Kevin Judon is an ideal George Lancaster player.

When it comes to shooting, Judon’s not shy, never lacking confidence and has a broken safety on the trigger.

The junior struggled to find the mark out of the gate for Highland Springs, but recovered to nail six 3-pointers leading the Springers over nemesis Henrico 72-48 Friday night.

“I just kept shooting,” Judon said. “When I got to the bench my coach told me to keep going. I was looking for my teammates, but I just took what they gave me, which was wide-open shots.”

Judon finished with 24 points as all of his 3-point bombs seem to put final letters on Henrico’s tombstone.

His 3-pointer helped Highland Springs, ranked second in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, to an 8-0 bolt to end the first half for a 36-19 lead.

The Warriors climbed back to 38-27 looking to take momentum early in the third period. Judon stroked a 3-pointer.

Two free throws by Henrico’s Jestin Lewis (nine points) had Henrico down 13 looking to close the quarter strong. Judon hit another bonus shot.

The Springers also put Jarvis Threatt in double figures with 15 points, none in the fourth quarter as he was hit with his fourth foul.

Darryl Lewis replaced him for his first action on the game, and responded with nine points in the final frame.

Henrico got 14 points for Evan Thorpe, 10 from Michael Johnson, and played without freshman starting point guard Tim Jones, who injured a groin in warm-ups.

“I was pleased in the fact that even though we didn’t play well we had an opportunity to sub,” Lancaster said. “A lot of kids who don’t normally play stepped up and really played very well.

“Typically this time of year you do a lot of scouting, and we match up with certain people. We see who’s behind us and who’s in front of us. Hopefully we won’t lose ground.”

H. Springs 14 22 18 18 – 72

Wrestling Blog, 1/21/10

Two more weeks until Postseason action!!!

As we enter the middle of January this is the time of year where our area wrestlers better start thinking about February and all the postseason tournaments that lie ahead. These tourneys are districts, regionals and states.

Districts, which begin in two weeks, take place February 6th at their respective locations. By this time all wrestlers from the Central, Dominion, Capital and Colonial Districts better start getting a grip on things. This includes weight, stamina, nutrition and preparation.

The time to start peaking is here soon because you want to be on the top of your “A” in February.

Wrestlers make sure you’re ready for all this because from here on out it’s GO TIME!!

As of some recent results this past weekend (Jan 15-16) Riverbend High School in Fredericksburg held its annual tournament, “The Free Lance Star Super 32.” A few teams from our area went to this tournament and came home with some great results. I won’t list everyone who placed but here are the champions.

112: Shaun Crawley (Varina)
135: Gabe LaVey (Hanover)
140: Blake Roulo (Matoaca)
145: Josh Clark (Matoaca)
152: Ben Wilson (Hanover)
215: Calvin Davis (Lee-Davis)

Teams that finished in top 10 were Hanover (second) and Matoaca (sixth). Hanover’s 157 points was 3 shy of the champion Sherando who scored 160 points.

Cosby High School went 5-0 as a dual team at Chantilly High School over this past weekend. Cosby has a very solid lineup this year for a team who has dealt with some injuries and has new, young, inexperienced wrestlers.

“Big W” of the week: I have to give this award to Deep Run’s 103-pound junior Kasey Early. Early, who is currently ranked fifth in the state Group AAA, pinned Bobby Gray of Kempsville, ranked 3rd in AAA. Big win Kasey!

BIG D’s Top Man Rankings:
103:
Kasey Early (Deep Run)
112: Charlie Lipford (Henrico)
119: Brayden Manchester (James River)
125: Jordan O’Donnell (James River) or Dillon Knight (Atlee)…..pick ’em
130: James White (Thomas Dale) or Ryan Sams (Clover Hill)…..pick ’em
135: Peyton Walsh (Deep Run) or Gabe LaVey (Hanover)…..pick ’em
140: Patrick Foxworth (Hanover)
145: Josh Clark (Matoaca)
152: Cody Allala (Hopewell)
160: Andy Svanda (James River)
171: Clint Allala (Hopewell) or Austin Cobourn (Cosby)…..pick ’em
189: Kyle Locke (Hanover)
215: Mark Howard (Midlothian) this is actually a deep weight class which features Calvin Davis (Lee-Davis), Keith Winfield (Hopewell) and Denny Vaughan (Dinwiddie)
285: Ryan Powis (James River)

Wrestler of the Week: Ben Wilson of Hanover. The senior 152 not only won The Free Lance Star Super 32 but in doing so he beat Brandon Diamond of Thomas Dale in the semis 7-3, who he had lost to 6-5 the week before at the James River Duals. In the finals he beat Hampton’s Tony Leonardi, currently ranked seventh in AAA. Wilson is ranked 6th!

What a difference a player can make.

Saddle with three fouls in the first half, Highland Springs’ Kyra Coleman returned to lead the Springers to a 60-51 victory over Meadowbrook Wednesday night in a nondistrict bout.

The sensational senior got off to a hot start, scoring nine points in a 24-11 first quarter in favor of Highland Springs. But with 5:13 left in the second period, Coleman picked up her third foul as Highland Springs led 27-16.

Meadowbrook, ranked sixth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, would go on a 13-0 run as all Coleman could do was sit and watch.

That was until the third quarter, where she ripped off seven points in a 9-2 run No. 5 Highland Springs had to start the second half.

Coleman would finish with a game-high 20 points, Marquia Jones 12 and Qunisha Cannon 10 as the Springers would lead by two possessions or more the rest of the way.

“She’s the catalyst for the team,” Highland Springs coach Franklin Harris said of Coleman. “When you take a [Division I] prospect out and you really don’t have anybody at that moment that is really ready to step back up and play …

“She comes in in the third, it’s different. You’ve got all your firepower. You’ve got your stud out there. It’s more mental. We’re back, she’s back on the floor, let’s go play.”

It’s more physical for the Monarchs.

Coach Mike Knight has been pleading for more strong play from his Monarchs the entire season, especially in the paint. But Highland Springs was the aggressor, making almost three times as many free throws (18) as Meadowbrook took (7).

Torie Cunningham had 12 points on her terrific speed and knifes to the basket, and Ashley Pegram threw in 11 for Knight.

“We’ve got to show a little more toughness,” Knight said. “Whenever things start going bad for us we’ve got to start being more tough. The game was won on rebounds and free throws. All of the 50-50 balls they got, we didn’t get any hustle points.”

Meadowbrook 11 20  5 15 – 51
H. Springs       24  7 14 15 – 60
Meadowbrook (9-5):
Howard 0, Pegram 11, Cunningham 12, Stone 0, Kiara Marks 8, Katrina Marks 6, Coleman 8, Arrington 6. Totals: 22 3-7 51. 3-point goals: Pegram 2, Coleman 2.
Highland Springs (12-3): Jones 12, Jeffries 5, Dabney 4, Dickerson 0, Jenkins 0, Coleman 20, Cannon 10, Tinsley 9. Totals: 19 18-25 3-point goals: Tinsley 2, Jones, Jeffries.

Boys basketball, 1/19/10: #1 P’Burg 70, #3 Dale 66

No one said every game would be easy.

Petersburg, paced by 46 points from its frontcourt duo, nipped Thomas Dale 70-66 Tuesday night in a Central District battle of DigitalSports Top 5 teams.

The Crimson Wave, No. 1 in the DS Poll and state, moved to 8-0 in the toughest district in the Central Region, 14-0 overall.

How did No. 3 Dale lose to Petersburg for the seventh straight time?

Perhaps an early 13-2 to lead to start the contest could be the culprit.

Maybe the aforementioned paint tandem of Quinton Spain and Du’Vaughn Maxwell. Spain delivered a career-high for the second straight night, this time a 30-point effort to destroy his 22-point mark against Benedictine this past Saturday. Maxwell threw in 16 points with oodles of defensive effort before fouling out late.

Or could the loss be on the Knights? Coach Eddie Goss‘ squad battled back numerous times in the fourth period on terrific defense and inside scoring, including a personal 9-0 run from Malcolm King to slice Petersburg’s lead to one point.

King bested his career-high mark of 30 points set earlier this season, with a 31-point burst, all after the first period, 20 in the fourth period.

After two free throws were calmly sunk by Frank Mason to put the lead to three for Petersburg, 66-63, Goss called timeout with 1:01 left.

He had a play set up for King or Andrew White (16 points) to isolate, but ball pressure from Petersburg football standout Kevin Green took things out of whack.

“Kevin Green, he does a good job defensing the ball, especially right there at the point,” Wave coach Bill Lawson III said. “He puts so much pressure on the ball it’s hard for them to get in their offense.”

Chalk it up as another opportunity lost for Dale, who now drops to 7-2 in the Central, both losses coming to the Wave.

“Every time we needed a big play we either gave up an easy basket or gave up a rebound,” Goss said. “We just made mistakes that beat us. We played hard. We could have quit at halftime. We came back and played our butts off.”

Petersburg 19 16 14 21 – 70
Thomas Dale 9 14 19 24 – 66
Petersburg (8-0 Central, 14-0): Green 9, Desmore 7, Mason 6, E. Maxwell 2, D. Maxwell 16, Patterson 0, Spain 30. Totals: 28 12-20 70. 3-point goals: Desmore 2.
Thomas Dale (7-2, 12-3): Jordan 0, White 16, Hevener 0, Eaaton 0, Turner 8, King 31, Williams 6, Green 4. Totals: 25 16-25 66.

Boys basketball, 1/15/10: #8 Godwin 56, Freeman 52

by Brittney Grove
DigitalSports Intern
Deep Run Class of 2007 tri-athlete
University of Maryland volleyball captain

When crosstown rivals Mills Godwin and Douglas Freeman meet up in boys basketball, you can expect a show.

Friday night’s match up between the schools didn’t disappoint, as Godwin, ranked eighth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, beat Freeman 56-52.

It proved to be a game that featured no lead changes and 25 of Freeman’s 52 points being scored in the fourth quarter.

Not to mention the atmosphere, characterized by a packed Godwin gym filled with students dressed up in various Halloween costumes.

Godwin wasted no time as Freeman played without key junior, Patrick O’Connor, due to injury. The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 run as it took Freeman nearly half the quarter to get on the board.

The game featured stiff defense by both teams.

The Eagles’ patience on offense and ability to work the ball around to get a clean shot gave them the edge throughout the contest.

Godwin ran down the last 1:20 of the first half as Connor McColley (nine points) capped it off with a turnaround 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Eagles a led 23-15 at the break.

Both teams continued to scrap for points in the second half and Godwin built its lead to double digits. The intensity never faulted.

At the 3:20 mark in the third quarter McColley dove out of bounds at full speed to save a Godwin possession. McColley not only received the Godwin possession but also a bloody face.

After a five-minute delay, McColley walked off the court, but did not return to the game.

Just when it looked as if Godwin would be able to cruise to a win, a layup by Freeman’s Justin Mann (led all scorers with 22) put the Rebels within nine with 3:08 remaining in the game.

The Rebels’ Chris Pace dropped in a three at the 1:33 mark to make it a two-possession game, 51-45.

The Eagles’ Garrett Harvey came up big hitting all four of his free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the game for Godwin. Harvey led Godwin finishing with 15 points.
