J. River FB Preview, 8/26/09

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@sbgnet.com
(804) 240-2191

A recent James River practice had that spirit that breeds competitiveness.

That’s what coach Greg DeFrancesco is looking for as his Rapids battle each other for positions.

Even entrenched starters are going after each other as James River is eager to post a season more like its 7-3 mark in 2007 than its 3-7 reversal a year ago.

“Practice is intense,” safety Jesse Wells said. “We’re doing everything we can to work the offense. They try to get to the outside but that’s not going to happen.

“They’ve got some speed but we’ve got some quickness on the outside and we’re just not going to let that happen.”

The Rapids defense is looking strong, led by Wells, defensive tackle Ryan Powis and sophomore inside linebacker Conlan Cassidy, already 6-2, 230 pounds.

James River’s offense scored on its first possession in an intrasquad scrimmage, but the defense shut them down the rest of practice.

“The second time we went back on the field we got excited,” Cassidy said. “We brought more intensity to the game and we played a lot better.”

The offense is led by Josh Wells, Jesse’s twin brother. They are both seniors coming off of second-team all-district efforts.

Wells has a powerful backfield mate in Ke’Von White, who is difficult to tackle.

His receivers have size and are plentiful when DeFrancesco goes to his spread attack, which will look to Powis (’08 all-district pick) and his linemates to open holes and give time.

“The defense is crazy,” White said.

We’ll find out how crazy soon. For James River’s sake, let’s hope it is insane.

ALL ABOUT JAMES RIVER

Key players: Josh Wells, Sr., QB; Jesse Wells, S, Sr.; Ryan Powis, OT/DT, 6-1, 260, Sr.; Ke’Von White, RB, 5-8, 175, Jr.; Conlan Cassidy, MLB, So., 6-2, 230

Key losses: Austin Hersh, LB (Hargrave Military); Cole Ransom, RB/WR

Big game: at Midlothian, Sept. 18.

Outlook: How quickly can James River’s offense catch up to the defense?

Monacan FB Preview, 8/25/09

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@sbgnet.com
(804) 240-2191

Here’s a question.

What two Dominion District teams have a consecutive playoff streak of two or more?

L.C. Bird and … Monacan. The Chiefs have made two straight Central Region, Division 5 playoff appearances.

Yes, Division 5 is the weaker division, but Monacan has been playing good football under Danny Parsons.

This year, he has 7 starters back, three offensively and four on defense.

One taking a spot on both sides of the ball is Logan Staib (Sti-be).

He will pull the unusual double of quarterback and middle linebacker.

“This year they’re finally going to let me go both ways,” Staib said. “Last year … defense is my love, but I had to step in at quarterback. It’s tough because you’ve got to know the defensive assignments as well as the offensive. But I’m up for the challenge.”

Staib hopes new starters like running back Doug Brown are as ready as he is.

J.C. Wiggins leaves a big hole in the backfield, and Garett Patterson leaves the same void at free safety.

They both were big keys to Monacan’s playoffs berths, and will need to step forward if the Chiefs are to get another.

“We need some young guys to step up. And we have plenty,” Staib said. “We have a good junior class coming in.”

Defensively, Travis Luck is a junior at OLB, and Parsons loves his junior defensive end tandem of Joseph White and Will Womack.

Offensively, Brinnan Bradshaw, another junior, is a promising tight end prospect, at 6-3, 230 pounds with good speed.

Monacan’s not at the reload level yet, but this group could go a long way to achieving that level.

ALL ABOUT MONACAN

Key players: Logan Staib, MLB/QB, Sr.; Doug Brown, RB, Sr.; Robert Redfern, OL, Sr.; Kevin Walker, FS/WR, Sr.; David Jordan, OT; Jovan Moody, CB; Travis Luck, OLB, Jr.

Key losses: J.C. Wiggins, RB; Garett Patterson, FS (Duke)

Fast fact: The Chiefs have made two straight playoff apperances, but hadn’t made the playoffs in seven years before. Both playoff losses have been to Hanover.

Big game: vs. Hanover, Oct. 23, 7:30 p.m. Win could be big boost in Division 5 race.

Outlook: There are a lot of new parts that will try to lift Monacan. If the newcomers can produce, Monacan will make it three straight playoff apperances.

Midlothian FB Preview, 8/26/09

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@sbgnet.com
(804) 240-2191

One of the nice guys in football, Midlothian coach Dave Cooper, looks to have a mean football team in the trenches.

Looking forward to 2009, he had a promising offense led by a powerful line and the athletic and versatile Josiah Shelton.

But because of a family move, Shelton is at John Marshall this season, leaving Cooper and the Trojans without their dynamic playmaker.

Still, coming off two straight 2-8 seasons, Midlothian has all the protection and blocking anyone could want.

Virginia Tech commit Matt Arkema (6-4, 295) is at guard and Danny Klein (6-6, 275) is at tackle, providing perhaps the best left side of the offensive line in the area.

Cooper’s just looking for someone who wants to make the plays behind them.

“We’re pretty big left to right,” Klein said. “We’ve got some nice
young guys coming down from JV. We’re trying to pick it up this year.”

Junior quarterback Jimmy Whitten is high on Cooper’s list.

He’ll have a slew of capable receivers to find in seniors Charles Poindexter and Robert Jones, and junior Ryan Hamner.

Defensively, Arkema and Klein are key on the defensive line.

Patrick Minnick looks good at outside linebacker, while Chad Harpool is providing the thumping from inside linebacker.

“We’re looking to step up our defense,” Harpool said. “We’ve switched to a 5-2 defense. I like the outlook.”

Look out for another weapon the Trojans have in kicker Alex Powers, who has a booming leg and is coming off of a second-team all-Dominion District selection.

ALL ABOUT MIDLOTHIAN

Key players: Matt Arkema, OG/DT, Sr.; Danny Klein, OT/DE, Sr.; Patrick Minnick, OLB/TE, 6-1, 212, Sr.; Chad Harpool, ILB/FB, 5-10, 210, Sr.; Jimmy Whitten, QB, Jr.; Ryan Hamner, WR, Jr.; Alex Powers, K, Sr.

Key losses: Josiah Shelton, ATH (transferred to John Marshall); Callen Larus, C; Jimmy Krahe, DB

Big game: vs. James River, Sept. 18, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: The Trojans are in the toughest district in the region. Getting in the second tier of teams will be a successful season.

Varina FB Preview, 8/24/09

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@sbgnet.com
(804) 240-2191

It was a dream season for Varina and first-year head coach Stu Brown in 2008.

It’s 2009, and Brown is wide awake, remembering his dream, but not liking the ending.

“We’re coming off a loss,” Brown said matter of factly. “So we think about the loss we had last year. That’s the last thing in our memory bank. We needed to get back out here for all of us.

“That just sat in our craw and to be honest with you, we felt that the team that we lost to was more fundamental than us. This is the first chance we had to come out here and correct it.”

Wow, that’s from a coach of a team that went 12-1, won the Central Region, Division 6 title and fell in the state semifinals.

Oh well Central Region, no “we can’t be beat blues” in Blue Devilville. Varina is as motivated as ever, and perhaps as talented.

It starts with West Virginia commits Trey Johnson at running back, and the big Marquis Wallace up front offensively and defensively. Look out for Johnson to use his terrific speed at cornerback as well.

QB Herman Norrell had a good year as a junior. Look for his senior campaign to be much more consistent, and for him to be much more confident pulling the trigger.

Why not when you have receivers like Division I-recruit Jerel Harrison snagging passes?

The offense, returning seven starters, is just looking like a potent group.

“We’ve got more speed,” Wallace said. “Everything is speed. Offensive line, speed. Wide receivers, speed. Trey Johnson, speed.”

The defense returns four starters, starting in the middle with Addonis Robinson, who had an all-district year in ’08.

That number doesn’t include Wallace, who the coaching staff believes can play offense or defense for the Mountaineers, or Johnson.

It does include Nick Taylor, about to turn in his fourth year starting at free safety on the varsity unit, a feat not many have turned at Varina.

He’s in company with the likes of Kevin Lewis and Michael Robinson, now with the San Francisco 49ers.

“I started my freshman year and started off with a bang with a region championship,” Taylor said. “Sophomore year, disappointing for Varina standards, 7-3. But we got back last year, another region championship.

“This year we want to take it a step farther. We want to get to that state championship, that’s our goal.”

Added Brown: “The last thing I want us to do is read our own publicity. Yeah, we’re all good, but we’ve got to get better. There’s a lot of good teams in this region and they’re all equal to us.”

ALL ABOUT VARINA

Key players: Trey Johnson, RB, Sr.; Marquis Wallace, OL/DL, Sr.; Nick Taylor, FS, Sr.; Herman Norrell, QB, Sr.; Jerel Harrison, WR, Sr.; Addonis Robinson, LB, Sr.; Davon Cook, OL, Sr.

Key losses: T.K. Hester, CB (William & Mary); DeAntre Rhodes, DT (Virginia Tech); Bobby Smith, WR (Virginia); Sakori Wilson, OL

Fast fact: Varina has been to the state tournament 14 times.

Big game: at Highland Springs, 11/12, 7 p.m. This is a THURSDAY night game.

Outlook: The Blue Devils are loaded again and have plenty of experience from a very successful unit. A very difficult schedule should have the Blue Devils battle tested come November. Look for a Highland Springs-Varina tilt to decide the Capital District crown once again.

Lee-Davis FB Preview, 8/22/09

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@sbgnet.com
(804) 240-2191

Second-year Lee-Davis coach Jason Meade has all of the skill positions he could ever want.

Now he just needs to find the right combination of offensive and defensive linemen.

“Who are going to be the five [offensive linemen] and four [defensive
linemen] that are going to fill in?” Meade said. “We have to get that
answered.”

It’s early, so the Confederates have plenty of time to find the right combination to provide adequate trench play.

He has a few players that aren’t question marks in DL Calvin Davis and OL/DL Matt Doty.

“We’re looking pretty good. Stout and big,” Doty said. “We’re going to be quicker than last year.”

The aforementioned skilled positions have quickness, speed, hands, power and some other adjectives that don’t pop to mind.

Leading the way is RB Tucker Walton, who had a standout 2008 year and comes back bigger, stronger and faster.

His receivers that will help keep defenses honest are Brandon Angus and Will Connerley, to name a very few.

Two QBs are battling for the starting spot, senior Phillip Gardner and junior William Coalson. If the season began today, Coalson would be the man.

“I think we did too much rotating last year,” Meade said of Gardner and the graduated Will Burton sharing time in the pistol formation. “We need to decide on a guy and ride with him.”

The Confederates platooned last year, but will get their best athletes on the field at all times this year.

So Angus and Connerley will go both ways, anchoring the defensive backfield. Brandon Robinson leads the linebacking core and will also be a lineman.

L-D went 4-6 last season and were in a bunch of games no one thought it
would be in. They want to take the next step in the tough Capital
District this season.

“I think with our off-season conditioning and our work ethic right
now,” Walton said, “I think we are going to be able to compete with the
high-level ones.”

ALL ABOUT LEE-DAVIS

Key players: Tucker
Walton, RB, Sr.; Will Connerley, S/WR, Sr.; Brandon Angus, CB/WR/K,
Sr.; Matt Doty, OL/DL, Sr.; Brandon Robinson, ILB/OL, Sr.

Key losses: T.J. Harvey, WR; Will Burton, QB

Top newcomer: William Coalson, QB/FS – “He has all the intangibles,” Meade said.

Big game: At Hanover, Oct. 16, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Last year’s performance went a long way to establishing credibility back at Lee-Davis. An above .500 year shouldn’t be a shock.

Henrico FB Preview, 8/21/09

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@sbgnet.com
(804) 240-2191

Roger Brookes‘ single- and double-wing will have a companion in 2009.

In his first year at Henrico, the extremely successful King William coach brought over his offense that didn’t result in big points or explosive plays in 2008.

But after his skill positions went 7-1 this summer in 7-on-7 ball, here comes a version of Brookes’ spread offense that he employed late in his King William tenure.

It should be effective with guys like Daquan “Wal-Mart” Martin, UR commit and speedster DreQuan Hoskey and versatile Timone Brown.

“We have what we consider a core group of guys who worked hard this summer,” Brookes said. “It’s going to be the key to the team, actually.

“We’re going to try to get them the ball and move it down the field.”

The athletic group will be trouble on the outskirts of the field as the Warriors try to find room on the outside, and have the wing to switch it up on the inside.

But the athletes need time to work, and Victor Ripley will help provide that from his tackle spot, leading a good-sized line with potential stars such as sophomore Andre Redmond (6-4, 260, T).

He’s one of many young players and JV call-ups that Brookes is expecting to step forward to help Henrico bury its 3-7 record in 2008.

Defensively, some stalwarts have departed, but Hosley, Martin and Blaze Torrance team up to provide a very good secondary.

Ripley and Sala Fox, a four-year varsity starter, will anchor the defensive line as a fresh group of linebackers, which might include Martin at times, will need to mature.

“We’re hoping other guys start producing,” Brookes said. “Everyone else has to get going. They’ve got to believe they can win.”

ALL ABOUT HENRICO

Key players: Daquan “Wal-Mart” Martin, WR/S; Victor Ripley, OL/DL, Sr.; DreQuan Hoskey, CB/KR, Sr.; Kelvin Otay, QB, Sr.; Carrington Clark, RB; Sala Fox, DE/FB; Timone Brown, ATH/S; Blaze Torrance, CB/KR, Jr.

Key losses: Omar White, DT/OL; DeQuan Parrish, RB; Chris Harrison, LB

Fast fact: The Warriors haven’t had a winning record since going 6-4 in 2005.

Big game: At Deep Run, 9/18, 7 p.m. Second game of the season could let us know how Warriors will fare.

Outlook: How quickly can Henrico get its offense on track will determine if they can shake up the Capital District.

Hanover FB Preview, 8/21/09

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@sbgnet.com
(804) 240-2191

Kenny Fryman, Josh Wells, Steven Fogleman, Kartlon Davis and many other program-building players are gone from Hanover.

So the Hawks may fly low in 2009, right?

Cue Lee Corso. Not so fast, my friend.

Hanover returns eight starters each on the offensive and defensive side of the ball from the Central Region, Division 5 finalist.

“We lost a lot of good guys,” Just said. “We’re returning a lot of good guys as well.”

The skill positions are loaded. Backs Chris Lee and Deane Cheatham and receivers Danny Trsic and Jeremy Yorke were keys offensively.

Defensively, promising sophomore CB Xavier Crocker, safety Patrick Roche and linebackers Marzae Brooks and Ohio commit Blake Jones are back.

The front lines have gotten varsity uniforms dirty, including DLs Aaron Phillips and Matt Pocta, OLs Kyle Williams and Alex Brown.

“We’re real excited about what we have there,” Just said.

A significant key to the season may be who replaces Wells at quarterback.

Three guys have a shot at the spot, junior lefty Trey Faison, who provides a quickness dimension, junior Jeff Zona and freshman Sam Rogers is turning heads.

Whoever takes the spot won’t have to do it alone with so many experienced and productive players returning.

“We have a lot of speed and strength,” Lee said. “Everybody needs to be prepared for us.”

ALL ABOUT HANOVER

Key players: Blake Jones, LB, Sr.; Patrick Roche, S, Sr.; Danny Trsic, WR, Sr.; Chris Lee, RB, Sr.; Deane Cheatham, RB, Jr.; Xavier Crocker, CB/WR, So.

Key losses: Kenny Fryman, LB (Hampden-Sydney); Josh Wells, QB (JMU, TE); Steven Fogleman, FS (H-SC); Kartlon Davis, TE (H-SC)

Top newcomers: Kenny Morris (Lee-Davis transfer); Sam Rogers, Fr., QB

Big game: vs. Patrick Henry, Sept. 11, 7 p.m. The Patriots and Hawks are developing a pretty good rivalry. A win here will set the tone.

Outlook: The Hawks are a Division 5 contender without a doubt.

Breaking news, 8/20/09: Connerley ECU bound

Nice guys finish last?

Well, Will Connerley is a nice guy who just signed a baseball scholarship with East Carolina University, far from a last resort for the Lee-Davis super student-athlete.

Connerley, who carries a 4.0 GPA while playing football in the fall and baseball during the spring, has been interested in the Pirates since he entered high school.

“It’s always been one of my favorite schools,” Connerley said. “I’ve always liked it. I’ve been going to camp there for three or four years.”

And if you play catcher well at ECU, the spot Connerley will take his powerful bat and arm, you usually get a shot at the big leagues.

Take Jake Smith, who won the coveted Johnny Bench Award in 2006 in honor of the best catcher in the collegiate ranks before being selected by the Oakland A’s.

That’s far from Connerley’s mind at this point, but a nice feather to keep in his new purple cap.

“I think it is an honor to be following those guys up,” Connerley said.

J. Marshall FB Preview, 8/20/09

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@sbgnet.com
(804)
240-2191

Mired in a box of below .500 tickets, John Marshall and coach
Marvin Bridges picked out an above .500
stamp in 2007, a 6-4 season.

Led by players like Hampton’s Darius Jackson and Jalal Gee, and several other college players in
2007, Bridges’ 2009 team may be on par with the 2007 team.

Athletes
abound everywhere, led by one of the Central Region’s most versatile performers,
Josiah Shelton.

Shelton, a
transfer from Midlothian, can play quarterback, running back, wide receiver,
linebacker, cornerback and safety. Opponents may not be able to find
him.

Shoot, Bridges and his staff might even have a difficult
time.

The offensive line should have a great time as the experienced unit
looks to give time to talented weapons.

Ramone Bragg (6-3, 250) and Mike Hudson (6-5, 270) pace the unit from their
tackle spots, while Brandon Brooks (6-1,
250) and Dajuan White (6-2, 260) play
guard sandwiching center Josh
McClure
.

“That’s my foundation right there,” said Bridges, who is
itching for more program-building wins over established schools like Mills
Godwin and Hermitage after JM took down Patrick Henry last season. “I feel like
that’s a very important part. I think they are on par with the 2007 team, a
little bit more disciplined.

“If they stay focused, we’ll be in
games.”

Bridges also hopes his defense can keep him in games while the
offense gets going behind sophomore signal caller Malcolm Ball.

Shelton’s versatility will
be key, along with safeties C.J. Shelton
and Lesuane Vaughan, linebacker Tavaris Thompson and promising DE Davon Lampkins.

This athletic group
promises to not be shy and fly around the ball, hopefully spurring the Justices
past the 3-7 mark in 2008.

“We’re looking real good right now,” Josiah
Shelton said. “Only thing we have to do now is wait until we suit up and see
what everybody’s talking about.”

ALL ABOUT JOHN
MARSHALL

Key players:
Josiah Shelton, ATH, Sr.; Malcolm Bell, QB, Soph.; Akeem Brown, WR, Sr.
(“I expect big things,” Bridges said.); C.J. Shelton, SS, Sr.; Lesuane Vaughan,
FS, Sr.; Jamar Tunstall, CB/WR/KR, Sr.; Frank Bullock, RB/LB, Sr.; Josh Wallace,
RB, Sr.; Tavaris Thompson, LB/RB; Tyrell Smith, CB/WR/RB; Offensive line

Key losses: Randall Braxton,
LB/TE; Maurice Johnson, WR/DE; Quantae Cooley, WR/CB (St. Paul’s); Ernest Brown,
DE;

Fast fact: Since 1997, JM has
only one winning season, 2007, that’s one in 12 seasons. Can the Justices make
it two in 13?

Big game: At Mills
Godwin, Oct. 2, 7 p.m. Godwin nipped JM 8-7 in 2008 and is a school that Jayem
has not fared well against in the recent past.

Outlook: This is Bridges’ fifth year and he has
helped pull Jayem out of the doldrums of no-win and one-win seasons. This is the
time he hopes they take a giant step forward.

Breaking news, 8/19/09: Hanover’s Jones goes D-I

Hanover’s Blake Jones has made history.

The linebacker recently committed to Ohio University to become the first Hanover football player in school history to receive a Division I scholarship.

“It’s our first Division I commit ever,” Hanover coach Josh Just said. “We are very proud of Blake.”

The Hawks seemed to have a few sure-fire D-I prospects last season.

But all-state LB Kenny Fryman and safety Steven Fogleman ended up at Hampden-Sydney, and QB Josh Wells walked on at James Madison as a tight end.

Just believes Wells will eventually earn a scholarship there.

Jones, a four-year starter, moves to linebacker this season after playing on the defensive line for three standout seasons, earning all-district and region honors for the Hawks.

He should feel comfortable in a Bobcat uniform.

Ohio wears green and white like Jones’ Hawks.
