Girls soccer, 5/26/09: Knights blank Hawks

Two sophomores did the scoring as Thomas Dale defeated Hanover 3-0 Tuesday afternoon in the Central Region girls soccer quarterfinals.

Hailey Flores scored twice, once in each half, and Sarah Haws added another in the first half.

The Knights move on to face Mills Godwin, a 1-0 winner over Cosby, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Cosby High School in the semifinals.

The winner earns a berth into the region final and the state Group AAA tournament.

“My team played a really nice ball through,” Flores said. “I just hustled as fast as I could and drove up the field and scored. So, it was nice.

“It’s really nice to win the first round, but no resting. We have a tough, tough game [Wednesday].”

Central Region Track Meet, 5/23/09: Deep Run and Freeman repeat

Deep Run’s girls and Douglas Freeman’s boys brought Central Region outdoor track titles back to the Colonial District, again.

The Wildcats took the crown by nine points over Patrick Henry and its strong discus (Christiana Moss) and pole vault performances (Lizzie Powell, 12-1, meet record).

Briana Hudson and Marlena Daly grabbed first and second, respectively, in the high jump for Deep Run, the two-time champs.

The Rebels used the pole vault, usually dominated by Atlee, to claim its title by 10.5 over the Raiders.

Jack Smith and Patrick Dietrick registered a 1-2 performance, while a host of Raiders followed.

Freeman’s 3,200-meter relay team came up with a big gold medal, as solid places in the distance races enabled the Rebels to claim its second straight championship.

Individually, Atlee’s Ben Dejarnette and Midlothian’s Kathleen Lautzenheiser pulled the distance double.

Dejarnette won the 1,600 (4:16.01) and set a record in the 3,200 (9:11.32, almost 35 seconds before second place), as did Lautzenheiser (5:07.53 in 1,600; 11:01.59 in 3,200).

Lautzenheiser also ran the second leg of Midlothian’s winning 3,200-meter relay team.

Girls soccer, 5/21/09: Godwin wins epic

by Stephen M. Lewis

In the penalty-kick portion of soccer to decide a game, a coach selects five players to shoot.

Some adjectives of those picked are calm, confident and with talented feet, as forwards and midfielders are the most usually chosen.

So Mills Godwin coach Ali Toole chose Kyra Byron as one of her kickers. Hold up? The goalkeeper Kyra Byron?

“We were trying to get a good feel for who would be confident,” Toole said of a recent practice involving PKs. “And Kyra without a doubt didn’t miss any of them and is really confident.”

She didn’t miss Thursday night, either, giving the Eagles a 2-0 win in the penalty-kick portion to break the 1-1 knot with Deep Run in the Colonial District girls soccer final at Hermitage.

“I was speechless. I couldn’t think,” said Byron, headed to Longwood to stop shots. “It was great to be out there. And to score made it that much better.

“I give props to Deep Run, they played a great game, it was amazing. We just love to be out here and we rival them any time.”

The contest should have been on TNT it had so much drama.

Marie Krider scored 10 minutes into the contest on a great through ball for Godwin. Deep Run answered in the 45th minute, with Rachel Powers depositing Amy Turner‘s great assist.

Then it got crazy for Godwin.

“So dramatic,” Toole said.

Sarah Bellotti hit the crossbar in the 60th minute.

It was a sign of things to come as the Eagles began to pepper outstanding keeper Emma Newins, but she was up to the task.

The sophomore had a great diving save at the right pipe in the 68th minute and leaped over everyone to bat away a few Anne Lumpkin corners late in regulation, as Krider shot high somewhere in between.

“[Newins is] so special,” Toole said with a look of disbelief. “That one ball that’s bouncing in flight, she clearly jumped over our forwards.”

In each of the four OTs, the teams had a few chances, but none better than Caroline Turner‘s free kick at the end of the third for Deep Run.

It was a perfect shot that Godwin’s freshman keeper Jessie Ashworth jumped up and batted down, receiving help from her Eagles to clear the ball.

Perhaps a sign of things to come, as the ninth-grader stepped up in PKs.

Deep Run went first as Alexis Read hit the crossbar. Lumpkin scored as Godwin took an early 1-0 lead.

Ashworth then put a diving save on Megan Shaia‘s shot, but Godwin’s Emily Ornelas hit the crossbar.

Brittany Entz then shot high for Deep Run, but Newins saved Krider’s offering to keep Deep Run down 1.

But Kirstin Bjornstad went high again for the Wildcats, setting up Byron’s clincher.

Mills Godwin 1 0 0 0 0 0 – 1

Godwin wins 2-0 on penalty kicks

Girls tennis, 5/20/09: Hahn region champion

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

Every now and then, the Central Region is blessed with an exceptional, electric and youthful tennis talent.

Over a year ago, whispers turned into screams about another on the horizon, then-eighth grader Emily Hahn, already on the state and national scene.

Now Hahn, four days past her 15th birthday and a Douglas Freeman freshman, is the Central Region girls tennis singles champion.

She topped Atlee’s powerful Yasmin Fotovat Wednesday afternoon at Mills Godwin 6-4, 6-1.

“Yeah, I feel a lot of pressure,” Hahn said of living up to the expectations. “After everyone talking and me being the favorite. But it’s fine.”

Maybe pressure was getting to Hahn and fatigue getting to Fotovat.

The players broke each other’s serve every game until Hahn held at 5-4 of the first set.

She then broke Fotovat’s offering for a 6-4 first-set victory.

But Atlee’s transfer from Denver broke right back to start the second set.

“I’m tired from yesterday,” said Fotovat, coming off six hours of playing yesterday in singles and doubles. “I gave her a run for her money in the first set.

“Emily held her serve and that threw the rhythm off and we were all over the place after that.”

Hahn ran off six straight games to finish the match, winning points on her pinpoint two-hand backhand and steady play.

Fotovat, battling fatigue and heat, tried to hit winners to keep the points short, but it wasn’t her day.

“Emily’s just a great player,” Fotovat said. “And today she was the better player. Maybe next time.”

They saw each other a few hours later in the doubles final, and Hahn teamed with Elena Rusu for a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 win over Fotovat and Shao-Ching Tu.

Both individuals and teams will head to the state tournament.

“As the match went on I think I got a little more consistent,” Hahn said. “I adjusted to her game and her shots more.”

And now the region must adjust to another tennis phenom.

Stephen Lewis’ Blog, 5/20/09

At this point, I’m like most every other high-school reporter in the nation.

EXHAUSTED!

There are so many spring sports to cover, so many deserving young people that deserve attention.

It’s impossible to be everywhere, but I try!

So instead of just choosing a game to go to Tuesday evening at the height of playoffs, I went to the immaculate Hanover campus to take in boys soccer, baseball and softball at the Capital District semifinals.

First up was Atlee softball, who crushed Varina 24-0. I got a few highlights from there, photos, too, and move on.

Next was baseball. Surprisingly, my alma mater Henrico was hanging tough with top-seed and No. 2-ranked Hanover.

But a couple of doubles in the fourth inning, one from Laine Denton, blew the game open.

I chatted with some of my favorite student-athletes after – what’s up Ben Dejarnette of Atlee and Garrett “Kobe” Joyner, a Lee-Davis baskeball player! HAHA!

Ben covered the Atlee game with words quite well, couldn’t do much better myself. Check it out here! I got some photos and video to help him out.

Then it was on to the game of the night, Lee-Davis and Hanover softball. By this point I had been out for 2 1/2 hours, so my battery was on E.

I was still able to get some nice videos before it conked out, including Rachel Houff‘s two-RBI shot that you see above these words that gave Lee-Davis all it needed, advancing with a 3-1 win.

It was the end of a dynasty of sort, as Hanover won’t be in the region softball tournament since the school opened.

It was a productive and fun day, to say the least.

In other news, look out for some college news coming up, a couple of signings and commitments involving Thomas Dale athletes.

Until next time, it’s your favorite reporter, signing off…

Boys soccer, 5/19/09: Raiders headed to region

by Ben Dejarnette
Atlee Student Correspondent

The Atlee boys soccer team claimed its spot in the Capital District championship game with an emphatic 3-0 win over Hanover in the tournament semifinal Tuesday night.

After a goalless first half, the Raiders sprung to life with two goals by Jordan Boothe and another by Ian Shelton.

“It’s always just nerves in the first half and everyone’s flying around a hundred miles an hour,” Atlee coach Steve Thompson said. “[I] talked to them a little at halftime and just told them to settle things down and pick your spots and they did. They picked three great opportunities and finished them.”

The story of the first half was great goalkeeping, as both Atlee’s Mike McCabe and Hanover’s Alex Moore kept the opposition off the scoreboard.

Both teams were able to slip behind the defense on several occasions, but squandered chances in front of the net.

The second half was all Atlee, however, as the Raiders used their speed to create shot after shot on the Hanover net.

Just over a minute after the break, Ryan Boothe crossed the ball to his brother Jordan, who coolly slotted the ball home into the bottom right corner.

Atlee kept pushing forward with the lead and momentum on their side, forcing several strong saves from Moore.

After several close misses, Shelton finally found the back of the net with a 69th-minute goal. Sebastian Morrison played a perfect pass behind the defender on the left flank, leaving Shelton to use his blazing speed to beat the defender and slot home the goal.

“I just got a great through ball from Sebastian Morrison and it’s easy from there. Just one touch and slotted it into the far post,” Shelton said.

Boothe capped the scoring eight minutes later with a breakaway from midfield, again beating Moore with a shot to the right corner.

The DigitalSports No. 9 Raiders will now face No. 8 Lee-Davis in the Capital District final. Though Atlee is 0-2 against the Confederates this season, it was Shelton a year ago who scored a game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime to knock off Lee-Davis for the district crown.

“We know we can compete with these guys,” Jordan Boothe said. “Both times [this season] they beat us by one goal…We’re looking to shut them up early, so hopefully we can do that.”

Boys soccer, 5/18/09: Tucker revenge

by Stephen M. Lewis

(804) 240-2191

J.R. Tucker didn’t end the season too well, as Patrick Henry surprised the 10th-ranked Tigers 4-2 in boys soccer.

Luckily for the Tigers, they got another shot at the Patriots in the Colonial District tournament’s first round, beating PH 5-1 at Deep Run Monday afternoon.

Two goals apiece came from the high-scoring Karl Roland and Marcel Almeida.

Roland’s second goal, Tucker’s third, was a good as it gets.

Ian Major lofted a free kick and Roland used his powerful body to out muscle the Patriots.

Roland’s goal registered a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

“Me and Karl have just been linking up all season,” Major said. “I just really feel comfortable playing with him. He knows exactly what I’m going to do, and I know where he’s going to be.”

The Patriots, who received numerous yellow cards and two red cards in the contest, made things interesting on freshman Sean Mullican‘s goal.

It picked up PH’s offensive intensity tremendously.

But Tucker weathered the storm as Almeida scored on a bloop shot and Calebe Braga ended the scoring in the 78th minute.
