Boys volleyball, 11/18/09: Cosby 3, Great Bridge 2

Cosby’s headed to the state Group AAA boys volleyball final – but the Titans had to hold their breath for a while.

Cosby went ahead two games before holding off Eastern Region champion Great Bridge in a five-game dogfight, 16-14 in the final set.

The Titans wrecked Great Bridge in the first two games, 17 and 20 as Ben Morrison (16 kills, four digs) got off to a hot start, but got too relaxed before game three.

It coincided with the Wildcats of Chesapeake having some success in the middle of the net with 6-8 middle Shane Popelka.

It seemed like GB realized it was the undefeated team that had lost five sets the entire season before the state tournament.

“Their big kid in the middle, we couldn’t stop him when they got the ball,” Cosby coach Frank Jenkins said of Popelka. “But we kept finding ways to get back into the rally or back in the game. We had to fight as hard as we’ve ever fought this entire year.”

Stephen Cunningham threw in 27 kills to lead Cosby, including one that put the Titans ahead 12-9 in the fifth.

Undaunted, Great Bridge pulled to a tie with two straight scores from senior middle Danny Childs, and took a 14-13 lead before Jenkins called timeout.

“Can we have the first and second set over again,” Great Bridge coach Dave Albaugh quipped to start the press conference. “I think Cosby being so good all around it took a little bit more time for us to pinpoint some things that they were weak on.”

Titans setter Brent Zackon came up with a huge **** after a long rally to knot things at 14.

Then GB had an untimely error, and Zackon finished the match off with one of his six kills.

He also added 16 assists and two blocks, while fellow setter Daniel Helderman had 17 assists.

“I’m not going to lie, I was nervous,” said Cunningham, who added it
was the best individual performance of his career. “We were able to
knock off three straight, and then … “

… He exhaled.

Boys volleyball, 11/18: C. Hill 3, F. Colonial 1

by Stephen M. Lewis

Clover Hill has one underclassman … on its entire roster.

First Colonial starts three sophomores and a freshman.

The volleyball maturity difference propelled Clover Hill to the state Group AAA final, topping First Colonial 3-1 Wednesday night at VCU’s Siegel Center.

The Cavs have a seventh date with Cosby in the state final, their Dominion District rival who stopped unbeaten Great Bridge in five games, Friday at 8 p.m. back at the Siegel.

Clover Hill’s semifinal was similar to Cosby’s, as the Cavaliers ran out to a two-game lead winning two tight contests.

“They had an experience factor on us. You could see that early, especially in the first two games,” Patriots coach Gary Hodges said. ” We let them go on runs of five points.”

But the Patriots of Virginia Beach responded, led by senior outside hitters Sammy Brennan and Chase Holderby, to strike 25-22 in the third set as the error bug bit the Cavaliers.

Tony Song (10 kills, eight digs) and his powerful, unrelenting jump serve pushed Clover Hill out to a 16-10 lead in the fourth game.

The Cavs squandered the advantage, however, as the Patriots ran off seven straight points as they tried to force a fifth game.

But Matt White (10 kills, seven digs), Josh Keeder (seven kills, three blocks), Alden Negaard and Mark Smith (eight kills, four blocks), all had clutch plays down the stretch to move one step closer to matching a Central Region title to a state one.

“We knew all of the beach teams were going to be scrappy,” Smith said. “We saw Cosby get taken two a fifth game, so we wanted to finish it in four.”

Girls volleyball, 11/17/09: Mills Godwin 3, Princess Anne 2

by Stephen M. Lewis

There’s something about a senior.

They’re hungry, tested and frankly, rather have their opponent’s season end.

That sums up Mills Godwin’s gutsy 3-2 comeback victory over Princess Anne in the state Group AAA quarterfinals Tuesday, with a little help from a freshman sprinkled in.

The Eagles trailed 2-1 after a dominate 25-17 game three win from the Eastern Region runner-up Cavaliers. Gabby Smith (18 kills) and Holly Browning (10 kills) were on their way to great performances.

But they are both sophomores, as PA relies heavily on talented, but youthful players.

Godwin’s senior-laden roster stepped forward for a spirited 25-18 fourth-game win.

Maggie Murphy (32 kills, 21 digs) and Jill Sedlar (14 kills), both seniors, lifted the Eagles to a 16-6 and 22-11 lead en route to forcing game five.

The momentum was all Godwin’s as Murphy came out smoking, along with Sedlar, as they both had two kills apiece from senior setter Meghan Meleski (52 assists, four blocks).

Godwin’s defense was remarkable in the game, as freshman Emily Rebuck had switched her jersey for a red libero one in the fourth game.

Maddie Wood, an all-region libero, was having a tough night.

“You can’t ask for anything more out of a freshman,” Godwin coach Jason Garrett said. “Maddie calmed down, relaxed and played some great volleyball at the end.”

PA coach Craig Dooren called timeout to stop the bleeding and gather his troops.

It worked.

The Cavs ran off three straight points before another of Godwin seniors, Katherine Atkinson, provided a block for 10-6.

Sedlar scored for an 11-8 lead before Princess Anne battled back to 11-10, but Murphy put in two kills late as the Central Region champion advanced 15-12.

“All 5-6 of her. I don’t know how she does it,” Garrett said of Murphy, who has routinely put up 20-20 games since the playoffs have begun. “She really figures out a way to score a point whenever we need one from her. Tipping, rolling, hitting, throwing the block, whatever we need her to do, she goes out there and gets a point.”

That’s just like a senior.

Top 5 football, 11/14/09: H. Springs 17, Varina 16

Special teams weren’t so special at Highland Springs last season or earlier in 2009.

But it’s the reason the Springers defeated rival Varina 17-16 Saturday afternoon to win the Capital District championship and earn a Central Region, Division 6 playoff berth.

Varina lined up for a 34-yard field goal to end the first half, but Cody McDaniel‘s attempt ricocheted off a helmet and bolted high in the air.

Highland Springs’ Wyatt Johnson caught the pigskin and took it back 55 yards as the Springers led 10-6 at halftime.

Sophomore Oscar Portillo knocked in a 23-yard field goal in the first quarter and made two extra points, including the game-winner with 1:24 left in the contest for the Springers.

Thomas Moore did a nice job with diagonal kickoffs, and punter Lemanuel Kid was sure-handed and footed.

It may read like simple work, but Highland Springs lost to Meadowbrook in part because of special teams in the season opener. Now it helped earn a championship.

“Special teams was key,” Highland Springs second-year coach Loren
Johnson
said. “We rep it all the time. [My coaching staff] did a good
job of finding kids in the school that can kick. We beat the hallways.”

No scoring occurred in the third period, but Varina struck early in the fourth when the shotgun snap shot through JaQuan Burchette‘s hands. He kicked it out of the end zone as Varina climbed within two points, 10-8.

Two drives later, Trey Johnson (22 carries, 91 yards) earned a tough 5-yard TD run. Hermon Norrell hit Dondrey Pegeas on a slant pattern for the two-point conversion, and Varina took the lead 16-10 with 5:44 remaining.

The Springers responded with one of the most patient drives you’ll ever see, traveling 68 yards in 11 plays, nine of them run plays.

J.J. Saunders wasn’t getting much room against the Blue Devil defense all game, but broke off a 16-yarder and a 15-yard TD, his only runs of 10 yards or more in the entire game.

“It was all about being patient and waiting for my hole to open up,” said Saunders, who ran 22 times for 80 yards. “I just hit it. Hit it hard and low.”

The Blue Devils didn’t fold, going 55 yards to the Springers’ 8-yard line. Out of timeouts, Varina coach Stu Brown trotted out McDaniel to win the game.

He missed badly left, but Springers’ coach Johnson called timeout before the snap. McDaniel got another shot, and missed left again.

“It’s [13] seconds left and you’re on your 8-yard line. If you don’t go to the end zone the clock’s going to run out,” Brown said. “You ain’t going to have time to get your extra-point team on and kick a field goal.

“On third down the only play you have is a fade or a jump ball to the end zone. They’re in a cover four look right there. We gave ourselves a chance to win the ballgame and that’s what I looked at.”

Now Highland Springs looks toward the playoffs as seeding should become clear after Monday’s results.

“We have a lot of work to do,” Burchette said. “We’re just trying to reach that state championship goal.”

Varina       0 6 0 10 – 16

Girls volleyball, 11/13: Godwin 3, Deep Run 1

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com
(804) 240-2191

When you don’t let volleyballs hit the gym floor, a win is inevitable.

Mills Godwin displayed extraordinary defense en route to a dominant 3-0 win over Deep Run in the Central Region girls volleyball championship at Cosby High School Friday night.

Scoring is important, but let’s talk about digs.

Godwin’s leaders: Maggie Murphy (20 digs), Maddie Wood (13) and Meghan Meleski (11).

It is no coincidence that after claiming the championship hardware they were each selected as first-team all-region picks.

“That’s our main goal,” Meleski said of the defense. “We know we are lacking in height in the front row. We know our strong suit is serve-receive and defense. We work really hard to make sure we are as scrappy as we possibly can be, so it kind of frustrates the other team that they can’t get a ball down.”

Deep Run put balls down early, taking a first game lead.

But it was short lived as freshman Emily Rebuck led an eight-point run. Rebuck was the catalyst in Godwin’s two 25-13 wins in the Colonial District title game win over Deep Run a week ago.

The Eagles took the first game 25-21, and the second 25-17 after leading 19-9.

“I think Godwin does a great job of taking us out of our rhythm,” Deep Run coach Terra Balla said. “We get out of our comfort zone and then we fall apart.”

Chaney LaReau (14 kills, 12 digs) put in a **** for Deep Run as the third game was tied at three early. Deep Run and Mallory Woolridge (10 kills) would not sniff the lead anymore as the Eagles won 25-16.

Murphy (13 kills), Meleski (23 assists) and Jill Sedlar (11 kills) provided the offensive pop as the Eagles continue to roll.

“We’re getting there, we’re getting there. We can do a lot better,” Godwin coach Jason Garrett said. “That’s amazing to say. We made some errors tonight, but we played some very good volleyball.

“What I keep telling the kids is, great job, let’s do better.”

Better is a state title, which both teams will be seeking beginning Tuesday in the Group AAA quarterfinals. Godwin will host the Eastern Region champion, while Deep Run will hit the road to the Tidewater-area’s best.

“We look at our history as a program,” Balla said. “This is our fourth time going on to the state tournament. We’ve won one region crown [in four tries] and we’ve won two state titles [in three tries].

“Hopefully, this team will regroup like some of the others did.”
