Stephen Lewis, back with you once again, third game, one more to go.

It’s the bottom bracket, Douglas Freeman and Lee-Davis are set to tangle.

Stay here to know the deal here at Henrico High School.

Douglas Freeman is off to a hot start, leading 14-2 and on a 14-0 run. Chris Cook scored the first two for L-D, but it’s been all Freeman since.

Philip Rohrer has 12 of the 17 points for Freeman. He just scored on a nice fastbreak. Freeman ahead 17-8.

Full-court pressure is ******* Lee-Davis. Freeman’s scored three straight buckets on four straight turnovers for L-D.

25-10 Freeman, running away with it. Wow, impossible shot scored by Markese Watkins. His shoulders weren’t close to being square and he hits it near the buzzer.

SECOND QUARTER

Lee-Davis climbing back, down nine. Cook glides in for another two-pointer. DF up 25-18.

Just that quick, Semir Sucic puts it back to 10 on a 3-pointer.

Sucic stroked another trey, immediately off the pine Sam Hoskins scores, them Najm Turner finishes on the break. Freeman back up by 15, 37-22.

Brandon Young makes a nice move for Lee-Davis, scoring in the paint. 37-25 Freeman. Wow another, L-D only down nine points after Freeman’s defense has picked them apart.

It’ll go to the break 39-28 in favor of Freeman. Back in a moment.

THIRD QUARTER

Freeman up 12 points now, 53-41. Mac Hudgins with a slice of the lane and finish. 55-41 Freeman.

Jordan Boze, who is also a baseball star as is Hudgins, knocks in a two. 55-43, L-D down 12.

Rohrer leads the Rebels with 18 points, Cook has 13 so far.

35.6 to go in the period.

It’s 56-43 now on a Justin Mann FT. Now Mac back at the line, his first is off.

Second no good as well. L-D can cut it to 11, possibly 10. Ohhhh, Young’s shot toilet bowls out.

Mann dribbles up, hounded by Young, gets by and Patrick O’Connor nails the 3-pointer, his third of the period.

He has 14 points through three as that was a backbreaking sequence for L-D, now down 59-43.

FOURTH QUARTER

Lee-Davis back within 11 after a bucket by Cook and another by Justin Naumann. They’re a scrappy bunch.

Rohrer puts in two straight buckets. He has 26 points.

DF up 69-50 now as the final score seems inevitable with a 69-50 lead with 2:58 to go.

This game is dragging out with fouls and stoppages, but Freeman has it in hand, 82-63 with 18 seconds to go.

It’s final, 82-63 Freeman. The Rebels move on to the semifinals to face the Hermitage-Meadowbrook winner. That game is coming up in minutes.

My fabulous intern, Brittney Grove will be giving her thoughts on that one. Come back and check it out!

Wrestling Blog, 12/23/09

This past weekend up in Delaware, one of the most prestigious tournaments in all of the land took place … THE BEAST OF THE EAST!!!

As a region/area we were able to place six of our local kids in the top eight of this highly-regarded tournament.

This is a tournament not just any wrestler can perform in, but mostly wrestlers who have been wrestling for years or over a long period of time.

St. Christoper’s elite freshman Brandon Jeske was one of the big talks of the tourney.

The young man wrestling in his first year of Varsity placed second losing 2-1 to Mark Grey of Blair Academy in the 119 pound final. Grey is currently ranked in the top part of the national rankings.

Matoaca had two place winners both of them who are juniors in Josh Clark at 140 pounds placing third and Blake Roulo at 145 lbs placing fourth.

Finally, three others placed eighth: junior Gabe LaVey (Hanover 135), senior Patrick Foxworth (Hanover 140) and senior Ryan Powis (James River 285).

Congratulations to all of these young men who placed and to all the others who didn’t place but participated in this awesome tournament. I expect to see the underclassmen do extremely well again next year.

Notes: The Richmond Invitational has been rescheduled for the week after Christmas. The tournament is still at Hermitage High School on December 29th. Last I heard this is now a one-day tourney. If this information is not true then the tourney will be the 29th and 30th. Check newspaper and online for details.

Everyone have a safe and happy holidays. God Bless everyone and their families. Be safe over the holiday break. Wrestlers you especially…NO ACCIDENTS OF ANY SUCH!!

Girls basketball, 12/21: Dale 67, H. Springs 58

Thomas Dale and coach Kevin Coffey only played six players.

But that sixth one came up big as the Knights dispatched of Highland Springs 67-58 in the first round of the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament Monday morning at VCU’s Siegel Center.

The reserve is Shawnee Sweeney, a junior who completed three nifty passes from Duke-bound Ka’lia Johnson to help halt Highland Springs.

The first was in an 8-0 third-quarter run by the Knights, ranked second in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, to take an eight-point lead into the fourth period.

Johnson, who poured in a game-high 26 points, scored two field goals before finding Sweeney underneath for two.

Then with the game on the line and the No. 8 Springers charging, Johnson threw two beautiful bullet passes to Sweeney underneath for wide-open layups that extended Dale’s lead from three to five points.

“As a point guard my head has to be up,” Johnson said. “That’s how you get those open layups. As long as they keep making them, they’ll keep getting the ball.”

After Kyra Coleman scored eight points in the first 10 minutes of the game, Dale’s diamond-and-one on the Springers star, paced by Alyssa Frye, took Highland Springs’ offense out of gear.

But Coleman started to find room with strong, quick drives to the basket as the Springers closed within two points early in the third period, and the aforementioned three-point deficits late.

Coleman finished with 19 points, a team high. Linisha Tinsley threw in 13 for the Springers.

For Dale, Frye, Sweeney and Andrea Hobbs each had 10 points to help Johnson’s effort. Taylor Bradley had nine.

“We weren’t getting the calls that we wanted to,” Hobbs said. “So it shows a lot about our team to keep playing against adversity. It shows a lot of heart and how far we can go this season.”

Thomas Dale 13 13 20 21 – 67
H. Springs     14 10 14 20 – 58
Thomas Dale (4-0):
Frye 10, Sweeney 10, Johnson 26, Williams 2, Hobbs 10, Bradley 9. Totals: 23 19-26 67. 3-point goals: Hobbs 2.
Highland Springs (4-3): Jones 6, Jeffries 7, Dabney 9, Jenkins 0, Coleman 19, Cannon 4, Tinsley 13. Totals: 21 11-19 58. 3-point goals: Jones 2, Jeffries, Coleman, Dabney.

Boys basketball, 12/17/09: Armstrong 46, L-D 40

A battle of wits headlined Armstrong’s 46-40 victory over Lee-Davis Thursday afternoon.

The more athletic Wildcats held a 6- or 8-point margin early as the slower Confederates were content to stay back in their 2-3 zone and make Armstrong shoot from 19 feet or more.

So Armstrong and coach Darryl Watts held the ball. And held the ball. And oh yeah, they held the ball.

With the score at 23-16, the Wildcats sat on the leather for six minutes as Lee-Davis took the third period 2-1, but trailed 23-16 going into the fourth period.

“Our greatest asset is our speed and athleticism,” Watts said. “We wanted to play to our strengths. We tried to pull them out of the zone. They chose to stay back until the fourth quarter. It was a little bit of a chess match.”

Lee-Davis coach Tripp Metzger let his guys come out and guard the Wildcats to start the fourth period, and play sped up for a moment as Armstrong took a 34-22 lead on Xavier Gary‘s fastbreak finish with about three minutes to go.

From there, Lee-Davis would put everybody but Armstrong’s coaching staff on the free-throw line trying to catch up.

“He held it out early and we were going to sit there,” Metzger said. “We were going to wait until the fourth quarter and we’ll play a game one quarter.”

It almost worked as the Wildcats shot themselves in the foot with poor free-throw shooting. L-D got it to six with 34 seconds to go but would get no closer.

Lee-Davis dropped to 3-3, 1-1 in the Capital District and was led by Justin Naumann‘s 10 points, all in the fourth period. Chris Cook, playing on a tender ankle, had nine.

A young Armstrong team moved to 5-0, 2-0 in the Capital. Carlos Nickens and Xavier Gary had 12 apiece.

“It’s good for a good group. It’s a confidence builder,” Watts said of the quick start. “However, we still have a lot of work to do.”

Lee-Davis     9   5 2 24 – 40
Armstrong 12 10 1 23 – 46
Lee-Davis (1-1 Capital, 3-3):
Cook 9, King 0, Powell 0, Watkins 0, Frame 6, Spengler 0, Labons 0, Abele 6, Naumann 10, Boze 9. Totals: 14 8-12 40. 3-point goals: Abele 2, Cook, Boze.
Armstrong (2-0, 5-0): Gary 12, Cook 3, Wilson 0, Shands 1, Gordon 6, McClain 4, Herring 8, Nickens 12. Totals: 15 15-31 46. 3-point goal: Gordon.

Breaking news, 12/17/09: Wildcats coach moving on

Deep Run football coach Greg Kendall has stepped down.

After three successful seasons, Kendall will move to Ohio with his wife, who received a promotion on her job that they couldn’t turn down and had to relocate to accept.

The couple is looking to be in Cincinnati by the end of January.

“I’m sorry to be leaving Deep Run, it has been a good experience,” Kendall said. “But I’m very excited about the prospects of starting in a new place and supporting my wife as she has been there for me the last three years.”

Kendall took over in 2007 and helped the Wildcats post a 20-10 record in three seasons, highlighted by a 9-1 2008 year that left Deep Run just out of the Central Region, Division 6 playoffs.

Kendall won’t be found on Richmond’s sidelines in 2010, but Cincinnati’s better look out.

“I’m going to take the first several months to look around for the right program and see what develops,” Kendall said. “I think that more than likely I’ll be on a sideline somewhere next fall. It’s a hard habit to break.”
