa Scott posts up and is fouled by DScott (Great Scott! There are a lot of Scott’s in this contest!). She makes the first. 1:06 to play. Makes second. 33-16 Freedom.
Porter creases the net with a 14-foot jumper. 35-16 Freedom. Lee misses and ball out of bounds to Eagles. 41 seconds to play. Looks like a last shot … Paul Tenorio of the WashPost called this … He is “The Coach” here …
DScott with the leaner with 4 seconds to play and Freedom takes an overwhelming 37-16 lead into the locker room at the half. Half: Freedom 37, Lee 16.

Halftime Scoring:
Lee: Thompson 2, Crawford 2, Mickens 8, Scott 4. Total 16

Lee 7 of 29 from field and 0-3 from 3-point, Freedom 15 of 29 (51.7%) from field and 2 of 4 from 3-point.

Third Quarter Starts
Porter with a runner off the glass. 39-16. Lee throws it away on the other end. Here we go again!
Buchanan gets a dose of her own medicine as she can’t fight through three players. On other end, DScott picks up her second foul. Lee’s Scott will shoot two with 6:49 to play in third. She misses both but Lee gets rebound and they still miss two attempts.
Porter tries jumper to left of FT line and misses but Buchanan with rebound and she is fouled. Two shots, misses first. 6:22 to play. Makes the second. 40-16 Freedom.
Buchanan with defensive rebound and nice outlet pass to DScott but she misses  layin. Lee misses another outside jumper and Buchanan is tied up. Arrow to Lee as Freedom started half with the ball. Thompson drives in for Lee but can’t finish. Back to Eagles.
We have yet another Scott sighting as Kendra Scott blocks Buchanan … but can’t respond on other end. Freedom runs the transition and Koditek feeds Buchanan who runs the floor really well for a 6-3 player and she scores. Lee can’t wait for the TV Time out and they call time with 4:42 to play in third and Freedom leading, 42-16.
Mickens scores after timeout. Porter takes a tough shot for Freedom. Eagles really don’t need to be rushing at this point as they lead, 42-18. Lee on the other hand is playing a million miles an hour and they throw up a wild shot. Ball back to Freedom, leading by 24 with 4:00 to play in third.
DScott is fouled down low (we have Daquaa Scott, Kendra Scott, Dionna Scott, Ceara Scott … all in uniform … only thing missing is Willard Scott, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Scott Baio). Or how about “Scotty” … if he was on the Lee bench right now he no doubt would be saying: “Captain, we can’t hold them!”
DScott 1 of 2 from the line but they get the ball back on the miss.  Buchanan is blocked but gets the ball into her hands and is good on the second effort. 45-18 Freedom.
Lee misses but gets rebound. They miss and get rebound. They miss again and get rebound. They get blocked. 4 attempts … 0 points. If this was the British Open they would already be engraving the Freedom name on the Cup.
I have Paul Tenorio to my left of the WashPost and Jason Rufner of the Loudoun Times-Mirror to my right here on press row … what is that song … “here I am stuck in the middle again” … Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right …
DScott of Lee to the line with 1:49 left in third. DScott of Freedom has three fouls now. She makes both. 445-30 Freedom.
For the second straight trip, Freedom turns the ball over. A scramble on Lee end after another miss and Freedom ties up the ball. Arrow to Eagles. They are holding it a bit now. With 1:00 to go in third.
Buchanan takes a deep jumper … not really needed though but Lee on their end can’t connect. Freedom turns it over, they don’t really want the last shot after all but they steal it back!
Eagles fire up a 3-pointer with 20 seconds still to go … I am about to call a TIME OUT for the Eagles … Lee works and works and works … they finally get a shot to trickle in at the buzzer, Crawford on the follow, so we go to the final quarter, Freedom leading 45-22.
Fourth Quarter: Freedom up 45-22

Eagles now eight minutes from making history … no Loudoun boys or girls baskeball team has ever won a state title … Freedom is just the third team all-time to make the finals!
DScott off and running for Freedom … a layin to give her 22 points! Freedom up, 47-22. 7:40 to go.
DScott forces turnover but Freedom misses layin. Lee can’t score and Freedom has it back again.
Mickens with the steal but misses wide open layin. She gets it back a second time as Lee has upped the pressure on Freedom and this time she makes the layin. 47-24 Freedom.
Koditek is fouled but misses the first with 6:25 to play. She makes the second. 48-24 Freedom.
Thompson gets the bounce and cuts lead to 48-26. 6:00 to go.
DScott misses 6-footer. DScott gets block from behind but Tenorio in front … either way … Freedom with ball and Porter is fouled with 5:27 to play on an AND ONE … makes the FT for a 51-26 Eagles lead.
Lee airs another 3-pointer (will anybody write that this was R.E. Lee’s toughest day since Appomattax Courthouse … I doubt it).
Lee is now misses shots they have no doubt made all season and this young team will be back on the big stage again but today, it will be Freedom hoisting the championship trophy. DScott is fouled and makes both, 53-26.
Buchanan just tied a state record with her 8th block and then she gets her 9th block. State record. Porter with the transition basket. Freedom up 55-26! 3:38 left.
TV Timeout … After such a frazzled few weeks it is good to see Elredge and his coaching staff all smiles here, Joe Crawford and Stacy Murray and Paul Robinson all deserve a shout out! As does the Freedom AD staff of Rusty Lowery and Matt Oblas.
#10 for Freedom, senior Liz Turpin has entered the game. The only player left from a team that went 1-21 the year the school opened in 2005-06.
DScott makes two free throws for Lee, 55-28 Freedom.
Eagles with turnover. Lee can’t convert … Porter on the line for Freedom for two shots with 2:32 to go. First is good. Second misses. 56-28 by Freedom has doubled down on Lee. DScott for Lee scores, 56-30 Freedom.
Mickens drives in after a Freedom miss unabated … 1:30 to play, Freedom up 56-32.
Freedom made an illegal substitution … player with incorrect number in the scorebook. Mickens is 1 of 2 on technical. 56-33 Freedom. Buchanan got another block … that is No. 10 by my count!
Eagles fans chanting: “We’re not done yet!”
Buchanan right before buzzer to assure herself of a triple-double! 58-33 Freedom! FINAL Eagles have won a state championship … first in Loudoun history!
